One For Books LogoParents' Council News

Attention All Rivermont Parents!
Your Class Can Win A Pizza Party From Happy Joe's!
The Top Seller Will Win Free Pizza for a Year By Raising Funds for One for Books!

It's that time of the year again and our Fall Book Fair is just around the corner.  This year's book fair theme is Here's To Our Heroes ~ Reading Saves The Day!  We are proud to announce that Scholastic is again offering their One for Books program that helps a variety of children's charities annually.   This year's fall fair is October 18th -22nd.   We are kicking off the fair right now with our One for Books fundraiser as an additional way to raise money for Rivermont.  Last year we raised over $1000 just from the One for Books program!  Scholastic matched our donation, and Rivermont received an additional $1000 worth of books for our library.

Each year, thousands of schools across the country participate in One for Books. Scholastic matches the monetary donations schools generate, with a donation of up to one million books to three national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping kids and families in need: Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc., the Kids In Need Foundation, and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

Happy Joe's wants to help make it more exciting, so they have offered Rivermont two exciting ways to really make some dough: 1)Every child at Rivermont will receive five Happy Joe's Fundraising Cards! These cards are normally sold to groups for $1 and then the groups sell them for $5, keeping the $4 as a profit; however, for Rivermont's One for Books donation drive, all of the cards have been donated by Happy Joe's. This means when we sell the cards, Rivermont gets to keep the entire $5 for every card sold! If every Rivermont student sells five cards... $5 x 5 cards = $25 per student x 190 students... that's $4750 for Rivermont! These fundraising cards contain eight Happy Joe's coupons which equal well over $35 dollars in savings from any Happy Joe's. The fundraising cards should be easy to sell because everyone who buys one will get more than what they spent on the cards just by using the large pizza coupon located on the card! That's only one of the eight total offers.  We are sending you an envelope with your child's name on it and five fundraising cards.  All you have to do is try to sell them all for $5 each.  Remember, Rivermont gets to keep ALL of the money raised and whatever we raise will be matched dollar-for-dollar by One for Books, and a donation for that amount will be made to a worthy children's charity to help children at risk.

If you would like to sell more cards, contact Tammi Burrell and she will be happy to give them to you.  Last year the school did a great job selling these cards, but we have the potential to do even better this year!  If we all pull together we can raise even more money for Rivermont and One for Books.  The final bonus to this effort is the class with the highest donation dollar amount will win a fabulous pizza party from Happy Joe's!  The second place class will win an ice cream party, and the individual student who sells the most cards will win FREE PIZZA FOR A YEAR! (That's one large pizza a month for 12 months!)

Checks for the cards should be made out to Rivermont Parent's Council, not Happy Joe's.   All donations from selling these cards for our One for Books program can be given to Tammi Burrell. Her desk is located in Becherer Hall. Just put the money back in the same envelope you received with the cards.  That way your child is sure to get the credit for all he/she sold.

We hope this gets you excited as this could be our biggest year ever if each class shoots to sell 100 cards.  We have the potential of making $7,500 for Rivermont!  Keep in mind that doesn't include the book fair sales! Remember, our Book Fair theme  this year is Here's To Our Heroes - Reading Saves The Day! Let's all be heroes and work together to help those in need while raising funds for the enhancement and improvement of Rivermont Collegiate!

If you have any questions, please contact Tammi Burrell at 359-1366, x-337 or Kristel Ersan at 563-650-4680 (c), or 563-332-8811 x-203 (o).

Please keep in mind we are looking for volunteers to help us run the book fair this year. The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade class parents are slated to help with this effort.  We would welcome additional help from other parents as we need to ensure the fair runs smoothly and that all time slots for manning the fair are filled. You will be hearing from your room moms soon! To volunteer for your two- hour time slot contact your room mom or one of the committee members listed below.

JD logoCalling all High School Students

Once again a great computer program is being offered at John Deere called " IS Explorers that teaches QC area high school students about careers in computer technology." An overview meeting is on Tuesday October 26th for interested students and their parents to discuss what the program is about.  "We are seeking students that have shown deep interest in computers and have dedication and time to participate in meetings on Tuesday nights." This program is for both boys and girls.

IS Explorers is a co-ed program for young adults, offering high school students in the Quad Cities a real world, business view of computers and technology. The program consists of bi-weekly meetings presented by computer professionals who work in the Information Systems division of John Deere. Students are given presentations, take part in hands-on labs and have educational, computer oriented competitions.

Its rich history is complimented by an expansive landscape of mountains, deserts, and glorious beaches. Bethany for Homeless Children and Families Transitional housing for homeless youth program (THY)

This program gives homeless youth in the Quad Cities housing, food, and an opportunity to work.  These youth are usually ages 14-21.  This program's goal is to educate and transition these young men and women into independent living.  This is a very hard job, however.  There are about 850 homeless youth in Davenport and Rock Island combined, and THY can't take care of them all.  They have a hard time taking care of the ones they have now, which is very few. This year, NJHS will be focusing on this cause.  NJHS plans to put donation boxes around the school for supplies such as clothes and bath products.  We will also have supplies lists posted around the school listing recommended donations.  NJHS also plans to host a Pajama Day for Middle and Upper school, in class competitions for Lower School, and other events to support our cause. October will be Rivermont's own "Bedrooms, Bathrooms, and Beyond for Bethany Month".  If you have any further questions, please contact Lolly Telleen or Mrs. Schroeder.  Please help us support the homeless youth of Iowa!
Challenge Saturdays

Challenge Saturdays are classes designed for high ability students who are current members of the Belin-Blank Exceptional Student Talent Search (BESTS).  Students who are not part of BESTS, but who are of high ability, are also encouraged to apply for classes.
In small classes, students receive direct instruction and do advanced work.  Various classes are offered in Iowa City at the University of Iowa or in Des Moines at Saydel High School.  Students choose one class only.  The class meets five times (see below).  Tuition is $350 for the class series.  Financial assistance is available.
