Back to School Night and BBQ
Dear
Rivermont Community, Back to School Night and the Welcome Back BBQ were a great
success! It was wonderful seeing so many families, children, friends and
relatives join us to kick off our 127th year. According to Chef June we served 450 meals at
last evening's BBQ. That is quite a
group! Everyone was able to eat although
the end of the line did get a bit rushed, our apologies. Mother Na ture gave us great weather so we
could enjoy our beautiful campus. As was evident from the presentations in the auditorium, the
tables in Central Hall and the visits to the classrooms, Rivermont is buzzing
with activity and opportunity. Students
and parents from preschool through grade twelve can be engaged and invigorated by
not only the curricular program but the co-curricular and extra-curricular programs
as well. Like last evening, it sometimes
feels like Rivermont never sleeps. Our 127th year promises many activities and
events in the arts, athletics, and social opportunities for students, parents,
and alumni. Service will continue to
figure prominently with our many service projects, the United Way Day of
Caring, Student Food Drive,
Shoes That Fit, and our own Rivermont Day of Caring when students K-12 will
descend on the Quad Cities to give back. With all this activity, we will strive to keep you informed
and up-to-date through HEADlines, the school's website and online calendar,
individual class newsletters and of course word of mouth. Share Rivermont activities with your friends,
relatives, and co-workers. The more the
merrier! Click on the following link to see a list of activities,
projects, and achievements that demonstrate how Rivermont lives its mission and
provides an exceptional learning and growing experience for its students and
the community at large. Rick St. LaurentHeadmaster |

Dans la classe de
français
Madame Fee's 5th grade French class welcomed Denton Tully of
Bettendorf and Arnaud De Canson from Toulons, France. Denton travelled to Provence this summer to spend time with his
friend Arnaud who then returned with him to the Quad-Cities to practice his
English. Denton shared his impressions as an
American and Arnaud shared what life was like in Southern
France. The two fifteen-year olds showed pictures of the Cote
d'Azur, Parisian monuments as well as French cars, the 2nd fastest
train in the world, le TGV! Fifth graders were able to ask questions and hear
Arnaud's authentic French accent! Merci, Denton et Arnaud, pour la visite!

From the Admission Corner
This summer on the Rivermont campus was a busy one and I am pleased to report that we are beginning the 2010-11 school year with a larger student body than 2009-10! Unfortunately, we did lose a number of Rivermont family members due to relocation, but we have gained some terrific new families! I truly appreciate the time our current families and students have taken to make the new members of the Rivermont community feel welcome. Healthy growth takes time and with our collective Rivermont "can do" spirit, our growth will continue!
We had an excellent New Family Orientation. Next year the event will be moved to Becherer Hall to allow more space! We were also very pleased with the Sixth Grade Parent Orientation; this is indeed a time of many changes in the life of a student and the faculty and advisors in the Rivermont Middle School do their best to smooth the transition. We hope parents got answers to their questions and valuable information and strategies for navigating the Middle School years. The highest percentage of our student population continues to be in Lower School; however, our Middle School has now surpassed the Upper School in enrollment! This is healthy growth!
The Quad City community continues to show sincere interest in Rivermont as Iowa's only PS-12th grade private, independent college-prep school. Rivermont responds to that interest throughout the year with admission activities and open houses to showcase our students and their work, our programs, and our facilities. We encourage Rivermont families to invite curious friends to Rivermont events. I extend a personal invitation to the Admission Office and am happy to speak with neighbors, friends, and business associates at any time. Remember that every first Tuesday of the month we host a drop-in Open House from 8:30-10:00 AM.
Thank you students, families, and faculty/staff for all your help in the growth of Rivermont!
With warmest regards and my best wishes for a terrific year,
Cindy Murray

Around the Quad Cities
Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art
CollectionDisplayed for the
first time as a whole, the 318-piece Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art
Collection of Augustana College introduces Southwest Pueblo art at a level
rarely found in the Midwest. Kent Olson (Augustana '61) and his wife Elaine
donated the collection to Augustana in 2004, with subsequent additions. Included
are 36 photogravures by Edward Curtis from his volume The Hopi. Dating from
pre-1600 to the present, the collection documents continuing traditions and the
artistic recognition achieved by Native American potters during the 20th
century. The accompanying 336-page catalog, edited by art museum director Sherry
Maurer (Rivermont parent), has entries by major scholars, Augustana faculty and
administrators, as well as over 50 Augustana College student contributors. On
Wednesday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Larson Hall there will be a discussion
panel with five of the artists represented in the collection, and the following
morning at 10:30 a.m. these artists will be demonstrating their work in a folk
festival atmosphere. The morning finale will be a dance and drum demonstration
by the Brown Otter Singers Song and Dance Group, Meskwaki. Augustana College Art
Museum hours are noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, no admission
charge. For more information contact 309-794-7231 during weekday hours or
