Bittersweet News
It is with a mixture of sadness and pride that we announce Drew Boster, Director of Development, is resigning his position effective January 1st. Drew has done much to advance Rivermont's fundraising efforts, particularly in the area of our endowment and alumni outreach. His expertise in higher education fundraising has helped us develop stronger strategies as we move forward.
It is with sadness that we take different paths, as Drew has been given the exciting opportunity and honor to join Life University as Vice President for Advancement. Life University has campuses in Atlanta and San Francisco. The entire Rivermont Community thanks Drew for all he has done for Rivermont and wishes him the best! We are currently exploring opportunities to cover this administrative position.

Rivermont Robotics Success!
Congratulations to the 5th graders (and one 6th grader!) for their outstanding performance at the First Lego League robotics competition on Saturday! Our two teams spent months preparing for this big event and it all paid off.
Team Technical Difficulties broke their previous record with a whopping 100 point score in the robot game and wowed the judges in the technical interview with their unique robot attachments and use of the light sensor. For their research projects, this team invented a new milk machine to be used in restaurants. The new "Milky Way Milk Machine" has thermometers inside each milk bag and lights on the top of the machine to notify restaurant employees when the milk has gone bad. Their presentation even included a pre-recorded commercial for the invention.

Team Masterminds impressed everyone around them by switching their mission line-up seamlessly during each robot round and had everyone holding their breath when they achieved the most difficult mission with a full second to spare. Mastermind's invention was a paper towel cover for use in restaurants. Restaurant employees can roll a new sheet of paper on top of and underneath the table before each customer to reduce contamination risk. Their presentation included a skit with a pre-recorded dream...very creative!
A small handful of the 35 teams at the tournament won an award. We are extremely proud of Team Masterminds for winning the Core Values Inspiration Award. The head judge for the event explained, "Core Values are at the heart of everything FLL teams do throughout the season. Students work as a team in the spirit of friendly competition to have fun and learn throughout the entire season. FLL teams understand what they discover is far more important than what they win. This award celebrates a team that is empowered by their First Lego League experience and displays extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit."

Team coaches, Mrs. Chamberlain and Mrs. Schroeder, are very proud of the students and have seen tremendous growth and maturity in all of them. In addition to learning new skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), these students demonstrated real life skills such as teamwork, goal setting, cooperation, compromise, hard work, respect, responsibility, and problem solving. It will be exciting to see what these teams do next year!
Congratulations also goes to 6th grade student Robbie McVey, a member of the Radioactive Robots team from Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Robbie's team won 2nd place overall in the Champions Award category. Radioactive Robots will be advancing to the state competition at Iowa State University on January 14.
A special thank you to Ross' Restaurant, Rockwell Collins, and the 5th grade families for their sponsorship and support. More photos and video clips can be found at www.RivermontRobotics.com
Kudos to our students and coaches for exemplifying the pillars of Rivermont's mission - Intellect, Character, and Creativity! We are RIVERMONT!

A "Lovely" Achievement!
Rivermont seniors Christine Mbakwe and Joann Weeks were both finalists in the youth division of the Bettendorf Public Library's Love Poetry Contest, with Christine taking first place.
The contest was open to anyone within a 50-mile radius of the Quad Cities who had not won first place in one of the library's previous contests - there were almost 150 entries. Rivermont faculty member Gwen Livingstone Pokora was one of the judges who helped winnow the entries to 10 each in adult and youth divisions. These 20 poems were sent to New York City poet Jean Valentine for final judging.
Christine Mbakwe took first place in the youth division with her poem "Love's Pistol". Joann Weeks was a finalist in the youth division with her poem "My Nephew, Jackson". Winners of the contest with be featured with Jean Valentine at a program of words, music, art, and heart-shaped cookies at the Bettendorf Public Library on Thursday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m.
