QUILT OF THE MONTH

Rain Garden
Rain Garden
Roberta Raney
(c) 2009

This quilt was inspired by my husband's work on a rain garden for our backyard.  The purpose of the garden is to filter runoff and clean pollution out of our ground waters.  The quilt's focus is on the root systems, which contain a mile or two of thread work.

Tip of the Month

·    Practice, practice, practice. Or, Practice, patience, persistence! Make small quilts, samplers, anything that keeps you stitching.
·    Look ahead of the needle to where you want to go. You will have smoother quilting lines
·    Try to maintain an even speed, whether on a longarm or a sewing machine. If you slow down, your stitches will be long; speed up and you will have tight, small stitches.
·    Clean the lint from the bobbin area (and the feed dogs on sewing machines). Fabric, batting and thread produce lint and lint build-up can create problems.
·    Take frequent breaks. Quilting puts pressure on your shoulders, neck, back and arms. And your eyes need a break as well!
·    Remember to BREATHE.

Let's see YOUR tips here next month! If selected, you will receive a 1 year subscription (or extension) to MQU!

Help For Haiti
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering because of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. As quilters, we naturally first think of making quilts for the victims. However, quilts are not practical at this time. We understand that the most immediate requests are for water, food, and medical supplies, and money to provide these vital goods. We are requesting that you consider donations to existing organizations working in Haiti so that they can more easily fill these needs.

Please make your monetary donation to a reputable organization of your own choosing. Be sure your chosen organization has an excellent reputation for providing assistance during natural disasters and can ensure that your donation will go where it is needed. Your generosity will help the people of Haiti as they begin the hard work of restoring their nation.
