Dear Rivermont Community,

Professional development is an important facet of Rivermont's commitment to lifelong learning.  Our students, however, are not the only learners.  Our faculty, administrators and trustees also take on this commitment.  The Independent Schools Association of the Central States, ISACS provides valuable professional development opportunities to Rivermont in addition to accreditation services.  Each year ISACS sponsors a conference for teachers and administrators where ideas, best practices, opportunities and challenges are shared.  This is especially beneficial since the participating schools are like Rivermont -- independent, private schools.  This year's conference theme is Innovation:  Thinking Outside the Box and features a keynote from Guy Kawasaki, formerly from Apple, co-founder of Alltop.com and founding partner of Garage Technology Ventures and author of nine books, his newest being Enchantment:  The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions, was released in March 2011.  Also presenting is Jane McGonigal, PhD, a world-renowned designer of alternate reality games - or, games that are designed to improve real lives and solve real problems.  Gaming might seem contradictory to the intellectual pursuits of a college prep environment but Dr. McGonagal reminded us that the opposite of play is not work, it is depression.  She then proceeded to share some attitude altering insights.

This year, Becca Ashby, Colleen McCarty, Carrie Skillin and Kathy Topalian have joined me in attending this 2-day conference in Detroit.  In addition to the two keynote speakers mentioned several other featured speakers and leaders in independent school education are presenting sessions relevant to all aspects of school.  We have already learned much and we still have another full day to go.  We all look forward to returning to Rivermont with some fresh ideas and perspectives.

Online Resources at Students' Disposal!

online research

Does your student have a country project to complete, need to make a poster about cells, want to watch a video story on butterflies, or need photos for a PowerPoint on the Civil War? Iowa  Area Education Agencies are providing twelve dynamic online resources for grades Preschool through 12  to all Iowa accredited schools. Rivermont students have access at school and at home (Internet access required), 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These online resources give your child access to a wealth of information for assignments, classroom projects, and personal interest and often provides assistance in citing their source for bibliographies as well.

When accessing these online resources, students use information skills of finding, evaluating and using information; technology skills; and literacy skills in reading, analysis, and problem solving. The online resources are important tools for students to use and understand and will provide them with lifelong skills. A brief overview of each of the databases is listed below.

  • AccuWeather (PreK-12) - Local and international weather conditions and forecasts for research, presentations and projects.
  • AP Images (PreK-12) - Over 7 million primary-source photographs from the 1800's
  • up to a minute ago, over 1.9 million sound bites from the 1920's up to a minute ago, 230,000 maps, charts and timelines, and 2.5 million text news stories from The Associated Press.
  • Atomic Learning (PreK-12) - Access to over 50,000 tutorials on 205 technology applications - here is where to go if you have questions about using a computer program.
  • BookFLIX (PreK-3) - An online literacy resource that pairs fictional video storybooks with related nonfiction books. Read-aloud feature provides accessibility to all readers.
  • Vocabulary feature and interactive games extend student learning.
  • Britannica Digital Learning (PreK-12) - A suite of products designed to support student research and classroom instruction, Britannica Digital Learning offers an extensive collection of reference and learning materials that are age-appropriate.
  • CultureGrams (K-12) - An insider's perspective on daily life and culture, including the history, customs, and lifestyles of the world's people. Excellent United States section for 4th grade academic fair projects!
  • Gale - Cengage Learning (PreK-12) - An eResource package offering screened and reliable content from magazines, newspapers, and reference materials. Ten different resources are designed for age-appropriate access.
  • iCLIPART For Schools (PreK-12) - A collection of more than 7.8 million royalty-free photos, clipart, fonts, animations, and sounds that can be used in multimedia presentations, Inspiration diagrams, school websites, worksheets, newsletters, posters, signs, and more.
  • Learn360 (PreK-12) - Educational streaming media offering thousands of full-length digital videos, video clips, images, audio files, newsreels, speeches and a comprehensive library of teaching resources from educational publishers.
  • SIRS Issues Researcher (9-12) - Exploration of the origins, perspectives, and essential questions under debate on over 300 pro/con social issues. Review thousands of  articles, primary sources, statistics, websites, and multimedia.
  • soundzabound (PreK-12) - Licensed audio that can be used without copyright infringement in videos, podcasts, and other forms of multimedia. The MP3 audio files are cross platform for use in any Mac or PC software that incorporates audio. Remember, just because you bought an mp3 does not mean you own the rights to re-publish it!
  • Teen Health & Wellness (7-12) - Provides students with nonjudgmental, straightforward self-help support. Topics include diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, mental health, suicide, bullying, green living, online safety, financial literacy, and more.

Your student can access these online resources at www.iowaaeaonline.org using our school's username and password. I've visited with students from 5th through 12th grade about these databases and they should have the username/password. If your student does not have this information, please email Shalar Brown at brown@rvmt.org and I can provide it for you. Remember, the license for these resources limits use to school related activities. See the included information on copyright for more guidelines regarding the fair use of online information for education: http://www.iowaaeaonline.org/pages/uploaded_files/CopyrightBN_StudentsScreen3.pdf

If your  younger student loves finding information, many of the databases have kid-friendly interfaces for exploring any topic, such as Kid InfoBits in Gale and Britannica Learning Zone. Please encourage your child to use these resources when they are completing their homework and projects. If he is finding facts about a country using Wikipedia you can ask, "Have you tried CultureGrams or Britannica?" If she needs an article about a current event, ask if she's tried Gale. We appreciate your help in redirecting the students away from general internet searches and toward this excellent, free, reliable, and trusted information.

Make Your Yearbook More Personal

The Rivermont Collegiate Yearbook, in association with Jostens, is offering an oppurtunity for parents to place special messages to their children upon completion of the school year. These messages help make the yearbook even more memorable for the students! Parents or other family members are allowed to write anything they wish to their children. The messages have no word limit, so parents may write as much as they desire about their children.

On the link below are examples of messages, sample sizes, required order form, and the prices of the various sizes. Placing a memorable message makes the yearbook more special for your child, and it helps to fund for the school yearbook. You may also place advertisements in the yearbook for businesses and facilities. This year we are offering another oppurtunity in which students may customize the cover of their yearbooks as well. Students are allowed up to two lines for personalization and can put icons as well. An order form for personalization of yearbook covers is also attached.

If you wish to place an advertisement or personalize the yearbook cover, please fill out the required form. Once you have filled out the form, please return it to Mr. Douglas prior to November 30th. Your message will not only make the yearbook more special for your children, but will greatly aid the Rivermont yearbook. If you have any further questions, please contact us at 359-1366 ext. 346.

    Sincerely,
    Shravya Pothula '14

Virtual Art Gallery at Rivermont

Rivermont's Visual Art Program is proud to announce that we are now part of the largest online student art museum, Artsonia! Every student involved in the visual arts at Rivermont will have their artwork published on this online art gallery. Artsonia helps use technology to create a dialogue between students and family members regarding students' artwork. Students and family members will now have the opportunity to view students' newly created artwork, join students' fan clubs, leave feedback about students' artwork, read artist statements, or even purchase a variety of student art imprinted keepsakes from the museum store.  Artsonia donates 15% of revenue from purchases to our schools art program, making it another possible source of financial support for our growing art program. We encourage you to help us share students' artwork with our far-reaching Rivermont community. Parental permission forms will be sent home to parents who still need to create an account on Artsonia so their child's artwork can be published. We have already published over a hundred works of art on Artsonia and we are excited to share even more fabulous art from our creative Rivermont students!

What are the seniors doing?
Seniors who had early deadlines for Honors Programs, Medical Programs, Early Action, Early Decision, or Single Choice Early Action applications have been busy in October to meet those grueling November 1 deadlines!  But now they can relax and eat Halloween candy since they have completed all these early applications.  I know - 5 days to spare!  A big thank you to our English teacher, Mrs. Pokora, who helped each student polish the all-important college essay.

Juniors have been busy also!
Juniors attended a Saturday college essay and application workshop at the Midwest Writing Center in Davenport led by Dane Rowley, Dean of Admissions at Augustana College.  A post workshop feedback session showed all students thought the workshop was very helpful!  Juniors also finished a three page questionnaire designed to help each student select colleges or universities that fit and followed up with an hour long conference with the College Counselor.  They have updated resumes started in sophomore English and started Excel spreadsheets to track all college deadlines and organize information about selected colleges.  Juniors are required to choose a minimum of 6 schools (2 reach, 2 middle, 2 safeties) in at least two regions of the U.S.  Now students will explore these colleges in depth through websites, books, discussions with the College Counselor, and visits.

Three of the top ranked languages used worldwide for business are taught at Rivermont!
A recent Bloomberg survey found that excluding English and for business purposes, Mandarin Chinese ranks as the top language worldwide for business (spoken by 845 million people).  French edged out Spanish and Arabic for second place (French is spoken by 68 million people worldwide and the official language of 27 countries).  Arabic was third (spoken by 221 million people and the official language of 23 nations).  Spanish was fourth (spoken by 329 million people and the official language of 20 countries).

Don't Forget to RSVP for the Upper School Fall Play!

Performances
Friday, 11/4 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, 11/5 - 1:30 and 7:00 p.m.

The Upper School Fall Play, Murder By The Book, will be performed in the 1st floor parlor of the Mansion.  Due to limited seating, please reserve your space by either calling (563) 359-1366 ext. 323 or emailing skaggs@rvmt.org.  When leaving a voicemail or sending an email, please indicate which performance you will be attending.

Please note that because the plot of the play involves a murder, it is not appropriate for young children.
