Hi there!
Living life our way takes courage doesn't it?
Being an authentic leader either at work or at home, can be frustrating, demanding and exhausting at times and we need to know when to stop, relax and think clearly.
This weeks short story shows us just how important it can be to consider our reaction when someone is unkind, unfair or unreasonable towards us. We do have a decision to make - and that decision can make all the difference to the outcome.
Yours in authenticity and NOT chasing the snake......
Be Real,
Paul

Do you chase the snake?...
"Ouch" cried Bill as the snake bit into his leg. "I've been bitten!" he cried out to his brother.
Ben turned towards him. "Stand still Bill!" he shouted, "don't move!". He was worried that Bill might react in a way that he knew could harm him.
Bill was far too angry to stand still. He was looking for the snake that had bitten him and he could see if slithering towards the bushes on the far side of the road. Bill was determined to exact his revenge on the snake and wanted to find the snake before it disappeared. He set off after the snake, thrashing about in anger, screaming at the snake. He could feel the poison in his leg and he wanted to find the snake and make it pay. But the poison was spreading and slowing him down.
"Stand still!" said Ben. "You must stop and think!".
But Bill was too angry to listen. And the more the pain grew, the more angry he became with the snake. He was starting to feel dizzy as the poison had made its way into his system, pumped around his body by his heart that was pounding in his chest, Bill's body was shutting down and he began to topple before eventually falling over,
Ben dashed towards his brother. There was no sign of the snake - it had spread it's poison and had long since slithered away into the shadows.
Bill was barely awake as his brother reached him. Ben spoke gently. "Bill, you just needed to be still. The poison would have stayed where it was. Instead, by chasing the snake. you encouraged the poison to spread through your body."
Bill's need for revenge had nearly killed him.
Ben reached into his pocket and took out some water. Bill breathed deeply and took a sip, feeling the cleansing water calming his spirits and cooling his anger. Bill looked at Ben and smiled. "If only I was more like you Ben - I always chase the snake"
Ben touched his brothers arm and smiled. "When we chase the snake that bites us, we just spread its poison into our system. We have to be still, let it go and the poison will leave us more quickly".
Bill knew he was right and vowed never to chase a snake again....
**** So what do YOU do when someone bites you in business or in life?
How do YOU react when you feel someone has said or behaved towards you in away that upsets you?
What do you do when someone challenges your authenticity?
If you seek revenge, powered by anger, you simply pump the poison around your system. Being still, calm and letting go will allow the poison to stay localised and not spread to other parts of your life and business.
So next time a snake bites, remember Bill, and then act like Ben - you'll be glad you did! |
