Many thanks to everyone who participated in one of the 10 conference calls to discuss the recommendations from the Marshall Strategy group. All the research, interviews, surveys and feedback from the presentation have helped us clarify AJM's identity. There seems to be consensus around the statement that Marshall recommends to describe the AJM program: America's Junior Miss is an empowerment program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments.
-
By encouraging continued education and providing college scholarships
-
By developing self-confidence and the abilities to interview effectively, to speak in public, to perform on stage and to build interpersonal relationships
-
By encouraging and showcasing excellence in academic achievement, physical fitness, on-stage performance skills, and the ability to think and communicate clearly,
-
By creating opportunities to beneficially inspire the lives of others
If you haven't had an opportunity to watch and listen to the presentation, please go to www.ajm.org/new/branding and click on the October 2009 presentation link. It's encouraging to hear the positive feedback and the willingness to be open to change if it will help us grow and improve the AJM program. Our next challenge is to determine whether we can move forward with this positioning and maintain our current name, America's Junior Miss. Marhsall Strategy recommends that we change the name to correct the disconnect between what people think of AJM (our image) and what AJM really does (our identity). A group of 10 dynamic women from within the AJM family are working with me on some alternative naming options. Our goal is to find the one that captures the essence of AJM and piques the curiosity of potential participants, sponsors, and volunteers. Once we have some viable alternatives, we will work with Marshall Strategy to determine the best options for positioning AJM - including our core statement, other messaging, and a possible name change. The board will review all this information and the recommendations and make a decision on the next steps. We hope to complete the process by the end of the year so we can roll out any changes at National Finals in June. We understand the anxiety that goes along with any change and will work hard to make any transition go as smoothly as possible.
