KUDOS!

Sixth grader Collin Smith organized a fundraiser for an overflow homeless shelter to be opened for homeless women and their children inside King's Harvest outreach center in Davenport.  King's Harvest was counting on the community's generosity in monetary and supply donations and Collin stepped up to the task!

Collin would like to give a big thank you to all students and families who donated and a special thank you to the sixth grade girls who helped with the bake sale, as well as Ms. McCarty and Mrs. Heaney.  Collin's efforts raised $558.69!  Way to go, Collin (and the entire Rivermont Community)!  Collin is shown below presenting the check to Janette Manian, manager of the shelter.

Fifth grader Aislinn Geedey helped celebrate the American Library Association's Banned Books Week by participating in a banned books reading in the Augustana College library on Sept. 20.  Aislinn read an excerpt from "The Egypt Game" by Zilpha Keatley Snyder about children performing rituals for ancient Egyptian gods.  Aislinn was the youngest participant in the event!  Aislinn used a tactic she learned in the third grade at Rivermont by reading a cliff-hanger, then telling the audience they will have to read the book themselves to see how it turns out!  The librarian organizing the event said it was a treat to have a younger-than-college-age person on stage, particularly one so poised and articulate.  The St. Ambrose library, Davenport Public Library, and the Midwest Writing Center also organized events in celebration of Banned Books Week.

Calling All Students! Start Brain Storming!

Each year, Rivermont hosts a dinner and auction to raise money to support the School and students.  To kick things off this fall, students have been asked to help create a theme for the event.  Students should submit their best ideas by Friday, Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m.  Boxes are located at each front desk on campus (Becherer Hall and the Mansion) to submit ideas - please use an official submission form!  The student whose theme is selected will receive $100 in auction money (a certificate to be used the night of the event) and a $100 gift card to Toys R Us or iTunes.  The winner will be announced on Friday, Oct. 14.

NHS Sponsors Hunger Banquet

This Wednesday (Oct. 5) during mini period, Middle and Upper School will be participating in a hunger banquet.  A hunger banquet portrays the lives of billions around the world who live in chronic food insecurity.  Students will draw tickets and be assigned to different income levels based on statistics of the number of people in poverty.  Some may eat a five star meal, while others simply share rice and water.  The experience helps students understand the hardships billions go through and why it is important to help and volunteer.
