Lancero Cigars
A connoisseurs guide
Lancero means "Lancer" in Spanish and was created in Cuba with the creation of the Cohiba brand in the 1960's. The original size was made in a 7 1/2 X 38. Outside Cuba in the late 1990's the standard ring gage went to 40. The size is considered a Gran Panatela, or "Long" Panatela.
This cigar size has long been revered by those who make cigars as it has a wrapper-to-filler ratio that changes the cigar "blend" to strongly favor the specific region the wrapper came from without being adulterated by excessive filler and binder.
This characteristic is clearly evident when you are used to smoking a certain brand and are used to the subtle differences between a robusto and churchill. These 50-58 ring gage cigars have a wrapper, filler and binder ratio that helps certain characteristics of the cigar. The wrapper gives most of the flavor, the binder and filler either give notes of spice, body, aroma or other hints. They may also tone the wrapper down as in the case of the Ligero leaf, which is very strong.
In Lanceros, the wrapper has to be of sufficient quality that it has to carry the cigar by itself. Quality control is very hard with this size as it is very easy to over fill or under fill the cigar. Too little and the wrapper burns hot giving it a bitter taste, too much and the cigar won't draw.
This cigar has had problems over it's lifespan and has gained a reputation from consumers as a difficult smoke. Some do not like it simply because of it's size. Back in the late 1990's and early 2000's, Cuba was notorious for sending out boxes of unsmokable cigars because the draw was too difficult. I myself had a box of these and remember them well. In fact I still have a few left.
Because of the design of the cigar, it has become more of a connoisseurs cigar not unlike wine. The experience we are looking for in this cigar is stimulating the palate, not with copious amounts of smoke but intricate specific tastes.
While this may not be for some or even most cigar smokers, as this is a departure from the generally accepted paradigm of a cigar, one should at least try it.
Many of the cigar companies are making this size now so you can find the region you wish to try fairly easily. Just remember it will be different, and it might be great!

Cigar 101
Cigar Myths and legends
Cigar Licking
Myth: An entire cigar should be thoroughly licked/wet-down before being smoked.
Truth: This practice was common a century ago when humidification was not as accurate and consistent as it is today. Wetting the wrapper would help keep the cigar from unraveling, but it is not necessary when smoking a well conditioned cigar.
Maduros Are Stronger
Myth: Dark Maduro wrappers give consumers the impression that Maduro cigars are stronger.
Truth: While Maduros undergo a longer Fermentation, they do not increase in strength, rather they become richer and a little sweeter, as the sugars develop.
Perfect Consistency Myth: Perfect Consistency Exists.
Truth: It is impossible to create a perfectly consistent cigar and blend from one batch to another, much less from one crop/year to another. In addition, it is impossible to construct every cigar perfectly. The nature of handmade cigars requires some deviation. It is OK for a cigar to burn a little crooked and for cigars to taste a little different from batch to batch. In fact, the human senses cannot taste or smell perfectly, so we would not even recognize Perfect Consistency if it were possible.
Perfect Consistency is more likely to be found in the wine and/or spirits industry where the final product is a liquid. Liquids are much easier to measure, rate, and blend, so the final product is more likely to be consistent. |
* "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"
* "Land of the Free"
* "No Taxation Without Representation"
These are the principles on which America was founded. Unfortunately for cigar enthusiasts, the age-old pleasure of enjoying a cigar is under attack. On a daily basis, your freedom to enjoy a cigar is being stripped away by an overzealous, anti-smoking movement. Their tactics are varied; be it through supporting onerous cigar taxes or lobbying government for restrictive smoking bans. The anti-smoking movement will stop at nothing short of the complete prohibition of tobacco.
The Declaration of Independence of the United States ensures that all men and women have the freedom and the right to the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, cigar enthusiasts have slowly allowed these rights to be removed. Over the past twenty years, the anti-tobacco movement has broadened their reach and scope and are moving towards abolishing ALL forms of tobacco, including cigars. Until recently there has essentially been very little organized opposition to their actions. And why should there have been? Most of us assumed that their attention was directed towards cigarettes.
Unfortunately, we were wrong.
This organization is sponsored by most of the major cigar companies and is consumer oriented. It would be in our best interests to support them by becoming a member and staying informed about upcoming issues.

FDA Issues Final Rule on Selling and Marketing of Cigarettes and Smokeless Tobacco
The FDA Center for Tobacco Products has republished a rule as required by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act that took place in 2009. This republished rule becomes effective June 22, 2010 and restricts the sale, distribution, and marketing of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco as follows:
Retail Sale and Distribution Regulations:
- Prohibits the sale of cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products to people younger than 18.
- Requires retailers to obtain photo identification of any customer that appears to be younger than 27 years old to verify that the customer is at least 18 years old.
- Prohibits the sale of cigarette packages with fewer than 20 cigarettes.
- Requires that cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products be sold in a direct, face-to-face exchange between the retailer and the customer.
- Prohibits the sale of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products in vending machines, self-service displays, or other impersonal modes of sales, except that vending machines and self-service displays are allowed in retail stores where the retailer ensures that no person younger than 18 years of age is present, or permitted to enter, at any time.
- Prohibits giving out free samples of cigarettes and allows free samples of smokeless tobacco products only in qualified adult facilities.
So, what does this have to do with you? Everything, in a word. As tobacco users of every form we each have had to endure limits on our freedoms. I believe that we have gone out of our way when we smoke not to offend others and that has translated to a passive endurance of these restrictions. I say NOT ONE MORE! Not one more restriction, not one more tax, not one more ordinance. We have given enough and if we do not stop these unfair restrictions at every turn they will continue and be even more restrictive.
I do not have any delusions, as is proved by history, that these seemingly unimportant laws will be enforced against cigars, pipe tobacco and every other form of tobacco. There is already a proposed law taking the excise tax on pipe tobacco from $1.10 to $24.78 a pound. Why? Greed, intolerance, and prejudices.
Lawsuits led to the MSA, MSA led to taxes, taxes led to this and that law, ordinances, more and more laws, more and more taxes. This is what the TEA Party stands for Taxed Enough Already. This FDA authority over tobacco thing is only the next step. Remember, Congress is supposed to do the will of the people and according to Ben Franklin does not have the right or mandate to protect us against ourselves when engaging in a lawful practice..ie...smoking.
I plan to make my voice heard to those in office, and to vote in those sympathetic to the rights of Americans, be it GOD given or legislated by mortals.

Lancero Macanudo Portofino
This cigar had me very excited from the moment it made it's appearance in the store. This cigar comes in a metal tube with a cedar shaving to light it.
When I first saw the cigar, I noticed the length was long, yet the ring size was very small. After giving it a good look over, I think it is a well constructed cigar, and then I took no time in cutting and lighting this one. I was very happy with the taste right away. I noticed it started out smooth, and simple, with woody notes.
About an inch into the cigar it was burning even, and the ashes were stacking very well. The description for this cigar is a mild bodied cigar, and I couldn't agree more. This was a very easy smoke for me. A third of the way through the cigar it was a little stronger, but I still enjoyed every minute. I can say without a doubt as of right now this is my favorite out of the Macanudo line.
I already have an extra one of these in my humidor and am looking forward to my next time smoking this cigar.
Origin: Dominican Republic Wrapper: Connecticut Shade Filler: Dominican (Piloto Cubano), Mexican Binder: Mexico San Andrean
