¡Bien hecho, Chile!
Dear Rivermont Community, The world has watched as bad news turned into good for the miners trapped in Chile for 69 days. Not only were all 33 rescued but they were rescued ahead of the projected schedule and the rescue itself occurred in less than half the time anticipated. Most of us with no connection to the Chilean miners were ecstatic as the first miner emerged from the capsule so the emotions of family, friends, and fellow Chileans was utterly fantastic. It was refreshing to be consumed by such positive energy.
American ingenuity played a major role in the Chilean mine rescue as the American team was the first to break through. Playing a role in such a momentous event is both uplifting and affirming. Amid all this excitement, I was struck by the solidarity of the miners' families and of the Chilean people. They were united in their hope and determination - differences seemed to vanish. As striking as this solidarity appeared, it was outshone by the spirit and resilience of the trapped miners themselves. 69 days underground did not drain their spirit nor dull their joy. The miners emerged bright-eyed, energetic, and amazingly strong. Rather than rushing to be the first out, each encouraged the other to go first. In spite of, or because of, their 69 day ordeal the miners' intellect, character, and creativity became honed. I am in awe of this.
The miners and their families will undoubtedly have much to adjust to and cope with in the months to come but I am encouraged that the resilience and spirit they have demonstrated thus far are not anomalies but are true and deep-rooted dimensions of their personality. This will surely help them with what the future holds. We can only hope to have a small measure of their strength as we live our own lives. The Chilean miners are heroes; they are my heroes.
¡Bien hecho, Chile! Rick St. LaurentHeadmaster |
