Freedom Within Equals Freedom Without

| Sometimes I start my yoga classes for kids in juvenile detention by telling them that the purpose of yoga is "moksha," meaning freedom or liberation. It gets their attention, that's for sure! I explain how yoga is the union of body, mind and spirit, how all three are connected. To truly be free, you have to have freedom in all three areas.
These kids in jail are yearning for their freedom, and spend time imagining what it will be like once they're on the "outs" (outside) again. The rest of us are already on the "outs," yet it often feels like we're locked up because we aren't experiencing that freedom of which yoga speaks.
This weekend's Fourth of July festivities here in the States revolve around our freedom, our liberation from tyranny. But are we really free, body, mind and spirit?
With so many losing their homes, their jobs, their way of life, is that freedom? Those with health challenges, whose numbers are increasing daily, are they free? What about those that suffer mental anguish due to high stress and anxiety levels, are they liberated?
When we are balanced in body, in mind, and in spirit simultaneously, that's when we'll be free. There's only one way to get there, and that's to go within. We find freedom by learning to be with ourselves, love ourselves, and treat ourselves with respect. When we take charge of our own health through a responsible diet and exercise program, our health will be liberated. When society supports a lifestyle of mental well-being vs. an achievement-oriented, stress-inducing go-go-go mentality, then we'll experience mental moksha.
Just because you're able to freely move about physically on the "outs," doesn't mean you don't have to work at freedom. It may be our God-given right, but it only works if we exercise it. Go within to find real freedom.
Namaste,
Debbie |
