Why Rivermont?
Dear Rivermont Community,
Research shows (NAIS, HERI) that school success is related to 2 factors: quality teachers and small school size. Teachers who are adept in their field and attuned to the needs of students are able (and willing) to guide students to maximize their potential. Students learn how to learn, thereby giving them the skills to be lifelong learners. Small schools make it possible for teachers to know their students - their passions, their risks, their ambitions. Each student stands out and is noticed. No one gets lost in the crowd. Like the song says, "everybody knows your name."

At Rivermont, college prep begins in Lower School. Students may not be writing college essays in Kindergarten, but they are practicing the techniques of writing a five paragraph paper in the First Grade, albeit on a smaller scale. Inquiry, analysis, problem solving, and oral presentations can be found in all Lower School classrooms.
Data indicates that independent school students are 5-10 times more likely than students in public schools to play sports and engage in the arts (87% of students quit interscholastic sports by high school.) The ethos of Rivermont is that everyone "plays" - or as we like to say, there are no spectators, only participants. In education and in life, it is important to know that playing is more important than winning and that extracurricular involvement is a better predictor of overall success in college than are grades or SAT and ACT scores. If you are a player in school, you will be a player in college, and in life.

The pattern begins in Lower School with emphasis on creating a positive learning climate for each child, and is sustained through Middle and Upper School, where students are "expected" to do well academically and "needed" to participate extracurricularly.
We graduate students who are prepared for college, work, and citizenship with the knowledge and capacities necessary to lead productive and purposeful lives in an uncertain and ever-changing future.
Why Rivermont? Based on sound research, the well earned Rivermont reputation of being a school that knows your child, cares about your child, ensures that your child is never a spectator or left on the bench, and graduates students who are ready and capable of attending the country's best colleges and universities, I'm not sure there is a question, only a statement - OF COURSE Rivermont!

Rivermont IS Collegiate!

Congratulations, MATHCOUNTS!
We have received official notice that the Rivermont MATHCOUNTS team took 3rd place in the local competition for Iowa and Illinois schools, held in early February. This is a fantastic achievement, given that Rivermont was up against much larger schools that had many more students competing to participate on their team, noted Rivermont MATHCOUNTS Coach Sue Buck.
