Dear Rivermont Community,
We have many things to be thankful for. Our students benefit from caring teachers, supportive parents, encouraging alumni, and a diverse community as they develop their Intellect, Character, and Creativity. Expectations are high, yet Rivermont strives to provide multiple avenues for students to experience both challenge and success. I am particularly thankful for our many supporters who help Rivermont achieve its mission and make it possible for us to raise the bar. Gifts of time, talent, and treasure all combine to make Rivermont the best it can be. I believe the following poem captures the spirit of generosity and responsibility of our Rivermont Community. Like the bridge builder, we build the Rivermont Community not only for those who are here, but for those who are yet to come.
The Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole
An old man going a lone highway, Came, at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim,
The sullen stream had no fear of him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. "Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way; You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build this bridge at evening tide?" The builder lifted his old gray head; "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followed after me to-day A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!"
A happy, safe, and restful Thanksgiving to all!
Rick St. Laurent Headmaster

What Our Students Are Up To...
Lower School Artists Decorate for Festival of Trees
This year, LS students decorated a Children's Tree for the Quad City Arts Festival of Trees. Students used the paper mache technique and recycled materials to create colorful hot air balloon ornaments. Our 4th grade class collaborated to create the tree skirt that represents a map of the Quad Cities during the holiday season. Works of art by Upper School students will also be on display at the 17th Annual Art Exhibit at the Festival of Trees.
5th Grade NAIS 20/20 Challenge News
The 5th grade class was selected for the 5th year running to participate in the NAIS 20/20 Challenge. They received notification in August that they will be leading work on the topic of Peacekeeping, Conflict Prevention, & Combating Terrorism with schools in California and New Zealand.
They just received word this week that NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) would like them to lead another group on the topic of Natural Disaster Prevention & Mitigation with schools in New Jersey and with a middle school in Huizhou, Guangdong, China. Mr. Fee, our Middle School social studies teacher, will be joining the 6th and 7th grade classes into the project so the workload doesn't become too overwhelming.
Only half of schools that apply to the NAIS 20/20 Challenge are fortunate enough to collaborate with other schools on one project, but two is very rare! The leaders of this project like the results that come from Rivermont and our students have developed a great reputation with the schools from around the world that we have worked with in the past. If you know anyone who is an expert in either of these fields, the classes would love to talk with them!

Junior Achievement BizTown Job Interviews
4th and 5th grade students interviewed this morning for job assignments at Junior Achievement BizTown, where they will go in December. Below, Mr. St. Laurent, Mr. Boster, Mrs. Heaney, and Mrs. Chamberlain interview students for a variety of positions - ranging from CEO to Radio DJ!
