The Rivermont Experience

Dear Rivermont Community,

Although Rivermont is nestled on an idyllic bluff overlooking the Mississippi our students are engaged in the Quad Cities.  Learning not only occurs in the classroom, the stage or the playing field/court but also through first-hand experiences and interactions with community resources.  Rivermont is committed to the use of the Quad Cities and surrounding communities as extensions of our classrooms as well as helping our students appreciate the rich opportunities available.  Some schools view this as an "extra" that can be eliminated as a response to budget constraints while Rivermont views this as an important component in preparing our students to become world citizens.  As with all good foundations we begin at home, learning to value what makes a culture thrive.  All Rivermont students, from our 3 years olds to our seniors, participate in field trips and community activities.

Here is a sample from the past few months:

  • Bettendorf Public Library - Grades 6-12 participate in regular book talks
  • Augustana College - Tredway Library - Upper School students conduct research with the guidance and support of the college librarians
  • Putnam Museum - 4th and 5th graders will explore the world of microbiology through their new exhibit
  • Whiteys Ice Cream plant - First graders learned how ice cream is made and created their own flavors
  • Family Museum, Bettendorf - First graders explored the money exhibit
  • Literature Festival at the RiverCenter - Lower School students visited with authors and participated in reading and book talks
  • Herbert Hoover Presidential Library - Fourth graders experienced life in early Iowa and learned about Iowa's contribution to the presidential roster
  • St. Ambrose University - Galvin Fine Arts Center - Lower School students attended a professional theatrical performance
  • Quad City Ballet - students attended the performance of The Nutcracker
  • CASI - Middle and Upper School students assisted with holiday events
  • Junior Achievement - 4th and 5th graders participated in the BizTown simulation
  • 5th though 12th grade student-athletes travel across the area competing at area schools

This is just a small sample from the past three months.  When surveying the entire school year it becomes clear that our students are exposed to a rich and varied spectrum of activities, exhibits and interests.  These opportunities enrich Rivermont's curriculum, expose students to community resources and leaders, and teach our students the value of the investment of their talents and gifts.

The Rivermont Experience is broad and deep and our alumni tell us it has been a major influence in the individuals they have become.   No spectators, only participants - yesterday, today, and tomorrow!

6:00 p.m.
Centennial Hall - Augustana College

Augustana College and the Dr.  King Celebration Committee invite members of the Quad City Community to join us for our annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as we celebrate the legacy of this great leader through powerful speakers, music, and dance.

A Hot Dog Symphony: Inside the Music!
Friday, February 4th, 2011
Adler Theatre, Davenport - 6:30 p.m.

This free event provides an opportunity for children to attend a dress rehearsal of the Quad City Sympony Orchestra!  A light supper (hot dogs and drinks) will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dress rehearsal at 7:00 p.m.  Later in the evening, while musicians take a break, students have the opportunity to speak with conductor Mark Russell Smith and guest soloist Gary Bordner, a trumpet player.  This special event is geared towards families and is appropriate for any age child (up to teenagers!) who is able to sit quietly and enjoy a music rehearsal.

The symphony requests an RSVP by January 19th if you wish to attend.  This is a free event, but the symphony needs to know how much food to prepare.  Please contact the symphony box office at (563) 322-7276 to RSVP and for additional information.

The Rivermont music faculty highly recommends you take advantage of this wonderful live orchestral music concert!
