Stars From the Heart

STARS FROM THE HEART
Stephanie Patterson
(c) 2009

This quilt was made with love for our Executive Editor, Vicki Anderson, during her fight with cancer. Each center block has an encouraging message. Vicki cuddles under this quilt when she needs a boost. What great friends she has! You can see this quilt in close-up, as well as all of the quilts in the Meander Publishing Quilt Collection in our Gallery on the website.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

This is my Public Service Announcement for 2010!

If you are 50, or over 50, and haven't yet had a colonoscopy, DO SO NOW! The #2 killing cancer in this country is colorectal cancer (#1 is lung cancer). No one likes to talk about it, (how do you bring 'cancer of the rectum' into polite conversation?) and the symptoms mimic so many other benign illnesses that it often goes undetected. The only way to diagnose it is with a colonoscopy. But you know what? If detected early, it is CURABLE. They have made great strides in colorectal cancer treatments in the past 5 years. 10 years ago, stage 3 was only a 30% chance of living 5 years. Today, according to my doctors, it's a 70% chance! Please, do yourself, and your loved ones, a favor and schedule an appointment today. No, it's not pleasant, but you are asleep. It is ONE DAY out of your life, to SAVE your life.

Symptoms:  Bleeding from the rectum, anemia, excessive tiredness, change in stool - particularly skinny stools or severe constipation, sudden weight loss. There is increased risk if a direct family member has been diagnosed.

How do I know all of this? On Oct 22, 2008, after months of misdiagnosis, I was told I had Stage 3 colorectal cancer. I have undergone chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries. As of December 19, 2009, all of my doctors now say I am NED (no evidence of disease); soon to be listed as cured. Why am I telling you this?If I can save one life, I will have done my job. I had symptoms for over a year and a half, even checked by doctors, but it was still missed until one doctor asked ALL the right questions and got all the symptoms lined up. If they catch it at the polyp stage, the procedure is finished during the colonoscopy and you get on with your life. Each stage after that has increased treatment requirements.  And that business about it being a disease for 'over 50 year olds'? I know many folks in my cancer support system that have been diagnosed in their 40s and even 30s. Don't wait...if you think there's an issue, get it checked out!

So, make your appointment soon.  Make 2010 the year that these statistics go down.

MQU E-NewsOur January issue has been a tremendous hit! Single copies are flying out the door. Of particular interest is Eileen Doughty's article Quilting with Physical Challenges, a story that needed telling. I cannot tell you how many emails, notes and phone calls I have received thanking us, and Eileen, for such an inspiring and wonderful story!

New Column in the Magazine

ASK KIMMY

You asked for it...now it's here! Whether a beginner or an experienced machine quilter, no matter if you are using a longarm, midarm or sit-down machine, many of you have problems and nowhere to turn. Several subscribers have emailed asking for a column to answer reader questions. Well, we heard you! Kim Brunner, renowned author, quilter, teacher and training DVD queen, will start her column ASK KIMMY in the May 2010 issue. Kimmy has the answers, and if she doesn't, she will go to other experts to get them.
Barbara Hollinger will continue to cover all of the basics in her Foundations column, and Kimmy will add to that by responding to specific problems such as "How do I turn a quilt?" or "Why does my thread break when going in only one direction?" or even "I broke a needle - now what?". I am sure you all have many more problems that she can solve for you. Email your questions to vicki@meanderpublishing.com and we will ASK KIMMY!

Tip of the Month

My sewing machine is set down in my sewing table, but the table top is not very slick, and my fabric doesn't slide as easily as I would like.  Sliding products can be expensive if you are on a budget, and are not very large.
I bought one of the large plastic "FOR RENT" signs at my grocery store for a very small amount of money.  I put the plain white side (the back)  up, after cutting out holes for the throat plate and a space to get my finger through to be able to drop my feed dogs. (On my machine it is on the back of the bed, directly behind the throat plate.)  I taped this down with masking tape to facilitate removing it if I wanted to take my machine to classes.
This really makes it very easy to slide my fabric now. Desperation is definitely the mother of invention!
