Rivermont seventh grader Harrison Qu has been selected to participate in the "Bows and Bridges" Strings Honor Festival for students in grades 6-9.  This special orchestra festival is being held in connection with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra season finale concert, featuring world-renowned violinist Midori.  The "Bows and Bridges" festival day is Saturday, April 16th, with a 9:00 a.m. rehearsal followed by a 1:00 p.m. concert at the Adler Theatre in Davenport.  The Quad City Symphony Orchestra season finale featuring Midori will also be held Saturday, April 16th at 8:00 p.m. at the Adler Theatre.

Congratulations, Harrison!

What's growing on YOUR hands??

The 4th and 5th grade classes took a trip to the Putnam Museum this week to explore an exhibit about microbes!  Students made impressions of their fingers and two days later, discovered the types of germs living on their hands!  Dara Wegman-Geedey, mother of 4th grade student Aislinn Geedey, explained to the class the different types of germs.  Students made hypotheses about what groups had better germ fighting skills - 4th vs. 5th grade, boys vs. girls, teachers vs. students, etc.  Students and teacher really enjoyed this interactive science lesson and will continue the research!

Think About It: E-Waste
Get new electronics as holiday gifts?
What are you doing with the old ones?

Pavane Gorrepati, Class of 2012

A major problem has consumed the United States and other European nations - e-waste.  E-waste includes electronics such as old cell phones, cartridges, and printers.  As gadgets evolve and replace old ones, what happens to the older versions?  Unfortunately, many end up in landfills and are exported to Asia.

E-waste in landfills seeps toxic chemicals that percolate into the land and contaminate ground water, and can also be released into the atmosphere.  Another method of disposal is incineration.  Through incineration, metals (such as mercury), are released into the atmosphere.  Export of e-waste to developing countries is a major problem.  In fact, in 2005 inspectors found that 18 European seaports planned to export 47 percent of waste illegally.  Developing nations such as Africa, China, and India are receiving e-waste and creating health problems for the children who often do the recycling by hand.

E-waste (1)

Many people simply don't know how to properly dispose of old cell phones, TVs, printers, and computers.  Recycling programs are set up in order to deal with these items.  For example, Panasonic has committed to responsibly recycling their products.  Best Buy started a recycle e-waste program where drop-off kiosks have been implemented to accept any old electronics, from TVs to video cables.  When it comes to disposing of electronics, recycling is the safest and most environmentally friendly option.

Many states are taking action and highlighting the issue.  In the last eight years, twenty-four states have enacted laws to mandate the collection and recycling of electronics.  California was the first state to enact a law in 2003, and last year Vermont, South Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania joined 20 other states by creating laws.  Various e-waste recycling laws cover 65% of the U.S. population.

The Scott County Electronic Demanufacturing Facility, located at 1048 East 59th Street in Davenport (just north of the Scott Area Recycling Center), provides residents and businesses an environmentally sound disposal option for e-waste.  Materials accepted include cell phones, cameras, computers, printers, DVD players, CD players, VCRs, video game equipment, televisions, and more.

A Hot Dog Symphony: Inside the Music!
Friday, February 4th, 2011
Adler Theatre, Davenport - 6:30 p.m.

This free event provides an opportunity for children to attend a dress rehearsal of the Quad City Sympony Orchestra!  A light supper (hot dogs and drinks) will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dress rehearsal at 7:00 p.m.  Later in the evening, while musicians take a break, students have the opportunity to speak with conductor Mark Russell Smith and guest soloist Gary Bordner, a trumpet player.  This special event is geared towards families and is appropriate for any age child (up to teenagers!) who is able to sit quietly and enjoy a music rehearsal.

The symphony requests an RSVP by January 19th if you wish to attend.  This is a free event, but the symphony needs to know how much food to prepare.  Please contact the symphony box office at (563) 322-7276 to RSVP and for additional information.
