Happy 223! Constitution Day!
Dear
Rivermont Community, On Thursday afternoon the students in grades 3-12 celebrated
Constitution Day with a town hall meeting on specific topics relating to the 5th
amendment, the 14th amendment, term limits and how the nation elects
its president. Students engaged in a lively
and complicated debate. Opinions,
perceptions, and assumptions were freely shared and rebutted. Students had a clear view of freedom of speech
and ideological commitment. In truth, this was a unique opportunity for our students to
participate in the working of democracy. Across the country, communities gather to
discuss topics important to the area and to the nation. Rivermont's town hall was a first-hand
demonstration of democracy in action. Special thanks to Leigh Ann Schroeder, our resident
Constitution aficionado, for organizing this school event and to our panel of
Middle and Upper School students who shared their "expertise."
Thanks and kudos as well to all of the students
who participated in the debate. It was
encouraging to see a full spectrum of age, gender, political persuasion, and introvert/extrovert
participate. Once again, Rivermont Collegiate -- where there are no
spectators, only participants! Happy Constitution Day Rick St. LaurentHeadmaster |

Rivermont Collegiate Students Participate in Jump Rope for Heart
Our students are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers. On Friday, October 1st, Rivermont will hold its annual Jump Rope For Heart event, starting at 1:55 p.m. Please help your child remember to turn pledge forms in to their classroom teachers no later than Monday, October 4th. Students will jump rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association, which funds cardiovascular disease research and public and professional education programs. Over the next two weeks, students will learn and practice their jumping skills and tricks in preparation for the event. In addition to the prizes the AHA provides, this year there is a special incentive! Each form turned in with a minimum of $50 raised will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a special prize: the honor of choosing their class' PE activity for a period! The raffle will take place at the Jump Rope for Heart event, so envelopes must be turned in before that day to be eligible. All envelopes will be drawn for other fun prizes. The school's goal for fundraising this year is $3,000 (approximately $700 more than last year's total). The students' success will determine how long the event will last this year.
Raise minimum of $500 - 15 minutes
Raise minimum of $1,500 - 30 minutes
Raise minimum of $2,500 - 45 minutes
When you're talking to your children about the event, please emphasize that the purpose of this event is to learn how exercise benefits the heart and that volunteering can be fun and beneficial to the entire community. They can really make a difference to an organization that funds lifesaving research and educational programs. Please help our students help others! |

From the College Corner
Seniors: it is not too soon to start looking into
scholarship offers. 1) remember, you should never
pay for scholarship advice, entry, or application. Avoid any site or offer that
asks for money to apply. 2) your first search should be on CollegeBoard
site www.collegeboard.com 3) look at family interests and connections: credit
unions, insurance companies, parent places of employment, scholarships geared to
specific majors, or special circumstances 4) as you apply to colleges you will become aware of
special scholarships available at that institution. Be sure to check the
deadlines for these scholarships 5) as Rivermont receives scholarship information, it
will be displayed in the Reading Room of the
