Dear Rivermont Community,
Wednesday afternoon I received a text that a former colleague had passed away. Soon, one text became several and Facebook posts reunited former students, current students, colleagues, parents, friends, and family sharing their feelings and memories. Reading the posts was bittersweet - all were sad at our friend's passing but at the same time fond, happy memories were shared and treasured. It is remarkable that in a few minutes, posts can be shared the world over. Japan, Korea, South Africa, Australia, France, England, Germany, and the U.S. were connected in a matter of minutes reminding us just how powerful school ties and memories are.
Rivermont is the tenth school community I've joined and I must say that the independent schools among them have generated the most enduring and heartfelt connections. Schools like Rivermont encourage and sustain relationships that continue long after the familiar day to day interactions cease. That is not to say that such connections do not occur in other schools, they most certainly do. The difference, however, is that the percentage of those involved is significantly higher. Relationships are not reserved to those in the same class or same team but everyone seems to have a connection.
As I read the posts of former students who are now parents themselves, it strikes me how personally connected they still feel to their school, their classmates, and their teachers. Surely social media has much to do with intensifying these connections. But one has only to observe people gathered together for that old fashioned face-to-face chat to see that the connection is immediately rekindled almost as if no time had passed!
So as I reminisce with former colleagues, students, and parents about our colleague, I know that our students, staff, and parents are building those same kinds of relationships that will connect them to an extraordinary community for years to come!
Sincerely, Rick St. Laurent Headmaster |

Kudos!
Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, encouraging young people to express their visions of peace. During the last 20 years, more than four million children from nearly 100 countries have participated. The local competition was sponsored by the Bettendorf Lions Club.
Sixth grader Emily Goodman has been honored with third place in the local competition! Emily and 2 other local students will be honored at the Bettendorf Lions Club meeting in January. Dylan Canas, a seventh grader at Bettendorf Middle School, was honored with first place and will advance to district and international rounds of competition. Second place was awarded to Veronica Henderson. All three students take lessons at Mrs. B's School of Art in Bettendorf.

Don't forget! Red Wheel Fundraiser Delivery
Items purchased from the Red Wheel Fundraiser will be delivered to Rivermont for pick-up on Thursday, 12/8 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Items MUST be picked up by the student who sold them and that student will deliver items to their customers. Because most items are frozen, it is important students pick them up Thursday - Rivermont doesn't have freezer space to store them!

From the College Corner
FAFSA Follow Up
Once again, the experts from ICAN (Iowa College Access Network) presented a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) workshop in November for both Rivermont families and the greater Quad City community. I have extra "Financial Aid Guide" booklets and draft 2012-13 FAFSA worksheets available in the Mansion Reading Room. Working with the draft enables you to be ready to submit after the FAFSA opens for application on January 1, 2012.
Tips to remember:
1. The official site is www.fafsa.gov - the .gov is important because any other extension will direct you to a scam site asking for money to complete the FAFSA. The FAFSA is always free.
2. Beginning in February for the 2012-13 FAFSA, applicants may access their IRS tax information and have it automatically inserted into the FAFSA. A great time saver!
PLAN Test Results
PLAN test results for sophomores arrived and students poured over results along with the projected ACT test score ranges. Although the PLAN is given in the fall of the sophomore year, it offers a projection for the ACT which Rivermont requires in the spring of the junior year. This was a good time to point out that while the estimated ACT scores are based on national projections, Rivermont Collegiate students historically and routinely meet the highest projection or exceed the projection when students take the ACT in the spring of the following year.
Why do Rivermont students do better? Individual follow up, analysis of weaknesses, guidance in test taking and pacing, junior year ACT/SAT test preparation offerings, and most of all - CARING - students who care and teachers who care. The desire to do better produces better results!

From the Admission Office
Why are your children at Rivermont?
Education will continue to be a hot topic in local and national political circles and at the family dinner table for years to come. When the topic of education comes up, what do you contribute to the conversation? What do you feel strongly about? What motivated you to explore Rivermont and enroll?
A 2011 survey from the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) revealed that even when parents have differing opinions on independent education, they are unified in their preference for sources of information. 79% of parents reported family, friends, and neighbors as a preferred source of information about schools. This comes as no surprise at Rivermont, where we know how powerful word-of-mouth is in bringing potential families to campus.
The next time the topic of education comes up with your family and friends, I encourage you to share why you enrolled at Rivermont. Challenging curriculum? Nurturing learning environment? Personalized attention and encouragement? Whatever the reason, suggest that they, too, explore their educational options and whether Rivermont is the right fit for their family.
The goals parents have for their children, as well as individual family values, can make one school a better fit for a student than another. Until they explore and experience Rivermont, how will they know?
