Dear Rivermont Community,
The leprechauns broke into PreSchool and Junior Kindergarten classrooms early Thursday, leaving footprints and a mess all over! Students carefully tracked the green footprints, hoping to catch one of the crafty little creatures, but to no avail. Mr. Pollard told the preschoolers that when he arrived in the room early in the morning, the leprechauns had already made their escape. We think he might have scared them away, as he is so much bigger than the wee folk. Anyway, the children cleaned up the mess made by the leprechauns and went about their business. It takes more than a few leprechauns to district Rivermont students from their work!
The second graders also discovered just how clever these little intruders can be. They built all manner of leprechaun traps and set them in the classroom. Alas, none were caught, yet all the "gold" was gone! Guess it will be back to the drawing board for next year's invasion.

I received a wonderful letter and gift from one of our alumnae of the Class of 1960. We love to hear from our alums, learning what they are doing now and sharing fond memories of their time at the School. 1960 was in the St. Kit's days, and although this alum only attended her junior and senior years, she credits her success in college with her time at the School. She shared how thankful she was that her parents offered her the chance to attend St. Kit's. In case you were not aware, St. Kit's is the affectionate term used for St. Katharine's School. For this alum, she is proud that many students continue to excel at what is now Rivermont and that we are mindful of our cherished roots in St. Kit's and later SKSM. I think she would also be proud to learn that we have kept some of the School's traditions - both secular and Episcopalian - alive.
Report cards are going home this weekend, so please watch the mail or your child's backpack. Parent-teacher conferences will take place on Thursday and Friday, March 24th and 25th. If you have not already done so, you may sign up in the binder in Central Hall for short meetings with your child's teachers.
March 25th is the last day to take advantage of the Early Bird Discount to receive a 50% reduction in your comprehensive fee if your child's re-enrollment contract and deposit are returned to the Business Office. If you have not received your re-enrollment paperwork, please contact Marsha Field at field@rvmt.org.

The Senior Class of 2011 Leads the Way in the Annual Fund Classroom Challenge!
We have a first winner in the 2010-11 Annual Fund Classroom Challenge! The Class of 2011 has led the way with 100% participation. Way to go! As you can see, the third and fifth grade are very close!
Remember - each grade to reach 100% participation in the 2010-11 Annual Fund by April 1st will receive a special ice cream party (PS-8th) or pizza party (9th-12th)!

At this time, we have 70% parent participation in the 2010-11 Annual Fund. Last year was a historic high of 81% parent participation - which we hope to exceed this year! |
Everyone Loves Pi!
On Monday, students in grades 3-12 celebrated Pi Day! The celebration kicked off with a multi-grade math relay in the gym. Students solved math problems of increasing difficulty as each team sent members, from youngest to oldest, to either solve the problem or wave a white flag for help from the next team member in line. Team Pumpkin won the relay, earning a "No Math Homework Night" to use at their discretion! Congrats to Jacob Holland, Aditya Shah, Isabella Holland, Kaitlyn Mayfield, Alex Skillin, Bailey Mangan, Lauren Douglas, Victoria Mbakwe, Christine Mbakwe, and Christopher Mbakwe!
Next, students moved to the cafeteria, where they enjoyed pie of the apple, cherry, and chocolate variety! The next part of the competition consisted of recitation, from memory, of pi. Eight students competed, with the Mbakwe family grabbing the top three positions:
3rd - Christine Mbakwe - 91 places of pi
2nd - Christopher Mbakwe - 115 places of pi
1st - Victoria Mbakwe - 161 places of pi

A BIG thank you to Sue Buck for organizing this great activity, and also to her husband, Joe Buck, for his assistance!

Can math change a child's life?
You bet!
Thirteen Lower School students participated in the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Math-A-Thon, raising over $1,135! The Math-A-Thon is one of St. Jude's most successful fund-raising programs. Participants ask for pledges from family members and friends. Then, using Math-A-Thon interactive CDs or Fun Books, students solve math problems and raise money for St. Jude.
The top fundraiser was Aidan Sears (Kindergarten), who raised $325! Aidan was closely followed by Aislinn Geedey (Fourth Grade) and Eve Strasser (Third Grade).
Participants included:
Kindergarten: Miley Ashby, Isabella Jones, Aidan Sears
1st Grade: Olivia Schroeder
2nd Grade: Annika Didelot, Angela Jones
3rd Grade: Genevieve Strasser, William Sharis
4th Grade: Genevieve Solange Bolger, Evan Didelot, Aislinn Geedey, Lauren Schroeder, Aditya Shah |
1,000 Cranes - 1,000 Prayers - 1 Wish
Help send prayers and paper cranes to Japan
In the aftermath of the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Rivermont sophomore Kelsey Qu is asking Rivermont students and families to dedicate some of their time to write a thoughtful prayer to the victims in Japan. Kelsey's goal is to collect 1,000 thoughts/prayers on origami paper, which will be folded into paper cranes. Ancient Japanese tradition states that 1,000 paper cranes will promise one wish - that wish, in this circumstance, being that the victims in Japan may find the strength, courage, and perseverance to rebuild their communities and their lives.
Origami paper squares are available at the Mansion front desk on which to write your thoughts and prayers, and may be left in the box also located at the Mansion front desk. Kelsey and volunteer classmates will fold your thoughts and prayers into cranes, which will be sent to Japan. |

The screening event includes a film preview, keynote speaker with an open question and answer session, and a viewing of the Davenport Civil Rights Exhibit.
There is no cost to attend, but seating is limited. All attendees must RSVP by April 1st to BE-Brasel@wiu.edu or call (309) 764-2400.
