Student Reporters
Students in grades 6-12 report on Rivermont events and happenings as part of a Student Reporter Mini Course.  They've been busy!

What: Environmental Club Pine Cone Bird Feeder Project
Reporter: Aviana Zahara, 6th Grade
The Rivermont Environmental Club sponsored "Make a Pine Cone Bird Feeder" this week for Middle School (6th-8th) students.  Students used pine cones, bird seed, and peanut butter to make feeders for the birds of winter who need extra calories in the cold winter months.  They then hung them around the Rivermont campus.
"It was fun, except we ran out of peanut butter!" - Marta Storl-Desmond, 8th Grade
"It was freezing, but it was fun!" - Sam Knupp, 6th Grade
"I came to protect the wildlife and it was worth the cold!" - Isabella Holland, 6th Grade
"It was an amazing adventure!" - Keenan Dolan, 6th Grade

What: Great Central U.S. Shakeout
Reporter: Rose Moran, 6th Grade
Every year, earthquakes shake our home planet Earth.  So what do you do when this happens?  How do we educate students on how to stay safe?  Here is reporter Rose Moran with all the answers!
Great Central US Shakeout Logo
What exactly is the Great Central U.S. Shakeout?  This is an earthquake drill that takes place all across schools in the Midwest.  It is used to educate students on exactly what to do if an earthquake were to strike.

When does the drill take place?  Rivermont will be prepared for the Great Central U.S. Shakeout on Tuesday, February 7th at 10:15 a.m.

Why does Rivermont participate in this drill?  Since most of the Midwest is close to the New Madrid fault line and more and more tremors have been shaking the Midwest and West Coast, schools have decided that it is past time to educate students on earthquake safety.

I asked Mrs. Johnson what to do during this drill.  When the alarm sounds, you must "Drop, cover, and hold on."  If you're in a classroom, get on the ground, crawl to a desk, and grab onto the legs.  In an earthquake, glass can shatter, furniture can slide, and debris can fall.  Make sure you take the necessary precautions to prevent these things from happening.  Stay safe and always be prepared!  Until next time, this is Student Report Rose Moran.

Stanford University Logo
Congratulations are in order to senior Pavane Gorrepati, who received a "tribute to extraordinary achievements as a student and scholar" in the form of an Early Approval from Stanford University.  The Early Approval offer assures Pavane a place in the Fall 2012 entering freshman class at Stanford.  Says Stanford: "Pavane, you are among a very small group of applicants who will be receiving this early notification of their admission to Stanford." and "Your application clearly showed that you have the intellectual energy, imagination, and talent to flourish" at Stanford.  As Pavane and other seniors wait for regular decision acceptances, Stanford clearly wants to get its foot in the door early for this talented Rivermont senior!  Congratulations, Pavane!
Grad CapGood luck and congratulations to senior
Christine Mbkawewho is one of only 1,300 students nationally who advanced to the Finalist Standing in the 2012 National Merit Achievement Scholarship Program, a competition for Black American high school students.  Entrance to the program is based on high scores on the Fall 2011 PSAT Exam.  About 800 students will win a National Achievement Scholarship.  We are rooting for you, Christine!
