Rivermont Service Day!
Dear Rivermont Community,
Today, Rivermont students could be found across the Quad Cities giving back. Inspired by the Upper School students who annually participate in the United Way Day of Caring, Rivermont's entire student body decided they wanted to do their part and so Rivermont's own annual Service Day became a tradition!
Today finds our students engaged and involved, beginning with Kindergarten and Fifth Grade who sang songs and brought flowers to the Iowa Masonic Home in Bettendorf. Second and Third Grade visited the Bettendorf Health Care Center and the First and Fourth Grade went to Manor Care in Davenport. Our Lower School students gave the gifts of songs and flowers, but in all probability were equally enriched by time spent with a generation who have lived and seen so much!

Our Middle School, Grades 6-8, participated in a campus service workshop and then set out to work in the Bettendorf parks and bike trails. As our community becomes increasingly aware of the ecological importance of green space, we realize how fortunate we are to have such extensive parks and trails. Today was a good day for our Middle Schoolers to continue their education as stewards of their environment!

Rivermont's Upper School students, Grades 9-12, served as leaders for younger students by putting their gardening and maintenance skills to use at the Center for Active Seniors (CASI), the Central Community Circle Food Pantry/Café on Vine, and even our own campus! Clearing away winter's debris and planting gardens that will give back throughout the year is a wonderful lesson in how just a few hours spent in service can impact a community for months to come.

And then of course, some service projects are just plain fun! Middle and Upper Schoolers finished the day with a dodgeball tournament in our gym to benefit the United Way Student Campaign.
Days like today give the School the opportunity to expand lessons of the classroom to the community around us. Our students learn about the needs of their community and the positive impact one individual can have.
I hope you join me in the pride I feel in our students. I congratulate them on their day and thank them for representing Rivermont in such a wonderful way!

Zoo for the Day?!!
Would any Lower School student like to bring a toy or stuffed animal to school? For our final spring service project, Lower School Student Council would like to adopt an animal from the Niabi Zoo. Our donations would help an animal receive nutritious snacks and toys to help them exercise and PLAY!
To raise funds, we are asking LS students to donate at least 50 cents to bring a stuffed animal or toy to school and introduce it on stage during Morning Meeting on Friday, May 13th.
We hope everyone will participate and make Rivermont a Zoo for the Day!

Support the NHS Book Drive!
In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, the Rivermont National Honor Society is holding a Book Drive to provide kids in developing nations with quality educational materials. A book can impact a child's life tremendously. As Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize recipient said, "Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development."
Please help support this important cause to provide educational materials for kids all over the world!
We are looking for excellent quality new/used books such as:
Books for native speakers of Spanish and French
English grammar
Science texts (K-University)
Math texts (K-University)
Dictionaries and picture dictionaries
Medical texts
Agriculture and Animal Science texts
Vocational books (plumbing, electrical wiring, carpentry)
Children's library books (picture, story, and chapter books)
Encyclopedias newer than 1990
Unfortunately, we cannot accept:
Magazines
Journals (except JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine)
Encyclopedias older than 1990
Workbooks
Textbooks more than 10 years old (except agriculture books)
All books will be donated through the International Book Project, Inc.
Thank you for your support!

NAIS 20/20 Challenge:
Deforestation
The fifth grade has finished the NAIS 20/20 Challenge on Deforestation! Students researched and completed projects on the topic from January through April. Students divided into groups and wrote a children's book, titled Peter's Big Day, and gave a copy to all Lower School classes. Students also wrote a comic book, starred in a commercial, and produced a PowerPoint presentation, all highlighting the dangers of deforestation and how to overcome this global issue.
The NAIS 20/20 Challenge is an Internet-based program that pairs classes from schools in the U.S. with counterpart classes in schools in other countries. Together, the teams tackle real global problems to find solutions that can be implemented at the local level and in their own communities.
Way to go, fifth grade!
