from Michael, Elaine & The Team: September? Really? We know, Tempis Fugit, et al, but... September? All the signs are here: two or three days of celestial weather, every Giants game fraught, and judging by the plethora of parking on Valencia, Burning Man lights the Playa yet again. As the seasons turn, we look back on a summer of lovely, moving wedding celebrations, intimate private parties, and some rocking, large-scale corporate events. (Kobe burgers for 600, anyone?)
Plus, we're finally finished with our Christmas shopping. For last year.
ISES Annual Gala
Small Potatoes attended the not-to-be-missed International Special Events Society Gala at Terra. ISES is the premier networking and advocacy organization for our industry, and Heather, Liz, and Elaine will be increasing our presence and involvement, starting with catering an industry luncheon meeting later this month. The evening was spent catching up colleagues, forming new friendships and gossiping about anyone who couldn't make it. Check out Elaine and Heather lighting up the place. |
New Bites & Old Favorites
Thursday, August 12th saw us host another of our irregularly scheduled in-house events. These intimate gatherings allow us a chance to get to make some new friends, thank our valued vendors and clients, and show off a few new pieces. Chef Randy debuted Mini Lobster Pot Pies, paired with a little scoop of perfect Mashed Potatoes. Let's just say they were well received. Our 400 guests at Mezzanine last night went wild for the Sherried Chicken version, and we're already putting them on Fall & Holiday Menus, expanding the selection to include Wild Mushroom, Red Wine Lamb, and Short Rib. Special thanks to Ysenia & Susan from Classic Party Rentals for the beautiful tabletops, and Patrick from Greenworks, Inc. for the stunning florals.

Featured Venue Is there life beyond the City limits? Looking for an elegant venue on the Peninsula? Classic, old-world charm envelopes guests at the San Mateo County Museum. Light streams through the magnificent stained-glass domed ceiling of the rotunda, gracing handsome mosaic floors. The grand staircase has finely drafted iron balustrades leading to the balcony-like floor. Stately, green marble columns, topped by elaborately carved capitals, line the walls. Above them, building up to the splendor of the dome, are sixteen arched stained-glass windows. Suited for 400 guests for a cocktail party or 170 for sit-down dining, this is a real jewel.

Our Clients We've always suspected that our name tends to scare away the Brides from Hell. I mean, Bridezilla just isn't going to log on to a site called "tinyspuds-dot-com", is she? In fact, all of "our" wedding couples share a few traits: a focus on the true meaning of the day, a desire to create and celebrate Community, and a heartfelt, genuine concern for the pleasure of their guests. We are grateful and humbled to play a part in these occasions.

Featured Recipe Gravenstein Applesauce
Western Sonoma County is home to the Gravenstein Apple, perhaps our favorite variety for its balance of tart, sweet crunch. They're available for only a fornight or so, right about now. This recipe makes the house smell like a fairy tale. I miss my Mom.
Ingredients 1. 8 Gravenstein Apples, peeled, cored & cut into eighths 2. 1/2 Cup Water 3. Sugar, to taste 4. 2 TBL Lemon Juice 5. 1 TBL Grated Lemon Peel Directions 1. Combine apples and water in heavy-bottomed pan. Place over low heat and cook, stirring occasionally. 2. When apples begin to get tender, add sugar to taste but be sparing until apples mash easily--that's when you can tell just how sweet you want the applesauce. 3. Add lemon juice and cook until applesauce is ready to be mashed with fork. Remove from the heat and add lemon peel. 4. Mash with tines of fork, leaving some coarse texture.
