| Travel Brings Out the True "You"
|
When
you go on vacation, you THINK you're going to see the sights of other
lands. What you really going to see, however, is the real
"you."
A few weeks ago I cashed in airline miles that had been collecting dust and
booked a trip to Europe. My intention was to have a relaxing
get-away, visiting other cultures at a leisurely pace without spending a lot of
money.
After deciding which countries to visit, I contacted friends and families of
friends for places to stay. I researched train, plane, subway and bus
schedules. When it was all said and
done, I had a five page itinerary! What happened to a relaxing getaway at
a leisurely pace?!
There's something about getting out of our normal surround that allows us to
see our true selves. My perception of myself is that I'm laid back,
easy-going, and flexible. The reality is I'm extremely goal oriented. If
I have an objective to accomplish, I'm going to accomplish it, period.
Take relaxing, for instance: "I'm going to relax on this vacation even if
it kills me!"
And accomplish my goals I did: Planning and executing a lot of minor
details to ensure a smooth trip; visited five countries in 18 days: (England, Wales, Italy, Switzerland and France); stuck to my budget;
and met new friends and reconnected with old friends.
That goal-orientation didn't serve me well, however, when I got to Venice. I was on a
mission. My goal was to photograph as many of the sights of Venice as I could before
dinner. Tired, hungry, and losing daylight, I soon realized how striving
to achieve this goal wasn't serving me. It was like pushing for a yoga
pose beyond my limits. I could feel stress welling up inside my
chest. Silently I fumed behind slower
moving TOURISTS (like I wasn't a tourist myself) who were "in my
way." What kind of relaxing holiday is this??
Day two in Venice, I decided to try a
different approach. While on vacation, I'd begun writing my second book
on the fruits of the Spirit. I picked two of these fruits to practice
that day: Beauty and Truth. I resolved to seek Beauty and Truth in
every canal, gondola, price on a menu, tourist, everything I encountered.
At one point as I ambled along ancient corridors, I slipped into a small church
to meditate. The smell of incense wafted throughout this centuries-old
place of worship. Prayer candles flickered along the walls. Taking
off my shoes, I settled into Easy Pose on the pew, closed my eyes, and began to
breathe deeply.
Those few minutes spent in stillness did more than just quiet my monkey-mind
hell-bent on "accomplishing" something. It got me to slow down
and get out of my head. By reconnecting with my body and breath, I was
able to bring presence to the experience of this beautiful city without an agenda.
After
a few minutes I made my way out of the church. Turning left, I merged
with the crowd down the narrow passageway. It felt as if I were walking
on a people mover conveyor belt like at an airport; gliding actually, my feet barely
skimming the sidewalk. It only lasted a about a minute or two before I
came down to Earth. Oh, but what a
feeling it was!
We can glide through life if we choose to rise above the little thing that we
think are important. In the end, it all gets done. As we enter the
holiday season, notice how being goal and achievement oriented can effect your
enjoyment of family and friends.
Don't get so caught up in to-do lists that you miss out on the purpose of the
season: gratitude, love, joy, peace. These fruit are not just seasonal;
they are available every day when you choose to be fully present right where
you are, with no goal, no agenda.
How
you do what you do is as important as the end result. Slow down.
Take it all in, one moment at a time. Be present. Breathe.
