Iowa Hero

Dear Rivermont Community,

One of Iowa's own was in the limelight this week.  It was clear this was not a place he had chosen and he was quick to note that he did not get there by himself.  He actually would have given up the limelight for the presence of his friends.  It was his selflessness, humility, and keen sense of duty and service that placed Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta in the right place, at the right time for him to do the right thing.

Many have sacrificed, putting others' needs first without regard to personal safety or gain.  Most are never recognized.  Giunta reminded us of this as he accepted America's highest military honor becoming the first living Medal of Honor winner of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.  Midwesterners, Iowans in particular, stood a little straighter with their heads held high as one of our own was singled out and responded with class and dignity.  His bravery made him a hero but his character makes him a role model.

Congratulations and thanks to Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, his family, and his comrades.

Bonnie Campbell, college counselor and Chinese instructor, has been selected to join the 2010 Advanced Study and Training Program on Pedagogy and Chinese Teaching Materials organized by Hanban/ Confucius Institute Headquarters from the 17th to the 23rd of November, 2010 at the Beijing Foreign Language School. Various training programs will be carried out during this week, including workshops and local school visits in China. These opportunities will give Ms. Campbell firsthand information on the latest Chinese language teaching materials (including how to best incorporate them into the classroom).  This will be Ms. Campbell's second trip to China with Hanban.

Bed, Bath, and  Beyond for Bethany

The National Junior Honor Society is hosting "Bed, Bath, and Beyond for Bethany" month.  Through December 10th, NJHS members will be collecting donations for the THY program.  This program gives homeless youth in the Quad Cities housing, food, and an opportunity to work.  There are about 850 homeless youth in Davenport and Rock Island combined.  Donation boxes are located around the school for supplies such as clothes and household products (cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, personal hygiene supplies, boxed food, linens, etc.).  Lists of recommended items to donate are posted around school as well.

Paper Towels (2)Pantene ShampooSoftsoap

NJHS will also host a Pajama Day and after school party for Middle and Upper School (grades 6-12) on Friday, November 19th.  Students are invited to wear pajamas to school for a donation of $5 and to attend a movie party from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  Cost for refreshments at the movie party will be $2 for any students who didn't participate in pajama day (and already donated $5).  Proceeds benefit the Homeless Youth project.

If you have any further questions, please contact Lolly Telleen or Mrs. Schroeder.

Wear A Hat To School Day!

Lower School Student Council members are giving back to our community this holiday season!  In years past, LS StuCo has "adopted" senior citizens and made their holidays brighter by providing gifts for those who can't afford the holidays or who no longer have family or friends to remember them.  To continue this tradition, LS StuCo is sponsoring Wear A Hat To School Day!  For a donation of 50 cents (Lower School) or $1 (Middle and Upper School), students are invited to wear a hat to school on Wednesday, December 1st.  All money collected will be used to purchase gifts.

LS StuCo will be shopping for the gifts on Friday, December 3rd.  StuCo members will be leaving campus at 10:25 a.m. and traveling to Walmart, where they will shop for items on the senior citizens' wish lists.  They will then be eating lunch at Chick-Fil-A (students should bring money to purchase lunch) before returning to school.

Thank you for your support!

Got Shoes?

Some Don't!  Let's Help!

This week, Rivermont kicked off our second year of participation in the Shoes That Fit program.  This community-wide program provides new shoes to Quad City school children who cannot afford them.  The need for shoes continues to be high and many of the recipients are in desperate need of dry, warm shoes for the winter.

To participate, simply select a shoe tag from the display in Central Hall, log the shoe number with Tammi Burrell at the reception desk, and donate either $15 to purchase the shoe tag or use the information on the tag to purchase the needed shoes and return to Rivermont by Wednesday, November 24th.  Your name will be written on the tag and it will be displayed in the auditorium so that we can all see what great progress we are making!

Thank you in advance for helping to make Shoes That Fit a success.  We are confident that the Rivermont community will rise to the occassion, as you always do, to help fill this need in the Quad Cities.  If you have any questions, please contact Vicki Wallace at (563) 441-0253, (563) 528-0759, or vswallace@msn.com
