Dear Rivermont Community,

The Quad Cities enjoys a quality of life that provides its residents with opportunities and amenities found in large metropolitan communities while maintaining a familiar and close-knit climate. Employment includes high tech and low tech, service and professional, industrial and creative opportunities. Shopping, dining, culture, and leisure are five star and all star. Quad Citians also enjoy diversity in educational options. The higher education landscape offers first class public, private, and medical institutions with many additional options in close proximity. On the elementary and secondary front, parents can choose public, parochial, secular, home, virtual, and independent schools that each provide a particular approach to learning and set students on paths for success and involvement in their communities.

Rivermont has been part of this landscape for 128 years, guiding students from all walks of life to maximize their talents and find their passion. Our alums are artists, physicians, researchers, lawyers, teachers, entrepreneurs, community leaders, spiritual leaders, builders, and thinkers who make their communities stronger and raise principled and eager children. This has been possible first and foremost due to Rivermont's commitment to providing a small learning environment that fosters curiosity and active participation. Rivermont is noted for its dedication to providing rigorous instruction in core subjects guided by teachers who inspire students to go beyond even their own goals. The School makes it difficult for students to hide from challenge or lose themselves in the shuffle. The small learning environment allows teachers to monitor subtle indicators of performance like facial expressions, lapses in attention, or a willingness to volunteer responses for some questions but not for others. Quality feedback and timely challenge and support are the norm. Rivermont teachers have flexibility in choosing curricula and materials that address the diverse needs and interests of their students. In this environment, students of average ability learn more and study more than they normally would, while students with particular aptitudes can explore deeper topics.

We're proud to live in a community that, like Rivermont, is small but offers only the best! And like the Quad Cities, at Rivermont there are always new things to discover! You're already aware of what happens in your child's grade but have you explored the exciting things happening in other grades? Do it!

Have a great weekend,

Rick St. Laurent

Headmaster

P.S.  Bring a friend to Academic Fair and show them what Rivermont does!

 Kudos!
Senior Pavane Gorrepati has been named a Distinguished Finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for her impressive community service activities!

Pavane created a nonprofit organization called Warning about Warming (WaW) to education young people about environmental issues.  Her work has included speaking at rallies and conferences, traveling to India to teach students about sustainable practices, and persuading the Rivermont Board of Trustees to initiate a "no-idling" policy for parents dropping off and picking up students.  The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service.
Pavane Gorrepati - Lab Research
Pavane has done extensive research on alternative energy and global climate change.  She is the author of A Buzzy Bee Tale, a children's book about climate change and Founder and President of the Rivermont Environmental Club.  Pavane was a Grand Champion at the 2010 Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair for her project, "Warning about Warming: A Global Problem with a Fuel Cell Solution," and presented projects at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in both 2009 and 2010.  In addition, Pavane was the winner of the Environmental Hall of Fame Award and 2nd Place Award Winner in the Senior High Energy & Transportation Category at the 2010 State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa.
Student Reporters: Interviews with Faculty!

Mrs. Schroeder
Who: Mrs. Schroeder, 5th Grade Teacher
Student Reporters: Rose Moran & Lana Meier (6th grade)
Mrs. Schroeder is the beloved fifth grade teacher who has been teaching at Rivermont  for nine years.  Here is the scoop on Mrs. Schroeder!
What do you do in your free time?
I like listening to music, watching sports, and reading history books.  I also like teaching sports.
What did you like to do when you attended Rivermont as a student?
I loved basketball, history, band, and acting.
Why do you like about teaching at Rivermont?
When I see students go above and beyond in National History Day, the Academic Fair, and in sports.  My favorite Rivermont event is Imp-Tiger Day.  I'm always here - I like to be here!
 Mrs. Brown-Knupp & Mrs. Skillin
Who: Mrs. Skillin & Mrs. Knupp/Brown, Junior Kindergarten Co-Teachers
Student Reporter: Sam Knupp (6th grade)
Is it hard to maintain order in a classroom of students this age?
Skillin: It's busy, so excitement and noise are a part of Junior Kindergarten!  We plan good activities and keep everyone interested to avoid behavior issues.
Knupp/Brown: In Early School, our friends are learning how to make good choices.  We hope they take that to their next grade level.
How do you feel about your job?
Skillin: I love this job - working with the youngest students and learning what excites them.
Knupp/Brown: I like getting new books that students enjoy reading (Mrs. Knupp/Brown is also the Media Center Specialist!) and I love the Imp-Tiger Day tradition.
What was your favorite subject in school?
Skillin: Math, sports (especially swimming), and band.
Knupp/Brown: English and writing.  I wrote for the school newspaper.  I also liked figure skating and watching boys' basketball, because they always went to state and my senior year we won!
 Hampton
Who: Mrs.  Hampton, Middle & Upper School Science Teacher
Student Reporter: Sam Knupp (6th grade)
What is your favorite thing about teaching at Rivermont?
Small classes with smart, inquisitive kids.
What other schools have you taught at?  How were they different from Rivermont?
I taught at Pekin Middle School for 10 years.  They were different because the classes were bigger and I didn't get to know the kids as well.
Do you have a favorite memory of teaching?
When a student didn't understand a concept, then as it clicks, he/she goes "Ohhhhh."
What is your favorite tradition or special event at Rivermont?
Academic Fair and State Science Fair.  Also Imp-Tiger Day.
What do you do in your free time?
Spend time at the family cabin, fish, and enjoy my grandchildren!
What was your favorite subject and activities in school?
Math, watching football, and participating in plays.
