The Rivermont Experience
Dear Rivermont Community,
We often describe Rivermont as an independent school, but what does that mean and how is it different from other schools?
Rivermont is independent in 2 critical ways. First, we are independent in governance, organized as a not-for-profit, non-discriminatory corporation governed by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. Rivermont is not owned by the government as are public schools, by a diocese/church as are parochial schools, or by a for-profit entity as are proprietary schools. Second, we are independent in finance meaning that we charge tuition and raise money to operate the school. We are not supported primarily by public monies or religious subsidies.
Our independence offers us 4 essential freedoms
- we are free to define our mission thereby explaining why we exist and whom we serve.
- we are free to admit students and families who will benefit from our stated mission and who will deepen and expand that mission.
- we are free to hire individuals who meet our needs, share our mission, and bring expertise and professionalism to our programs.
- we are free to determine and modify our curriculum to meet the goals and aspirations of our mission, making the best use of the talents and expertise of our staff.
Tuition at independent schools like Rivermont might make some wonder if such schools are only for the wealthy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Rivermont families value the education of their children and have made it a financial priority. It is a sacrifice for them to provide a Rivermont education for their children. Likewise, the School and its supporters strive to maintain costs and make funds available to support students who might otherwise not be able to have the Rivermont Experience. Sibling discounts and need-based financial aid help the School ensure its socio-economic diversity while reciprocal grants and tuition remission help maintain an exceptional staff. Nearly 60% of Rivermont's students benefit from the afore-mentioned discounts/grants.
Rivermont is not "elitist" in any way except in terms of academic expectations. We expect our students and our staff to set their sights high and commit time and resources to achieve their goals. In this we are homogenous, however it ends there. In all other ways we are as diverse as the fabric of the Quad Cities; sometimes more so than other schools. We are proud of our racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity and strive to support and expand it through our celebrations, our discussions, and our commitment to financial aid. Rivermont families come from every economic level with over 30% supported by need-based grants.

Rivermont is one of the almost 1,400 schools that make up the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) which enrolls some of this country's best and brightest. We are unique! We are independent! We are . . .

Young Scientists Recognized!
A big round of applause to eleventh grade students Meghana Pagadala and Pavane Gorrepati, whose research proposals have been accepted for presentation at the 2011 Iowa Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), to be held at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Iowa City on February 24th and 25th, 2011. The JSHS Program is designed to challenge and engage students (grades 9-12) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students throughout the nation compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.
Congrats, ladies!

On Wednesday, January 26th, Rivermont Upper School students participated in the United Way Student Day of Caring. Our students helped at the Center for Active Seniors (CASI), Edgerton Women's Health Center, and World Relief. This has become an annual event for Upper School students. Service is an important part of the Rivermont Experience and in the spring of 2009, we initiated the Rivermont Service Day to provide additional opportunities for Rivermont students in grades K-12 to serve the community. Throughout the year, both collectively through our student organizations and individually, our students demonstrate caring and commitment to the greater good.
At Edgerton Women's Health Center, we made baby blankets out of various soft, bright fabrics. As we worked, we learned the purposes of Edgerton: providing prenatal care and nutrition for moms and their young children. It was a unique experience, in which we got to be creative and work as a team while helping others in need. We selected different bright fabrics, cut, and tied the ends to make vibrant baby blankets - and also ate delicious pizza! It was a privilege to help the future children of our community. - Rebecca Cupp, Class of 2013
Volunteering at the World Relief Center is something that everyone should experience! My group helped "pull" necessities and furniture from the storage area for an apartment that a 21-year-old man from Malaysia will move into. We all had fun and worked together as a team to figure out what to pack. In addition, we unpacked boxes of donations and sorted them on shelves and along the walls. The experience was fun for all, and we discovered many new things! Even though, I admit, some plates were broken, we all enjoyed every minute of volunteering at the World Relief Center. - Kelsey Qu, Class of 2013 Our group exercised with the CASI seniors, transferred items from the building garage to a new storage location, and cleaned windows. We really enjoyed the exercising sessions; everyone was very energetic. After breaking a sweat exercising, we sweat even more transferring things from the garage to storage. The job was fun because everyone pitched in and got it done efficiently, as we were treated with chocolate cheesecake afterwards! - Chris Mbakwe, Class of 2011 |
