The Real Newsletter

Hi there!

Are you trying too hard?

Is success something that comes quicker the harder we try - or does it flow easier when we just let go and be ourselves?

It's a tricky question isn't it?   We know we have to take action and we have to work hard but why is it that sometimes the harder we try - the harder we seem to fall?

What's even more frustrating is when we watch people succeed and they don't appear to have had to try very hard at all to reach their goal.   Life can seem so cruel can't it?

But maybe there is a way to look at our journey towards success that might allow us to "go easy" on ourselves from time to time.  This weeks story is one that you'll know well but with a twist! It's a tiny bit longer - but stick with it, I know you'll get the point.

So grant yourself 5 minutes before you start your week to read the story and watch the video too - you may have seen it before, but it sums up this weeks message very powerfully and I always find it motivates me.

Yours in authenticity and steady, determined progress, oh - and those inches.....

Inch by Inch...

It wasn't fair.

Terry knew what he wanted.  He could see it.  He could smell it.  He knew it would make a massive difference in his life.  But each time he made progress his friend Harry would appear ahead of him.  Harry was always beating him and enjoyed telling all their friends how fast he was at achieving his goals.  He even poked fun at Terry from time to time, saying he was just lumbering fool that never got where he wanted to go.

But deep inside Terry, a voice would always quietly and gently whisper to him.... "keep going Terry - you are nearly there"... and Terry would just keep going.  But he was so tired that on some days, he would hardly be able to move from his bed.

"Hi Terry!" said Harry.

Terry's heart sank.  He didn't want to hear about Harry's latest success.  But he knew what was coming next.

"I've made it again Terry" said Harry, with a sneer and a chuckle.  Harry danced around Terry pointing his finger and laughing.  "You're never going to succeed Terry so why don't you just give up".

Harry was always winning and he loved to tell people how good he was.  Terry preferred to keep himself to himself, but on some days he would feel very down with his lack of progress.

But Terry was completely fed up with Harry's persistent criticism.  And he wanted to show Harry that he could succeed.

"OK Harry", said Terry, "I think it's time I showed you what I can do. Let's have a race and see who succeeds first".

"What?" said Harry in complete amazement?  "You want to race ME - the fastest, most successful, most amazing guy here?  OK Terry, let's go for it!"

Terry thought for a while and mustering all his energy, he started his journey towards success.  Within seconds, Harry had disappeared - off to show everyone just how brilliant he was.   But Terry put his head down and kept going.  He just kept putting one foot in front of the other.  He ignored everything around him - even some of his friends that were telling him to stop.  His friends knew how hard Terry had tried to succeed before and were worried about him.  He knew that they were telling him to stop because they loved him and didn't want to see him suffer the pain of defeat.  But Terry just kept going....

As Terry stumbled on, he thought about his dream.  He knew that if he could just keep going, that one day, he'd finally reach where he wanted to go.  The only thing he couldn't do was give up.  He couldn't quit. He had to show Harry that no matter how slow he was, that he could still reach his dream.

Suddenly, his head bumped into something.  Something soft; something green...

Terry's heart leapt.  He sniffed and looked up. He'd made it!

He'd reached the lettuces.

His journey hadn't really been a race at all and he'd forgotten all about Harry.

He started to munch on the lettuce.   He realised that it didn't matter whether Harry had beaten him. Harry the Hare might have been fast, arrogant and cocky, but Terry the Tortoise had made it to where he wanted to be - and he'd made it on his own terms.

Inch by inch, he'd made it to the lettuce. Slowly, steadily, and with determination he had achieved success the only way that counts - his way.

And it felt good.

And Harry?  Well Terry knew it didn't matter what had happened to Harry.  Harry may have taken the fame and the glory.  He may have reached the lettuces first and told everyone about it.  But Terry had arrived at the lettuces by doing it his way and that was all that mattered........

So who are the "Harry the Hare's" in your world that you compare yourself against.?

Who are the friends that tell you to stop because they are frightened for you?

And are you going to keep your head down and find the inches to keep going?

Because life is a game of inches. And we need to gather a team around us that will help us find our inches, keep us moving forward and will share our dream.

Watch this very famous video clip and then go ahead and find your inches. And then find someone, or some people who will help you find your inches

And just like Terry - your future will taste soooooo good.......

So what are you going to do now - grab your inches and live... or give up and die?
