Dear Rivermmonty in snowont Community,

The snow is finally here!  Although the warmer days were quite nice it is mid-January in Iowa after all.  With what appears to be the actual beginning of winter it is good to refresh our memories about snow procedures at Rivermont.

Rivermont students come from 16 different communities in Iowa and Illinois.  The weather conditions in these communities can vary greatly therefore the conditions in Bettendorf are used to determine if school is open or closed.  Each family is encouraged to make their own decision about conditions in their area and the safety of traveling to school.  When possible, (and safe) Rivermont will be open.  We rarely call for a late start to school. It is also important to note that Rivermont will only dismiss school early when the conditions in Bettendorf are unsafe.  Again, each family is encouraged to make their own decision about travel safety when the weather gets bad.  You need only call the School and advise us that you will be picking up your child early, or just come over.  We understand that bad weather affects each of us differently and we support individual family decisions.

School closings are communicated in the following ways:

  1.  The School website runs a message ticker.  www.rvmt.org
  2. The School automated attendant announces that Rivermont is closed.  (563) 359-1366
  3. An email blast is sent to all Rivermont Families.  This distribution list includes all parent/guardian email addresses provided to the School.  Please be sure that we have your current email address.
  4. Local television and radio media are alerted and run the information on air and on their individual websites.  This can be cumbersome when many schools close so we advise you check our website.  Watch:  KWQC-TV6, WQAD-TV8, WHBF-TV4, KLJB-TV18.  Listen to:  WOC-AM 1420, WLLR-FM 103.7, KCQQ-FM 106.5, KUUL-FM 101.3, KMXG-FM 96.1, KBOB-FM, KORB-FM 93.5, KQL1-FM, WXLP-FM 97, KJOC-AM 1170.

PLEASE DRESS FOR THE WEATHER!

Our PreSchool and Junior Kindergarten friends need:  winter coat, snow pants, hat, gloves or mittens, and boots.

Kindergarten through Grade 5 need: winter coat, snow pants, hat, gloves or mittens, and boots (as well as a pair of shoes for indoor wear).  It is also not a bad idea to have an extra pair of socks and even pants to change into in case they get wet.  Students not appropriately dressed for the weather will have quiet recess in Central Hall with Ms. Burrell.

Middle and Upper School students should have appropriate footwear and outwear to walk between buildings for class.  It would be nice to avoid unnecessary slips and chills.

SHOES THAT FIT results!  I am delighted to report that Rivermont collected over 80 pairs of new shoes and purchased 24 coats and 23 pairs of boots.  These items were distributed to 4 schools. We received a wonderful thank you letter from one of the schools with each of the children signing the letter.  KUDOS to Rivermont students and parents for spreading cheer and goodwill in the QC community.

Mark your calendars!  On Monday March 5, Rivermont will host therapist Jim Bisenius who will conduct workshops for students, faculty, and parents on Bully-Proofing Youth.  Bully-Proofing Youth is a practical and effective bullying prevention program designed for children grades 1-12.  It teaches students what kids who target look for in those they pick on and how to stop giving those reactions. Through assemblies, workshops, and group trainings, therapist Jim Bisenius instructs students, teachers, and parents in ways to eliminate bullying behavior.  Jim's presentations are delivered in an extremely entertaining and interactive manner using humor, drawings, story-telling, and role-playing.  More details to follow.

Hope to see many of you at tomorrow's Homecoming Basketball Games.  Girls will play at 2:00 PM and Boys at 3:30 PM.  Your Varsity Teams need you to cheer them on as they take on the Quad City Christian Eagles!

Keep warm,

Rivermont Student Speaks Up at Caucus!

While attending a caucus in LeClaire, Rivermont sixth grade student Collin Smith stood to speak for Rick Santorum.  "When they called for people to speak for Rick Santorum, I thought an adult would go up there with a prepared speech or notes.  But when nobody went up, I stood up and said I would."  Collin reports that he has always been interested in politics and has seen many of the candidates during their visits to Iowa, as well as attending the straw poll in August, and has watched many of the debates and spent time understanding viewpoints.
 Patriotic Image
Collin didn't have anything prepared to speak at the caucus, but spoke from what he believes.  When he spoke Tuesday night, he explained that every candidate he was able to meet, he asked a question, and that Santorum was the only one who looked him in the eye and gave him real answers as if he wasn't a kid, and that he liked Santorum's answer the best.  Collin was mentioned on Chicago's NBC station website, as well as in the Opinion section of the Quad City Times - see the links below!

No matter where you stand on candidates and politics, it simply can't be argued that at Rivermont we truly are participants!

Ross' Ties to Iowa Politics Featured on Dutch TV
Ross' Restaurant in Bettendorf drew a visit by a Dutch television crew for a Magic Mountain and some political insight during the Iowa caucuses!  The Dutch television news magazine "EenVandaag," or "One Today," contacted the restaurant asking if a crew could come to the restaurant.  Melissa Freidhof-Rodgers, general manager of the restaurant owned by her parents Cynthia and Ron Freidhof (and mother of Rivermont fifth grader Sylvia Freidhof-Cruz), said people from the show had read about Ross' in a New York Times story about President Obama's visit in June.  Freidhof-Rodgers said the restaurant is a popular spot for campaigning politicians, most recently pre-caucus visits from 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.  "We're kind of the quintessential Midwestern diner," she said.  Reporter Henk van der Aa interviewed the Freidhof family and several Ross' customers about their political views for a segment that has aired on Dutch television.

In an email to the Quad City  Times, van der Aa wrote that he found it remarkable that Iowans are so used to seeing their political leaders that they seem to take it for granted.  "For Dutch people, the American president is almost larger-than-life, not somebody who can just hop in and have a Magic Mountain with you," he said.  "Iowans have the chance to build personal relationships with the candidates, and this is truly unique.  I loved being able to tell this story."
Cynthia Ross-Freidhof gets a hug from President Obama when he made a surprise visit to Ross' Restaurant in June en route to speak to workers at the Alcoa Davenport Works.

Science in Rivermont PreSchool!
On Tuesday, Kara Fedje from the Putnam Museum visited the PreSchool classroom to teach students about kitchen chemistry.  PreSchool students used household materials (including milk, food coloring, baking powder, lemon juice, and more) to make magic milk, a volcano explosion, a lava lamp, and play dough!

Live Healthy Iowa Kids Logo
Live Healthy Iowa is a health initiative that brings Iowans together in team-based wellness challenges to promote positive lifestyle change.

Beginning in 2002 as a way to combat Iowa's growing obesity problem, Live Healthy Iowa evolved into multiple wellness challenges that provide tools to make strides toward the goal of making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.

Rivermont Collegiate would like to show how we live healthy by participating in the Live Healthy Iowa Kids Governor's Challenge.  We may register a team or teams of 5-30 participants in any grade who will track physical activity and nutrition intake for the challenge period, which is January 17 through April 25 (100 days).

The goal of each team member is a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity, 5 days per week, which is the CDC's recommendation.  Members would report to me their minutes each week.  P.E. class and active recess time are definitely eligible!  The nutrition aspect includes a focus on intake of fruits, vegetables, milk/water, and also screen time.  We will have a large wall chart on which we'll track our progress and get inspiration.

Teams who meet their goals are eligible to  receive incentives and cash prizes for Rivermont!

Team members will be encouraged to be active within their own comfort level.  The goal is to help each team member strive for and recognize gains in his or her fitness level and make healthy eating choices.

Students may indicate their interest to me in person, but if he or she is Middle School or younger, a parent contact email would be appreciated.

Please respond to Shalar Knupp at brown@rvmt.org.

Thank you for helping us stay active this winter and spring!

There is NO SCHOOL Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

MLK Jr Memorial

"If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective." (24 December 1967, Atlanta, GA)

Martin Luther King, Jr.

(January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. King has become a national icon in the history of modern American liberalism.

A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he expanded American values to include the vision of a color blind society, and established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and stopping the Vietnam War.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986.
