Dear Rivermont Community,

As we wrap up the school year, we celebrate the achievements of our students!  Wednesday, June 1st at 9:00 a.m. Kindergarten through Grade 5 will participate in our LS Promotion Ceremony, where they will be recognized for participation and accomplishments in school activities.  In addition, each student will be presented with a certificate promoting them to the next grade.  The MS & US Awards Ceremony will follow at 10:30 a.m., where Grades 6 through 12 will be recognized, including awards presented by several community groups.  These ceremonies are wonderful opportunities for families to celebrate together and for alums to relive memories and congratulate the new crop of Lions.

The week concludes with Senior Project Presentations on Friday, June 3rd at 9:30 a.m. and our 124th Commencement Exercises at 4:00 p.m.  In addition to the awarding of diplomas, some of the School's most prestigious awards are presented.  The ceremony is held on the south terrace of the Mansion overlooking the Mississippi.

 Graduation Picture

While we may be focused on the close of this school year, plans are well underway for next.  Rivermont has launched its iPad Pilot Program in the Upper School with the hopes of expanding to other grades in the very near future.  This summer will see the expansion of our WiFi network to include the whole campus.  Both the Early School and the English classes will benefit from video technology.  Flip cameras in Early School will record student work, while a video editing program, made possible by generosity of Mrs. Pokora's 25th Anniversary, will allow students to create original video productions in the English department.  Our technology extravaganza will also include installation of Promethean and touch screen projectors in our remaining academic classrooms.

Although technology is critical to learning and working in today's world, it is vital that an appreciation for nature be part of that experience.  Building on our Outdoor Learning Experience (OLE) Day, we will launch (our alums will say re-launch) an outdoor education program that will take Upper School students to northern Wisconsin for camping, canoeing, climbing, and outdoor survival and leadership training.  This week away from the books will deepen student relationships, expand their knowledge of the natural world, and promote resilience and positive risk taking.  Having been involved in leading outdoor education trips for over 20 years, I am very excited to bring this to Rivermont.  Watch for outdoor education opportunities for our Lower and Middle School students, as well.

 Manito-wish Collage

Under the direction of Kris Skaggs and Sally Schulz, our newly formed show choir will expand our performance program.  2011-12 will also see the addition of a Middle School play production production, which will surely become a new Rivermont tradition.

As you can see, Rivermont does not rest on its laurels.  We are continually looking to enhance and expand the Rivermont Experience.  Always true to our roots in the 3R's - reading, (w)riting, and (a)rithmetic, the Rivermont Experience enriches its students in 5 more R's - risk , rigor, respect, responsibility, and resilience.

Thank you for an excellent year!  Have a restful and safe summer so you can return to continue being part of the Rivermont Experience!  To our seniors - good luck, good friends, and good memories!

Once a Lion, Always a Lion,

Rick St. Laurent

Headmaster

First Day of School!

Grades 3, 4, & 5 Track Meet Results

On Tuesday, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades participated in their annual track meet at Paul V. Olsen track at Augustana.  We had beautiful weather for the track meet and lots of wonderful help.  Middle School Track Coach Carey DeWitt, along with the classroom teachers Mrs. Ashby, Ms. Topalian, and Mrs. Schroeder were instrumental in making the meet run smoothly!  Special thanks to the parents who were able to help with field events and cheering!  We also appreciate Augustana's hospitality.

The track meet is part of Rivermont's ongoing effort to provide sport instruction to Lower School students.  This past year, our coaching staff has provided instruction in volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading in the Lower School.

Rivermont Student Organizes Fundraiser for Joplin, MO

Rivermont eighth grader Michal Porubcin has organized a fundraiser for the American Red Cross relief efforts following the devastating tornado in Joplin, MO.  Michal, an avid tennis player, has competed in tennis tournaments in Joplin and the tragedy has hit close to home for him.  He is asking Rivermont families to join him in raising funds for the relief effort.

Donations are being collected at both front desks on campus (Becherer Hall and the Mansion) and will be sent to the American Red Cross Foundation from Rivermont Collegiate.  Whatever amount you are able to give is greatly appreciated.  Please make checks out to the American Red Cross.  Donations will be accepted through June 1st.

Michal is always impressed by the way the Rivermont community steps up in times of great need and disaster and thanks you for your support!
