Michelle Rodgers AJM 2009 |
So many people have misconceptions about the Junior Miss program, and a few years ago, I could have counted myself as one of them. When a friend of mine participated in the Clark County Junior Miss program, I remember thinking, "She really doesn't seem like the pageant type." I soon realized that Junior Miss is something so different. Its not a beauty pageant at all- it's a scholarship program that helps young women recognize their own potential, display their years of hard work and dedication, and make friends with other young women with whom they share a passion and drive. So imagine my disappointment when I introduce myself to a variety of people as 'America's Junior Miss 2009,' only to receive comments such as, "Oh, like a beauty pageant? Or "Is that like Junior Miss America?" - the same things that I thought when I first heard about the program. America's Junior Miss holds a lot of meaning to a lot of different people. To most of us, it means good things - scholarships, friendships, outstanding young women, and amazing volunteers. But to those who don't know what our program is all about, the name represents things that our program is not. I can only imagine the frustration for many of you as you try to recruit sponsors, volunteers and participants who are constantly confused and misled as to what our program is all about. Such an exceptional and rewarding program shouldn't have a name that it's fighting against- it should have a name that aids it and enhances the meaning. I know the AJM Board of Directors is currently making some important decisions about the future of the organization - decisions that may include a name change. I know firsthand that the men and women who devote their time and energy to serving on the board are fully invested in making sure that AJM has a long and bright future ahead. I trust that the decision that they make will be the right one for all of us and hope that we can all rally around it, even if we don't all agree on the outcome. After all, it's still the same program that we all know and love - no matter what we call it.

Women strutting the latest fashions across the runway - its not New York City. Its the 2nd Annual 7th on the Hill Fashion Events that took place on March 3 in Mobile, Alabama.
Rock the Ages was the theme for the morning show that included brunch, trend updates, a fashion show, and live auction packages. The traditional red carpet was replaced with a pink one and women from around the Mobile area joined in the fun as Mobile boutiques showcased the upcoming spring fashions.
That evening, young women from Bayside Academy, UMS-Wright, St. Pauls Episcopal and McGill Toolen produced the Rock the Runway show, AJM's first Dads and Daughters event, that featured a fashion show, a live dj, dessert and exciting auction packages.
AJM raised more than $25,000 and more than 600 people attended the events. You can see pictures and videos from both events at www.ajm.org/about/events/fashion. |
AJM is currently working on a grant application for AFLAC and we need to know if we have any volunteers, has beens, or supporters who work for this company. If you work for AFLAC please email emilyann@ajm.org.

Connect with the AJM Board |
Shea Grandquest grew up in Mobile knowing that he wanted to get involved with AJM. "I have always wanted to be a part of AJM and give my time so that others can benefit," he says. So in 2008, he joined the AJM board of directors.
Since then, he says the most rewarding parts of being acive on the Board are the relatiships with new people and experieces he's had.
Shea earned a BA in Communications from Spring Hill College and is the General Manager of Local 15 News, the NBC affiliate station in Mobile, Alabama. He is married to Heather and together they have three children: Tyler, Payton and Morgan. In their free time they enjoy sailing, going to sporting events and attending Eastern Shore Presbyterian Church. Shea hopes his daughter will participate in the Junior Miss program one day.
Phil Kaiser is the longest serving AJM board member to date. He began officially volunteering on the national board of directors in 1976, but has been involved with the program in various ways since 1960.
Phil graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.S. in Economics and MA in Business before he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He later began work with Mercantile Stores Company in New York City and was sent to Mobile where he became the President of Gayfers department stores and Maison Blanche for 19 years. It was through his employment with Mercantile Stores and Gayfers that Phil became involved with America's Junior Miss.
Now retired, Phil prefers to spend his time with his "new bride," as he lovingly refers to her, travelling, collecting rocks and minerals and playing golf. Phil and Liz both serve in several civic organizations and Phil holds board positions in many of them. |
Join the AJM Alumnae Council, a sisterhood of past participants that aims to assist Junior Miss programs and provide networking opportunities for Junior Misses.
