rk dixon top 5 2 We are in the Top 5

Dear Rivermont Community,

Earlier the week we received great news.  We made it to the Top 5 in the RK Dixon office makeover contest.  Thanks to everyone who voted for us in the first round.  We are in excellent company with the other 4 winners so it will be critical that get get as many people to vote for us in the final round as possible.  Friends, relatives and colleagues can help us get the votes we need.  Facebook and Twitter are excellent ways to broaden our reach and let the social network help us.  Share with your friends!

Winning one of the top 3 prizes would allow Rivermont to strengthen and expand our technology in some critical non-academic areas.  90% of our technology budget is used for equipment and software that is directly used in student learning.  A first prize of $20,000, second prize of $10,000, or third prize of $5,000 would make a significant impact at Rivermont.

The second round of voting begins Thursday, September 9 and ends on Thursday, September 16.  Set a reminder to yourself to vote.  We of course will also send you friendly reminders.
Help us hit our target!

Texting - Driving
America's Deadly Obsession

Millions of people text, talk, or e-mail on their cell phones while driving - a recent survey finds that 71% of people between the ages of 18 and 49 admit they text or talk on the phone while they drive.  This form of distracted driving is sweeping through our country, claiming lives and destroying families.  Nearly 500,000 people are injured and another 6,000 killed each year because drivers are talking, texting, and e-mailing behind the wheel.

On a school campus, especially, you put not only your own life on the line, but risk the lives of our students as they travel to and from classes.  The safety of Rivermont students, parents, visitors, faculty, and staff is our primary concern.  For this reason, we ask the entire Rivermont community to make the pledge to not drive distracted, both on and off campus.  If you think you can call, text, and drive at the same time, you cannot.  That message you can't wait to send could kill.

Volleyball
Thirty girls are playing Rivermont volleyball on three teams this fall.  Our 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade teams will open the season at Our Lady of Grace on Tuesday, September 7.  The 7th/8th grade team will be home on Thursday, September 8 for a 5:30 p.m. game with Heritage.

The varsity girls will open the season on Wednesday, September 15 at home against the Bettendorf 9th grade team.  Game time is 6:30 p.m.

The PRIDE
With more games than ever this year, we will need to charge a small admission fee at our home games to help cover the increased cost of officials.  Middle School admission prices are set by our conference ($1 per student, $2 per adult, $5 per family).  Rivermont students and children under 6 will continue to be admitted free of charge.

Varsity prices will be $2 per student, $4 per adult, and $10 per family.  Rivermont students and children under 6 are admitted free.

To make your life easier, we are offering membership in our newly formed booster club called "The PRIDE."

Your membership earns you a season pass that will admit you to all middle school and varsity home games for the entire school year.

There are two types of memberships:
            Family Membership                            $25
You will receive passes for all members of your immediate family.

            Extended Family Membership            $50
You will receive passes for Mom, Dad, Aunts, Uncles, grandparents, and                           siblings.

**Rivermont Faculty and Staff will receive a complimentary Family Membership.

Memberships can be purchased at home games.  Membership benefits of The PRIDE also include the opportunity to purchase the same coaching shirts worn by our coaching staff and the varsity team warm-ups.

The primary goal of The PRIDE is to aid the Athletic Director in the promotion of school spirit, the presentation of athletic events, and to enhance the recognition of our coaches and student-athletes.

I have asked a few parents to help as we start the booster club.  All parents are welcome to provide their input and support.   Thanks to the following for their help:

5th Grade         Sean and Ann Goodman
6th Grade         Bob Ellis and Laura Silverberg
8th Grade         John and Amy Telleen
            Upper School    Monica Weeks
                                     Susan Newsome

Saturday Sports

From the College Corner

College representatives have begun scheduling visits. Representatives are available for juniors, seniors, and any interested sophomores at 10:50 on Mondays. This coincides with Advisory Period. So far we have scheduled:

September 28  Maria Silippone of Knox College
October 18      Mike Pettis of Augustana College
October 25      Susan Hillman of Earlham College

Students are encouraged to attend even if the school is not on their list for application. Talking in a small group setting with a college representative can gain insight into the general college application process, college majors, honors programs, etc. and help students in applying to other schools. Sometimes a student may be surprised to find the school more appealing than he or she expected.

Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art Collection
Displayed for the first time as a whole, the 318-piece Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art Collection of Augustana College introduces Southwest Pueblo art at a level rarely found in the Midwest. Kent Olson (Augustana '61) and his wife Elaine donated the collection to Augustana in 2004, with subsequent additions. Included are 36 photogravures by Edward Curtis from his volume The Hopi. Dating from pre-1600 to the present, the collection documents continuing traditions and the artistic recognition achieved by Native American potters during the 20th century. The accompanying 336-page catalog, edited by art museum director Sherry Maurer (Rivermont parent), has entries by major scholars, Augustana faculty and administrators, as well as over 50 Augustana College student contributors. On Wednesday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Larson Hall there will be a discussion panel with five of the artists represented in the collection, and the following morning at 10:30 a.m. these artists will be demonstrating their work in a folk festival atmosphere. The morning finale will be a dance and drum demonstration by the Brown Otter Singers Song and Dance Group, Meskwaki. Augustana College Art Museum hours are noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, no admission charge. For more information contact 309-794-7231 during weekday hours or consult Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art Collection of Augustana College
