Not an extended vacation!
Dear Rivermont Community,
Welcome back from Spring Break! Believe it or not, we have seven weeks remaining before our End of the Year activities. I have just returned from a four day ISACS school accreditation visit. Many of you may recall that in the fall of 2008 Rivermont was visited by a team comprised of twelve individuals from across the ISACS region. This is an important and critical step in the accreditation process and helps set the stage for the school's plans for improvement.
I chaired a team of nine members from ISACS schools in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri. We convened on Sunday afternoon and prepared for a four day immersion in the school we were visiting. It has been said that one day on an ISACS visit is like four weeks in dog years. This was not an exception. The team quickly progressed from a group of strangers meeting for the first time to a well oiled machine that felt intimately connected to the school. The team poured over the 143 page self-study, reviewed a file drawer of exhibits and supporting documents, and interviewed students, faculty, trustees, parents and administration. We became quite expert in our temporary school home.

This is a significant step for any ISACS school but for this school it was especially so since this was the first accreditation visit. Although the school has been in existence nearly forty years, they had never sought accreditation. There was tremendous anticipation and excitement at our visit. The Independent School Association of the Central States (ISACS) is an association of independent schools located in a fifteen state region. While membership in ISACS is voluntary, member schools are required to demonstrate their commitment to quality education and school growth through their participation in the established ISACS accreditation process. This is a seven-year cycle of components consisting of an intensive self-study, visitation by a qualified evaluation team, and several stages of follow-up. Universities and colleges throughout the country recognize ISACS accreditation, and the College Board recognizes ISACS as an accrediting body for secondary schools located in the Midwest.
The experience of serving on a visiting team is both intense and very rewarding. I have served on many teams over the years and I continue to feel this is the best form of professional development one could hope for. It was a pleasure to work with a colleague school seeking accreditation by ISACS, but it is also really nice to be back home!

Battle of the Books!
Rivermont's team of fifth grade students Klaus Storl-Desmond, Naina Ninan, and Sophia Xiao placed fourth at the Eastern Iowa Regional Battle of the Books on Saturday, April 9th. The Rivermont team was the only team of 5th grade students - all the rest were teams of 6th grade students!
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program where students come together to test their knowledge of books they've read in quiz-bowl style. Rivermont Librarian Shalar Brown commented that the questions were very difficult!
Congratulations Klaus, Naina, and Sophia!

1,000 Cranes - 1,000 Prayers
Following the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Rivermont sophomore Kelsey Qu embarked on a mission to collect 1,000 prayers and messages, written on origami paper and folded into paper cranes to carry sympathy, hope, and care to victims of this tragedy. Ancient Japanese tradition states that 1,000 paper cranes will promise one wish - that wish being that Japan finds the strength, courage, and determination to recover and rebuild.
Kelsey would like to thank everyone who wrote a message or prayer for their care and time. With the help of the Rivermont community, she was able to collect 1,000 paper cranes. On April 11, the cranes were sent to the Japanese Red Cross National Headquarters, asking for them to be forwarded to victims at shelters. Together, we are sending prayers, love, and good wishes to Japan, hopefully bringing smiles to their faces and warmth to their hearts during this difficult time.
Rivermont's paper cranes, arranged on the floor at Kelsey's home, before their departure to Japan. |
