Dear Rivermont Community,

You may have noticed some new "staff" on campus this week!  Mr. Pillow had a break on Thursday when young Master Enzo Panozzo took over the reins in the Phys Ed department.  Having previously met to prepare lesson plans, Master Panozzo was dressed for the task in red and white P.E. teacher attire and led classes from Lower School through Upper.  Indoor and outdoor activities were planned and Master Panozzo has some practical teaching experience to add to his resume!

 Sneakers

The Rivermont kitchen was honored today with the presence of Guest Chef Miley Ashby.  Miss Ashby worked with Chef June McWilliams on the planning and started her day bright and early.  She presented her menu to the Headmaster and made sure the kitchen counters were spotless.  Everyone enjoyed her "Walking Tacos" and rumor has it the Food Network was making inquiries.

 Chef Hat

Our new "staff" was thanks to Rivermont's 2011 Auction, the creativity of the Auction Committee, and the fearlessness of both Mrs. McWilliams and Mr. Pillow.  Bidders carefully watched the silent auction tables to make sure their bid would not be outdone.  In the end, the highest bids won.  Chef for a Day and P.E. Teacher for a Day are only some of the exciting items available at Rivermont's Annual Auction.  This yearly event brings families and friends together to support Rivermont's academic program in an evening of good food and good company - all for a good cause!  Be sure to mark your calendars for this year's event, which will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Hotel Blackhawk in Davenport.

Miss Ashby and Mr. Panozzo may submit their job applications as soon as they complete their studies!

One more lap and Bon Appetit,

Rick St. Laurent

Headmaster

Stay tuned for pictures of our new "staff" in action in next week's HEADlines!

Lego League: Sport for the Mind!

The Rivermont fifth grade class is discovering that it's more fun to design and create a robot than it is to play with one!

The fifth grade class has formed 2 teams to participate in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics program!  Team Masterminds and Team Technical Difficulties will design, build, program, and test a fully autonomous robot capable of completing pre-assigned missions!

Lego Photo (1)

The program will culminate with a local tournament at the Putnam Museum on Saturday, December 10th.  Top performing teams at this local tournament will be invited to state and international tournaments.

Lego Photo (2)

FLL is a robotics program for students ages 9-16.  Teams, composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach, program an autonomous robot using the LEGO MINDSTORMS robot set to score points on a thematic playing surface and create an innovative solution to a problem, which is different every year and based on a real-world scientific topic.

This year's "problem" - also referred to as the Challenge - is titled "Food Factor - Keeping Food Safe" and challenges teams to identify points of contamination our food encounters, then find ways to prevent these contaminates.

With over 19,000 teams in over 55 countries, FLL is a powerful program that helps young people discover the fun in science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge, and valuable life skills!

Follow the fifth grade class on their website, updated weekly with photos and blog posts!
