Dear Rivermont Community,

The CHANGEMAKERS

They are everywhere:  young people who refuse the narrow label of "student."  Of course, they take care of schoolwork, but they also look outside of themselves and see a world full of need - and they want to help.  (Independent School, Spring 2012)

Twelve independent school students were selected to represent the thousands of "changemakers" in our schools.  With representatives from schools such as Catlin Gabel in Oregon, Marlborough and Menlo in California, Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico, Punahou in Hawai'i, and Phillips Andover in Massachusetts, Rivermont Collegiate is excited to be represented by senior Pavane Gorrepati.  We are proud that a student from Rivermont is recognized in such an elite group and, of course, most definitely proud of Pavane's accomplishments.

It is important to remember that this is a "representative" group.  Though these students have done exceptional, dare I say Extraordinary! things, they are not the exceptions but the norm.  We expect extraordinary things from our students and they consistently deliver.  Indeed, we could have featured many of our students as "changemakers" - selecting from the writers, illustrators, scientists, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, actors, athletes, musicians, and all around caring people who make up our freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes.

The Rivermont Experience is about academics for sure, but that is only the beginning.  Our mission challenges us to develop not only our students' intellect, but their character and creativity.  It reminds us that these achievements are not only for ourselves, but to be shared with the community - local, state, national, and global.  And, it doesn't stop at graduation - it is a life-long commitment.

Early in the year, I shared a list of "demonstrators of learning" as defined by The New Vision Collaborative, enumerating what students need to know and be able to do in the 21st century.  Tony Wagner from the Graduate School of Education developed Seven Survival Skills after interviewing over 600 CEOs about qualities essential for success in the 21st century.  Recently, the MIT Sloan Management Review featured an article by Leslie Brokaw entitled, "Skills That Will Remain in Demand in a Computer-Rich World" which heavily referenced Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee's article in the Winter 2012 issue of the Review listing skills that have a future:

            - applied math and statistics

            - negotiation and group dynamics

            - good writing

            - framing problems and solving open-ended problems

            - persuasion

            - human interaction and nurturing

Because Rivermont's mission does not focus on rigorously developing intellect alone, there is significant congruence between the Rivermont Experience and items on the above-mentioned lists.  Rivermont students consistently demonstrate knowledge and skills vital to success in the 21st century.  Rivermont, as a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, receives research and guidance from the NAIS Committee on Schools of the Future to help align curriculum and programs with knowledge and skills students need to be leaders in business, professional life, and civic responsibility.  Our network of independent schools, along with the research and guidance of academia, business, and futurists, provides a rich testing ground for ideas and collaboration.  One such example is the Rivermont Fifth Grade's participation in the NAIS 20/20 Challenge with other schools in the United States and across the globe.

Harvard's Dean of Admissions, William Fitzsimmons, has been quoted, "It would be much better for the country to have students focusing on high school courses that, based on evidence, will prepare them well for college and also prepare them well for the real world beyond college instead of spending enormous amounts of time trying to game the SAT."

Where there are no spectators and only participants,

Where excellence has many faces,

And with the expertise of a caring and knowledgeable faculty and staff,

Rivermont is Extraordinary!  Rivermont is Collegiate!  Rivermont has the Future in sight!

Rick St. Laurent

Headmaster

Please remember that we are hosting a special parent workshop with Jim Bisenius, Bully-Proofing Youth, on Monday, March 5 at 6:00 PM.  A light supper will be served from 5:15-5:55 PM.  Although this is an adult evening, you are welcome to invite friends, neighbors, and colleagues.  It is important for at least one parent from each family to attend.

2011-12 Annual Fund Classroom Challenge

The 2011-12 Annual Fund is underway!  The Classroom Challenge kicked off this week - your student(s) should have brought home information and donation envelopes.  When we pursue funding from foundations, a standard question is, 'What percent of your parents, faculty, and trustees donate?'  We would like to say 100%!  Faculty/staff and trustees have contributed 100% to this year's Annual Fund.  Last year, 76% of Rivermont parents participated; Parents' Council urges parents to match trustee and faculty 100% participation.

Please consider making your donation today!  If you have already donated, your donation will count towards the Classroom Challenge and we thank you for your support!  Contribute a minimum of $5.00 between now and March 9 to help your student(s)' classroom be eligible for special rewards!
 Annual Fund Classroom Challenge Image
Each class, PS-8th, to reach 100% participation by March 9 will receive an ice cream party!  Each class, 9th-12th, to reach 100% participation by March 9 will receive a pizza party!  In addition, the FIRST class, PS-8th, and the FIRST class, 9th-12th, to reach 100% participation will receive an extra surprise!

Note: One donation applies to all children in your family.
Rivermont International Week

Wednesday: Souvenir Day
Bring a souvenir to share with your class (Lower School) or to display on a table in Becherer Hall (Middle & Upper School).
Thursday: Hat / T-Shirt Day
I bet you can figure this one out!
Friday: Costume Day

The entire school will be participating in Zumba dance led by Rivermont parent Bettinna Bolger on Monday morning.  Be sure to wear comfy clothes and plan to get sweaty!
 International Food Fest Collage
International Food Festival
Friday, 3/2 - 3:30 p.m. - Becherer Hall
Each year, we end International Week with the International Food Festival!  Every family is asked to bring a dish that serves 24 bite-sized servings.  The dish may be from any country, but you might want to chose a country that is connected to your family and cook it with your children - what a great learning experience!

It is important that we have a list of what we will be serving!  Please email Parents' Council Co-President Lori Moran at lorilmoran@mchsi.com with:
- the name of your dish
- the country of origin
- a list of ingredients

In addition, the International Food Festival will feature our very own Spanish teacher Leticia Fernandez Merino as the "Celebrity Chef" - Leticia will be preparing items for sampling beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.  At 4:30 p.m., Ellis Kell will be taking the stage to inform and perform!  Ellis Kell is Director of Programming & Community Outreach at River Music Experience and is the guitar & vocals portion of the Ellis Kell Band, a folk/blues band who have shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Bo Diddley, and Etta James!  His program will trace the migration of our American roots and music traditions from the south to the north and beyond.

Rivermont Solo & Ensemble Festival
Monday, 2/27 - 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Soloists and ensembles will perform for a qualified judge and receive a written evaluation, as well as a ribbon, to indicate their score.  Performance is required and is a part of the grade for 3rd quarter (MS Choir & US Show Choir, MS & US Strings, MS & US Band, and select LS string and band students).  A performance schedule was emailed to parents on Wednesday.
 Music Notes Image
Students should report to Becherer Hall to check in and pay the $5 registration fee before going to their assigned performance center.  Cash or checks (payable to Rivermont Collegiate) are acceptable.  Each student should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to their scheduled performance.  They may leave when they are finished.

Students and family members who are on campus through the supper hour may purchase a meal ticket for $3 good for 2 slices of pizza and a beverage, which will be served from 5:30-6:00 p.m.  The dress code is field trip attire, as described on page 26 of the 2011-12 Student-Parent Handbook.  Music faculty will award ribbons and share judges' comments in class later in the week.  There will NOT be an award ceremony at the end of the evening.
