Happy Marion Crandell Day!

Dear Rivermont Community,

Every year we pause on Marion Crandell Day to recognize our faculty and staff.  Marion Crandell was a French language instructor at St. Katharine's in the early 1900's. Since she had been educated in Paris, she felt that her knowledge of France and the language would be extremely helpful in aiding soldiers during World War I. A German artillery shell hit the hostel where she was working as a YMCA canteen worker on March 27, 1918. Marion Crandell was the first American woman killed while in active service in World War I.

In a special all-school assembly on Monday the students were treated to a slide show prepared by my assistant, Brittany Marietta.  She did a tremendous job.  Some in the slideshow were people we see everyday while others work behind the scenes to enrich our school community.  Each and every one is dedicated to our students' success and growth.

Although we appreciate all the efforts of the faculty and staff, there are some individuals that must be singled out.  This group represents 140 years of service to the students of Rivermont Collegiate.  Congratulations and thank you!

These are very special milestones and we appreciate your gifts to our community.  Two individuals celebrate an especially important milestone with Rivermont.

Marsha Field and Gwen Livingstone Pokora have dedicated the past 25 years to our School.  Mrs. Pokora has distinguished herself as both a Middle and Upper School English teacher taking budding writers under her wing and guiding their creative spirits.  She has helped to bring performing artists to our campus to inspire and entertain us.  She has cajoled administrators and parents to expose our students to an exceptional Shakespearean troupe.

Mrs. Field began in the Upper School as the Director's Administrative Assistant and today does so for the Business Manager.  But it does not end there, if you have received textbooks - she does that, if you charge to your lunch account - she does that, if you have enrolled, re-enrolled and submitted any data to the School - she has managed that.  If you need to know anything about the history of our School - she is the one to ask.

We will honor Mrs. Field and Mrs. Pokora at a special reception on May 15th in the Mansion.  Watch the mail for your invitation!

Rivermont Collegiate is about its people and this year we honor a special group of people in our community, those who teach and do the work of the school so its students can learn and its parents can be assured that their children will be cared for in all ways.  Our thanks, admiration, and praise!
