Lighter Maintenance

Butane lighters can be tricky to operate properly.  Lighter mechanics and the challenges of dealing with pressurized gas require a little extra care and attention.  The most important part of maintaining a reliable butane lighter is to fill it properly and keep the flame head (or burner) clean.

First, adjust the flame dial to the lowest possible setting.

The next and most important step to properly refilling a butane lighter is to PURGE it.  Purging gets rid of excess oxygen which remains in the gas tank.  All refillable butane lighters have a valve on the bottom that works like a tire valve.  Before refilling the lighter, you must push the "tire" like valve IN to purge/evacuate the excess gas and oxygen.  The excess oxygen and residual gas left inside will seep out and make a "hissing" sound.  By using a match stick or small screwdriver, you can repeatedly push the valve in until you cannot hear any more air escaping.  PURGING will empty the lighter's reservoir tank and ensure a clean and undiluted refill.

To FILL your lighter with butane, first turn the lighter and butane upside down.  Then gently mate the butane can with the lighter valve.  Push the butane can down for approximately fifteen seconds or until the lighter will not accept any more gas.

In addition to proper filling, it is imperative to keep the flame head/burner CLEAN and free of ash and debris.  Regular cleaning can be accomplished with an air burst from your mouth or a compressed air duster.  When using a compressed air duster, make sure you don't ignite the lighter as the contents of the air duster may be flammable and dangerous.

Be sure to keep the reciept and the insert that comes with your lighter in case it fails, it will have an address to send it to.  Usually if there is a problem you can bring it to us and we can help adjust it, or fix any minor problems.

PARTAGAS CIGARS
Partagas

Partagas wrappers are still grown in Cameroon, where the hot, foggy, sub-tropical African climate is ideal for growing full-flavored leaves that cannot be produced in any other part of the world.  Renowned for their model construction and signature taste, Partagas cigars are enticingly flavored, with rich, spicy notes for a profound, deeply flavorful smoking experience. It is no wonder that Partagas cigars are favored by cigar enthusiasts who demand the ultimate in taste and craftsmanship.

The History
Not long after Jaime Partagas sailed from Spain to Cuba, he founded the cigar brand that bears his name. The year was 1845. Yet the greatest chapters of Partagas history were written by two other men, Ramón Cifuentes and the son who was named after him. Whether working together or alone, it was those two great cigar masters who made Partagas the leading Cuban cigar. But in 196l, two years after Fidel Castro had seized control of the Cuban government, Ramón Cifuentes was forced to flee the island, never to return. Seventeen years later, he was finally able to begin creating his Partagas cigars again, this time in the Dominican Republic, where his unmatched tradition of cigar making remains alive and well.

The Cigar
The secret of today"s rich Partagas cigars lies in their wrapper leaves. Grown in Cameroon, the Central West African country where the steaming, sub-tropical climate unique to the fourth parallel is ideal for growing superb wrapper leaves, Cameroon wrappers have no equals for rich flavor. Indeed, Ramón Cifuentes determined that he could begin producing his Partagas cigars again only after he had discovered, years after the Cuban embargo had begun, that the best wrapper leaves were being grown in Cameroon rather than in Cuba.

The Experience
Strikingly rich yet never harsh, a Partagas cigar has all the flavor and character of the cigar that true connoisseurs expect.

State Tobacco Legislative Update
New York and Pennsylvaina
New York:  Last week, the New York state legislature passed and Governor Paterson signed into law an increase in the state cigarette tax rate from $2.75 per pack to $4.35 per pack, an increase in the tax on cigars, pipe tobacco, RYO tobacco and chewing tobacco from 46% to 75% of the wholesale price, a change to tax little cigars as cigarettes, and an increase in the tax on moist snuff from $.96 per ounce to $2.00 per ounce.  The cigarette tax takes effect on July 1, 2010 and there is a floor stocks tax on cigarettes.  The tax increases on all of the other tobacco products begins August 1, 2010 and there is no floor stocks tax on OTP products.

The reason I have posted this is that we need to be aware when Texas comes into session to not let them pass any new taxes...tell them enough is enough!

Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania legislature and governor agreed on a budget solution this week that does not include any increase in the state cigarette or tobacco tax rates.

Postal Service Issues Final Rule
To Implement PACT Act
On Friday, June 4th, the U.S. Postal Service issued the Final Rule to implement the provisions of the PACT Act prohibiting the mailing of cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco. A copy of the Final Rule accompanies this NATO E-News Bulletin. The Final Rule takes effect on June 29, 2010 and will prohibit the mailing of cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco in the continental United States. Any of these tobacco products deposited into the mail are subject to seizure and forfeiture and the sender of the tobacco products is subject to criminal fines, imprisonment and civil penalties. There are limited exceptions to allow packages of these tobacco products to be mailed within the States of Alaska and Hawaii and for mailing of these products between tobacco industry businesses. Pipe tobacco and cigars are not regulated by the PACT Act and can continue to be mailed.

Well worth the wait, and the money!
I could see at first glance the thought and preparation put into this cigar. The construction was of great quality, showing to me a hardy look giving a foreshadowing of what was to come. I always wet up the end of my cigar before cutting, preparing the cap so I don't damage it. The immediate flavors reminded me a little of sweetness, some hickory, the smoothness just gave me a greater interest. I could keep talking on the look and taste but I am so ready to tell you about the smoke!

First draw, smooth, in my mind what I would want from any cigar. A well balanced sweetness, with some woody notes. I could say I taste spice jumping in just at the right time. About an inch in the ashes were stacking well, on the other hand the burn was slightly uneven, yet corrected it self quickly. The spice intensifies opening the second half of this smoke.

Through out the smoke the flavors would change up, getting better as to say "We're not done yet!" The sweetness/nutty flavors become more pronounced toning down the spice some. I think I even get a leathery taste. I want to say all the flavors are smooth, creamy, and easy making it where I could smoke all the way until the fire reaches my finger tips.

From start to end I can tell the time, thought, and effort taken in developing this cigar! This cigar has been described as a powerful and intoxicating flavor with a complex rich finish. In my eyes and mouth "Powerful" in the way of this cigar taking charge teaching me what a well balanced cigar can do,"intoxicating" very much so, I could not get or talk enough about this cigar, "complex rich flavor" I don't know how complex it is but the richness is there and very impressive. It is about an hour and half smoke, don't rush this one, it wont let you. All I really can say now is "Hello Ashton Virgin Sun Grown"
