Cigar Lounge Underway!
At last we are building..
Great news! We finally cleared the hurdles for the new Cigar Lounge in downtown McGregor. The City was holding us up with the bureaucracy that cities are known for, since December of last year.
The contractors are breaking it up and we have been working for a few weeks now. The tentative opening will be July 1st, with a Grand Opening celebration in the next month or so.
We have a Website at www.tjcigar.com and will keep you updated on events, specials and everything going on there.
The Lounge will be BYOB, have a full retail tobacco shop, Arbuckles Coffee, free Wi-Fi, several large flat screen TV's and sitting areas. The ventilation system will be in place too.
Our humidor will be the largest in the area and stocked to fulfill your needs. In addition we will have fully humidified cigar lockers for those who wish.
There will be an expanded pipe section with premium pipe tobacco that we mix ourselves.
The store is located on 317 right in the middle of downtown and we have created parking in the back for those who wish to stay off the highway.
There is the best Italian food right across the street and a steakhouse as well. Stay tuned for updates and check our website for further information!

Cigar 101
Cigar Myths and legends
Cuban Cigars Are "The Best"
This statement is widely disputed. It is not in dispute that Cuban Cigars are one of the best made. The majority of cigars sold in Europe are from Cuba. The source of the quality of Cuban Cigars comes from the soil in Cuba, and the water table, which fluctuates, crystallizing the nicotine, then re-infuses the leaf. This natural process is trying to be artificially reproduced in the Dominican with varying success.
The problem comes with volume. The demand for Cuban cigars is large, and therefore the quality goes down when the product is rushed. There are those brands which take the time needed, and others who rush to meet the demand. In addition, the quality is good when the cigar leaves the rollers table, but it is up to the retailer to maintain it.
In my experience, most of the Mexican retailers fall short in this regard, lowering the great quality to one of only moderate. If the quality is to be maintained the retailers must do a better job of keeping the cigars maintained in the proper environmentally controlled environment.
I have smoked Cubans, and most other cigars. Luxury tobaccos are Luxury because of the care given to them by people who love the business. Those retailers who are in this for the quick dollar need to be avoided. It will be easy to identify them, open humidors, no humidity, untidy boxes, dry cigars.
A rusty, rundown corvette is still a corvette. A dry Cuban cigar is still a Cuban cigar. This is where the difference in opinion comes in to play. As Cigar smokers we know quality when we smoke it.
Life is too short to smoke a bad cigar...
Romanticism plays a big part in the world of luxury tobacco. It is a romantic process to smoke a great cigar; sitting back watching the smoke, smelling the aromas, tasting the notes of flavor, and savoring your time. Luxury tobacco is inherently sensual and romantic. But real romance and pleasure need no embellishment. And the actual magic and wonder of luxury tobacco is enough, without the myths and lies. Enhanced appreciation requires Enlightenment, and that requires The Truth.

* "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"
* "Land of the Free"
* "No Taxation Without Representation"
These are the principles on which America was founded. Unfortunately for cigar enthusiasts, the age-old pleasure of enjoying a cigar is under attack. On a daily basis, your freedom to enjoy a cigar is being stripped away by an overzealous, anti-smoking movement. Their tactics are varied; be it through supporting onerous cigar taxes or lobbying government for restrictive smoking bans. The anti-smoking movement will stop at nothing short of the complete prohibition of tobacco.
The Declaration of Independence of the United States ensures that all men and women have the freedom and the right to the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, cigar enthusiasts have slowly allowed these rights to be removed. Over the past twenty years, the anti-tobacco movement has broadened their reach and scope and are moving towards abolishing ALL forms of tobacco, including cigars. Until recently there has essentially been very little organized opposition to their actions. And why should there have been? Most of us assumed that their attention was directed towards cigarettes.
Unfortunately, we were wrong.
This organization is sponsored by most of the major cigar companies and is consumer oriented. It would be in our best interests to support them by becoming a member and staying informed about upcoming issues.

The Legend of Cain
The recently released Cain cigars are the newest creation from Oliva and Sam Leccia, the man behind the popular Nub cigars. These cigars are "straight ligero", made up of a blend of Nicaraguan ligeros from farms in Esteli, Condega and the Jalapa Valley. Available in a Habano and a Maduro wrapper in torpedo, robusto and toro sizes. Also available is the Cain F, touted as a "Cain on steroids" and blended with a higher percentage of Esteli ligeros, the strongest of the three. The regular (is it safe to call a straight ligero cigar "regular"?) is known to be powerful. I'm scared of what the Cain F might do.
In order to bring out the smoother flavors of these tobaccos and tame the 'edge' of the ligeros, they are triple fermented.
This makes for a very smooth, strong cigar and has quickly risen to one of my favorite cigars...well done |

IPCPR Working with Association's FDA Team, CAA on Latest FDA Notice Regarding Latest FDA Developments
April 30, 2010--On April 26, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to which the FDA reports, published its semiannual regulatory agenda as required by law. The agenda is an inventory of rulemaking actions currently under development within the Department.
Included under the "Proposed Rule Stage" was a notice that the FDA intends to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking "which would deem cigars to be subject to the Tobacco Control Act and include provisions to address public health concerns raised by cigars."
The notice indicated a target date of June 2010 for publishing the notice.
The Tobacco Control Act that was signed into law in June, 2009 gave FDA the authority over all tobacco products. However, FDA only has immediate authority to regulate cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, and smokeless tobacco - not cigars or pipe tobacco.
In order to regulate cigars and/or pipe tobacco, the FDA is required to go through a rulemaking process. The notification that the FDA is working on a proposed rule is the beginning of what could be a lengthy process and is difficult to predict when the proposed rule will be issued (FDA frequently misses its target dates).
Once FDA proposes a rule, the agency is required to publish it in the Federal Register and allow at least 60 days for interested parties to comment. That is followed by the FDA's own review period (It is impossible to predict how long FDA will take to evaluate the comments). After that review, FDA could issue another proposed rule, a final rule, or refer a proposed rule to its Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee for a report or recommendation.
It is critical to understand that much is unknown at this time. The lack of detail accompanying the FDA's notice means there is not a lot we know about what FDA might be thinking at this stage. It is important to remain vigilant until more details are known. The IPCPR continues its constant consultation with its FDA consultants to stay on top of this latest development. We also continue talking and the sharing of information with the CAA so everyone may be up-to-date and on the same page.
Now, what does all this have to do with Cigar smokers? If we take the lessons garnered from dealings with cigarettes and smokeless, we can assume higher taxes, smoking restrictions, label and advertising constraints, anti-smoking groups screaming for stricter guidelines and the list is endless.
As a tobacconist I have been dealing with all manner of taxes both Federal and State, restrictions on every facet of the industry and it is not over by a long shot. Now the FDA wants to engage Cigars and Pipe smokers with the same. Make no mistake, unless we stop them by the end all Luxury tobaccos will be taxed out of reach by the common Cigar smoker.
No amount of reason will prevent it for it is not about health, or safety, or anything else...it is only about the money and prejudice.
I encourage all those interested to become politically literate and to know who their State and Federal Representatives are, and to send letters or emails to voice an opinion. We will try to enable this for you to make it easier.
It is our right and privilege to question our leaders and have them do our bidding, but they have to know what that is...they will listen to the squeaky wheel and give it the grease...as it were.
Or, we can just take what comes, that is the easy road. Time to decide between what is right and what is easy

DonTomas
Sungrown
Looks like I am headed off my beaten path and trying something a little more toned down. I have never really been partial to the earthy toned cigars, so grabbing the Don Tomas Sun Grown Robusto took me awhile.
Now that I have tried one, I am disappointed in myself for waiting so long!
Let's start with the wrapper, smell was a light earthy aroma, but very mild. I have heard it described as a woody & hay smell, how ever it is described, it smells good to me! Color is a medium brown, smooth feel, vains are small. First glance, a well constructed cigar.
Let's light up! Simple, that's how I can describe the flavor. I taste a little woody, mildly earthy, possibly a bit nutty, but not toward the sweet side. This cigar is said to be a medium bodied cigar, and that is hitting the nail on the head! No need to have a heavy dinner or stiff drink, something simple like a light beer or lemon tea will do.
I could see this cigar good while grilling up your favorite steak or maybe playing golf. I am a third of the way through, never got too bold or too heavy. Thick smoke, but easy flavors! Burn was excellent, no need to babysit this one, but does have a slight residence (works well with this cigar). Ashes stacked great and stayed on about an inch and half into the beginning! This is a slow burning cigar and would be perfect with the entertainments I mentioned earlier!
I must say this is a simple, pocket friendly cigar! I won't be waiting to smoke my next one!
