Dear Rivermont Community,

Academic Fair is history.  It's hard to believe that after all the time and work it could be over so quickly.  What is unmistakable is that the students have once again pulled out all the stops and developed amazing projects.  Talking with students, it was evident that each one was proud to show what he has done and share something she has learned.  Students viewed the projects during the day on Thursday and it was fun to listen in on their comments.  Making sure friends noticed their favorite projects, telling stories about visiting places, and of course, making plans for next year's masterworks.  Students used high tech, low tech, and even no tech to present their research.  Stories were told, displays were built, and hypotheses were tested - all to better understand and share.  The Academic Fair is a terrific opportunity to witness the depth and breadth of Rivermont interests and talents.

Last night I shared a weather report about to hit Rivermont.  The March Freeze is on until March 30 and this freeze should warm you up.  Recognizing the investment each family makes in providing a Rivermont education for their children, and appreciating that commitment, the Board of Trustees has approved The March Freeze.  Current students who re-enroll by March 30, 2012 will be charged the 2011-12 tuition for the grade they are entering.  Students receiving financial aid must have all necessary financial aid documents submitted to the Business Office no later than March 30, 2012 to be eligible for The March Freeze.  All re-enrollment agreements returned after March 30, 2012 will be charged the 2012-13 tuition rates.  The March Freeze replaces any and all early enrollment plans previously offered by Rivermont Collegiate.

The March re-enrollment period gives current families an opportunity to reserve a place for their son or daughter for the 2012-13 school year before new students applying for admission are accepted.  By reserving a space for your child, the School has a better understanding of its staffing needs for the upcoming year.  Also, the School is then able to determine how many qualified applicants can be admitted.  We have had waiting pools for the past three years in selected grades due to demand.  Re-enrollment agreements will be mailed March 1 and need to be returned no later than March 30 to reserve a spot for your child, and enjoy The March Freeze.  On March 31, new acceptances will be mailed for any spots not reserved.  We appreciate your commitment to Rivermont and The March Freeze is one way to manage costs.

I am sorry to announce that Brittany Marietta will be leaving Rivermont at the end of this month.  Brittany has been a true asset to the School and has worked creatively and tirelessly to promote the School, its programs, and its mission.  From posters to press releases, tours and community events, she has showcased the exceptional work of our students and faculty.  As my administrative assistant and most recently in Admissions & Marketing Brittany has demonstrated that she has the heart of a Lion.  Many thanks!

I am pleased to announce that Rachel Chamberlain has accepted our offer to become Rivermont's Director of Admissions and Marketing effective immediately.  Rachel holds a degree in marketing from Bradley University and has considerable experience in advertising, business, technology, and education.  This fall she was our volunteer inaugural Robotics coach.  Her talents, skills, experience, and enthusiasm will enhance Rivermont's goals to reach the broader Quad City community.  Rachel has two sons at Rivermont, Ben in third grade and Adam in fifth grade.  We welcome Rachel to the School's administration!

Please remember that we are hosting a special parent workshop with Jim Bisenius, Bully-Proofing Youth, on Monday, March 5 at 6:00 PM.  A light supper will be served from 5:15-5:55 PM.  Although this is an adult evening, you are welcome to invite friends, neighbors, and colleagues.  It is important for at least one parent from each family to attend.

15 school days until Spring Break!

 Kudos!
Congratulations to ninth grader Michal Porubcin who won first place in the Eastern Iowa Brain Bee, a state level competition of the National Brain Bee!
Brain Bee Image
The Brain Bee is a live question and answer competition that tests neuroscience knowledge to determine who has the "best brain" on topics such as intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep, addiction, Alzheimer's, and stroke.  Directed by founder Dr. Norbert Myslinski of the University of Maryland, the Brain Bee is designed to motivate students to learn about the brain, to capture their imaginations, and to inspire them to pursue careers in biomedical brain research.

The winner of each Local Bee is invited to attend the National Brain Bee in March, and the winner of each National Brain Bee is invited to compete in the International Brain Bee Championship.  Michal now has the opportunity to travel to Maryland to compete in the national competition.

Way to go, Michal - we are rooting for you!
Rivermont Participates in Local Student Council Exchange
Student Council Image
On Monday, six Rivermont Upper School Student Council members participated in a Student Council Exchange at the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency.  More than 50 students and advisors from Assumption, Moline, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley, Wittenmeyer Learning Center, and United Township attended the exchange.  Rivermont attendees include Christine Mbakwe, Matt Newsome, Darsani Reddy, Shravya Pothula, Adam Dada, and Lolly Telleen.

During the Student Council Exchange, students and advisors participated in mingling games, team building and project planning activities, and reflection.  It was a fantastic opportunity for area student councils to learn from and share with one another.  With what was learned at the exchange, Rivermont Upper School StuCo hopes to even better serve students, families, and the entire Rivermont Community in the future!
Next Week: Pancake Tuesday!
Pancakes
Pancake Tuesday is a long standing tradition at Rivermont in honor of "Fat Tuesday" and Mardi Gras, which mark the end of a season of excess before the lean days of Lent.  For many years, a pancake luncheon was served on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) to students and staff.

Parent volunteers will be cooking and serving the traditional pancake lunch for students and staff on Tuesday.  Be sure to ask your student about what they found inside (or with) their pancakes!  As always, sack lunches are also okay.

Discover the difference!  Current 8th grade students and their families are invited to join us to learn more about Upper School (Grades 9-12) at Rivermont.  Headmaster Rick St. Laurent and Upper School Faculty will discuss academic expectations and curriculum, extra-curricular activities and athletics, college counseling, and more.

Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to explore what makes Upper School at Rivermont unique!

This event is open to the community!  The friend from swim team who always asks about Rivermont...the colleague who expressed concern about their child's high school...the new neighbor who asked about schools in the area - tell them to join us!

If You Love History

If you enjoy American history, please consider celebrating George Washington's birthday by viewing a 1 hour documentary on Iowa Public Television called The Washingtons of Sulgrave Manor--Immigrants to the New World.  This film was written, directed and produced by Iowa film maker Ken Winber of Des Moines.  The documentary describes the rise of George's ancestors from the servant class to successful merchants in the era of King Henry VIII, the development of their manor house Sulgrave near Banbury, and the reasons which led the great-grandfather of George to venture into the American Colonies.
