Mission Statement

Dear Rivermont Community,
Participation in a wide variety of course offerings, support in making informed choices, and preparing for the opportunities of the 21st century are hallmarks of a Rivermont education.
Beginning in Early School, children are encouraged to speak in front of an audience. Whether it is Circle Time, Morning Meeting, Living Biographies, Junior Service Learning, or classroom presentations, Rivermont provides many opportunities for students to develop poise, self-confidence, and public speaking skills.
Academic Fair projects in Grades 2-11 expose students to research and presentation skills while they explore history, service, and scientific inquiry. Independent study options in the Upper School encourage students to pursue academic and artistic tracks that deepen their knowledge and demonstrate initiative. Students have worked with faculty to develop studies in women's literature, the Middle East, public health, piano, architecture, and web design. Students of all ages interact in academic and community building activities, learning from each other and building ties across grades and school divisions. Reading Buddies, O.L.E. Day, Imp-Tiger Days, BizTown, Robotics, and Upper School Outdoor Learning promote peer connections and problem solving that serve students for years to come. Small classes enable teachers to know each student and provide both the support and challenge to empower students to become independent learners.
As a PS-12 school, we follow a student's growth and development and customize their experience by promoting activities that broaden understanding and introducing opportunities that deepen knowledge and skills. The Upper School is the capstone of the Rivermont Experience. The rigorous academic program concentrates on the development of the ability to reason, reach independent conclusions, and apply knowledge and skills learned in one discipline to another. The traditional 3 R's are expanded to encourage and foster risk, rigor, respect, responsibility, and resilience.
Individualized college counseling helps each student maximize their experience at Rivermont. Students research college options to understand the wealth of opportunities that exist and make informed choices as they seek the right fit for college. From beginning to end, our curriculum is reading and writing intensive. At each level, students are taught to learn together yet think independently, express themselves with clarity and confidence, and appreciate the importance of all the academic disciplines.
Rivermont students are active participants in their own learning!
Sincerely,
Rick St. Laurent
Headmaster

Happening Around Campus...
Students in grades 6-12 report on Rivermont events and happenings as part of a Student Reporter Mini Course. They've been busy!
What: National History Day Competition
Reporter: Bhavana Purighalla, 7th grade
Bhavana visited Mrs. Schroeder's classroom to check in on students preparing for the National History Day Competition. Students are preparing for the district competition, to be held March 5th at St. Ambrose University. Manasa Pagadala, Shivani Ganesh, and Emilia Porubcin (all 7th grade) are working on a project on Marie Curie.
"It's fun!" - Shivani Ganesh
"It's a fun learning experience!" - Gwyn Vollman
What: Rivermont Yearbook 2011-12
Reporters: Lana Meier & Emily Goodman, 6th grade
The Yearbook Committee meets twice per week in the Mansion Computer Lab. They anticipate the 2011-12 Yearbook will be completed by Spring Break.
"The Yearbook Committee is always late on deadlines!" - Mr. Douglas
"It's fun to make all the different pages!" - Shravya Pothula
What: Homecoming Pep Rally
Reporter: Rose Moran, 6th grade
Rose Moran got the inside scoop on why the cheerleaders were so excited to perform at last Friday's Homecoming Pep Rally. Lana Meier, 6th grade, started Rivermont cheerleading because she thought it looked like fun and she has been dancing since she was 4 years old. Lolly Telleen, 9th grade, says the Pep Rally gives cheerleaders a chance to "show off their moves" and do stunts they have been working hard on. Rose reports that Lolly knows all the cheers and walks into practice with a smile on her face, ready to get down to it!
"It's a good way to show your Lion Spirit." - Gia Eckhardt
"I have always wanted to be a cheerleader and I love dancing." - Lolly Telleen

KUDOS!
A round of applause to Rivermont 6th grader Robbie McVey and his FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team, the Radioactive Robots, who brought home a second place trophy in Presentation Research at the FLL State Championship held last weekend at Iowa State University!
When the team was asked by the press where they learned to research projects well, Robbie answered 4-5 times "I don't know about everyone else, but we research everything on our own at Rivermont." Congrats to Robbie and the Radioactive Robots!

The Changing Face of College Applications
"The Common Application set a record on January 1, crossing the 2 million application mark earlier than ever. December 31 was once again the busiest day of the year, during which the online system processed nearly 4 submissions per second. As of January 15, nearly 300,000 counselors and teachers had submitted 5.8 million school forms. That's 5.8 million documents that were never printed, posted, mailed, opened, sorted, or filed by hand. Four years ago at this time the Common Application online system did not exist." - The Common Application January 2012 School Officials Update
The Common Application allows a student to apply to up to 20 cooperating schools with one application. There are 456 Common Application members in 46 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in France, Germany, Italy, Scotland, and Switzerland. Members range from Ivies such as Brown University, RI to liberal arts colleges such as Grinnell, IA and large universities such as the University of Michigan, MI. Each year, more members join the Common Application, and furthermore, 146 schools are "exclusive members" who accept only the Common Application; these schools include Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Members of the Class of 2012 each used the Common Application for some (or all) of their applications. Juniors will have a workshop on the Common Application this spring as part of Rivermont College Counseling.
