For Alumnae of America's Junior Miss and Distinguished Young Women
What Does the New Name Mean to You?
Junior Misses ARE Distinguished Young Women.

The announcement of our new name provokes a flood of mixed emotions - especially to those of us who participated in Junior Miss and wax nostalgic for that era. So you might ask yourself, "How do I relate to our new name?" "Am I still a Junior Miss?" and "What do I call myself now?" Rest assured that the Alumnae Council is here to help you. We're in this transition together.

To encompass participants past and present, the formerly AJM Alumnae Council is now The Alumnae Council for Distinguished Young Women and America's Junior Miss. We will refer to our sisterhood as The Alumnae Council for short. Membership will be open to any young woman who participated in a Junior Miss, America's Young Woman of the Year or Distinguished Young Women program.

We will provide more tips for using our new name in our quarterly newsletter and will continue to provide information and resources on our webpage as it is available. We are looking to broaden our communication to past participants through social media and are actively looking for volunteers to help us in that capacity this year. (If interested and you're a social media maven, then email TK at TK.)

YOU ARE STILL AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR PROGRAM! You have a special place in our family! We hope that you will choose to stay onboard!

Together, we are Embracing our Past, Living our Present and Shaping our Future as we advance together. After all, Junior Misses ARE Distinguished Young Women.

The Alumnae Council had an amazing year, helping state and local programs and their participants, assisting the national office with the rebranding efforts, hosting reunions in Chicago and Mobile, and awarding four scholarship awards at the 53rd National Finals.

Dee Ann Allen, Leigh Knosher and Ashley Halfman represented the rest of the Alumnae Council Board as they presented the $1,000 cash scholarships to Katie von Diezelski of Louisiana, Nina Montgomery of New Jersey and Meagan Wood of Missouri during the First Preliminary Awards Ceremony.

On the final night, Dee Ann Allen also awarded a $1,000 cash scholarship to Meagan Wood of Missouri. Meagan was selected as the Spirit Award by her peers before the show. The Spirit Award is presented to the member of the Class of 2010 who best represents the spirit of the program to her peers, thus making it one of the most respectable awards.

The Alumnae Council also hosted the Council Pizza Party for state and local volunteers and past participants on Friday night following the Second Preliminary. With pizza and a dj, everyone enjoyed some fun before the big day arrived.

We'd love to see you in Mobile next summer! Make plans to join us for the 54th National Finals on June 23, 24 & 25, 2011.
Alumnae Reunions

Mobile, AL

More than 90 past participants reconnected during the Alumnae Reunion in Mobile.
mobile reunion

With almost 90 in attendance, the Mobile Reunion was a lot of fun as past participants reconnected with each other and we all waited in anticipation to find out the new name for the America's Junior Miss program. The group was made up of past participants who now serve as program volunteers, the returning members of the Class of 2009 (aka the "Has-Beens"), and other past participants who either live on the Gulf Coast or were in town for the National Finals. We hope to make the Mobile Reunion a traditional event during National Finals every year.

Bakersfield, CA
The Alumnae Council will host an Alumnae Reunion in conjunction with the Distinguished Young Women of California program on August 7, 2010. More details are to come! If you are interested in helping or attending please let us know by emailing Cassidy@DistinguishedYW.org.

Atlanta, GA
The Alumnae Council is planning to host an Alumnae Reunion in Atlanta in the upcoming year. If you live in the area and are interested in helping please contact Cassidy@DistinguishedYW.org.
Letter from the Council President

Talk about an exciting time at Nationals this year! The revealing of our new name took center stage Saturday night. I am very hopeful that this name change will bring a great future to our program for years to come.

Our Mobile Alumnae Reunion was a huge success with almost 90 in attendance! The photographer got a surprise when we discreetly showed our Spanx in a photo to thank our new sponsor.

It was wonderful to meet the Class of 2010 and tell them we are giving them a 6 month membership to the Council. So hopefully, we will see them continue their involvement with our January membership drive.

The Council pizza party with our favorite DJ for the state reps was a hit as usual with dancing going on past midnight!

Thanks to your support this year - we were able to help many state programs, help with special needs and fund the BYBS and Spirit awards at Nationals. My hope is that with your continued support to your Alumnae Council, we can help others in the spirit of this wonderful program!

Thank you for caring!
