Dear Rivermont Community,

Nine months ago, we began the school year.  Was that really only nine months ago?  The year has been a full one and it is quickly reaching the end.

We combined our Welcome Back Picnic with Back to School Night and a new tradition was born, in spite of the rain.  In September we celebrated our 125th anniversary. Students stepped back in time to experience education in the late 1800's while parents, alumni, and friends gathered for a wonderful evening of song and good memories.

Academically, this was one of the strongest years in recent memory with science taking the lead.  A Siemens Competition semi-finalist, Grand Champion, Senior Division, EPA Award, and numerous top rankings at the state competition are hints of what we can expect from our Rivermont scientists as they pursue their science education.  History students gave science students a run for the money garnering 4 of the 24 spots Iowa students will hold at the National History Day competition.  ITBS composite scores in the 99th percentile, 72% of grades 3-5 qualifying for the BESTS program, and our 5th consecutive top rank on the Iowa AP Index demonstrates the strength, depth, and challenge of Rivermont's curriculum.  100% college acceptance and significant merit scholarship awards illustrate the value placed by colleges on the preparation and achievements of our graduates.

The Student Food Drive, Shoes That Fit, United Way Day of Caring, Haiti Disaster Relief, and our own Rivermont Day of Service demonstrated our student and School commitment to our local, national and global communities.  NAIS Project 20/20 partnered our Fifth Graders with students in West Virginia and Guatemala to try and tackle the problem of providing education for all. These and many other projects encourage and guide our students to take responsibility and become involved in their communities.

Play productions, art exhibits, musical concerts, festivals and in-class activities confirmed that creativity is infused throughout the school in all areas and at all levels.  Hardly a week has passed without an example of just how really creative and talented Rivermont students are.

The economy has touched everyone including the School.  Each of us had to prioritize and economize.  Budgets were trimmed and teachers and staff took on additional duties while ensuring that the strength of our program remained intact.  The generosity of our families, staff, alumni and friends through the Annual Fund and our Auction have helped to bridge the gap between the actual cost of a Rivermont education and the tuition collected.  The tremendous generosity of an alumna who remembered the School will encourage and reward academic excellence with 2 scholarships and subsidize other programs annually.

These are but a few of the highlights that underscored the vitality of the Rivermont community.  We continue to be an important institution in the educational landscape of the Quad Cities offering a 126 year tradition of excellence.

Nine months of intellect, character, and creativity.  Nine months where there were no spectators, only participants.  Enjoy the summer because come August the participation begins again!

Working to support our community

Serving lunch, unloading boxes, and sorting clothes - oh, my!  The Rivermont sixth grade class volunteered at Café on Vine in Davenport on Friday, May 21st.  Students spent a few hours assisting with lunch for the homeless and disadvantaged, as well as various other duties to help keep Café on Vine running smoothly.  Not only did students have a lot of fun, but felt a great sense of accomplishment and inquired about a return trip next year - which will definitely be added to the calendar!  Special thanks go out to parent volunteers Tina Eckhardt, Laurie Elliott, and Brian McVey, as well as to event coordinators Carrie Bowman and Cristy Tackett-Hunt.  We look forward to visiting Café on Vine again next year!
A Fond Farewell
Best wishes to our departing faculty

Faculty and students gathered Wednesday morning to bid farewell to three teachers who will be leaving at the end of the school year.  Physical Education teacher Shannon Warlop will be moving to North Carolina where her husband's work has taken him.  Third Grade teacher Catherine Carr and her family will be joining her husband who has taken a new parish in Ohio.  We wish them much success and happiness in their new homes.

After 22 years teaching Second Grade at Rivermont, Margy Dobbelaere will retire at the end of this year.  A special celebration was held on Sunday, May 16 for family, friends, and collegues to honor Mrs. Dobbelaere and reminisce.  Wednesday morning the Lower School Student Council presented Mrs. Dobbelaere with a gift while the School presented her with a framed copy of her retirement announcement and bookplate that will grace the many books donated to our Library in her honor.

Thank you Mrs. Dobbelaere for 22 years of dedicated service to the students and families of Rivermont Collegiate.  You touched countless lives during your time here, sharing not only your love of books, but providing your students the knowledge for success and the confidence to use it.

Cultural Notes from Third Grade

The Third grade class continues to have exciting cultural experiences.  Recently the families of Ellie Decker, Lauren Schroeder, Evan Didelot, and Niki Joshi came in to visit the class.  Ellie's parents told deckerabout how her family members have been in the Quad City area for many years.  Her family originally owned the store that was sold to the Von Maur family. They brought big pretzels to share with the class to celebrate their German heritage.  Lauren's mother toldschroeder the students about many of their family traditions including the German tradition of St. Nicholas.  Each child found a shoe full of goodies in front of the classroodidelotm door one morning.  Evan's mother told us about his adoption from Korea. joshi She brought in things from their trips to Korea.  They also used to live in China.  She brought cookies to share with the class.   Niki's mother told the class about India. Niki danced a traditional dance.  Her mother brought matai and mango ice cream to share with the class.

Class of 2010 - 123rd Commencement
The Day We Have All Been Working Toward

Friday, June 4, marks the culmination of the year.  Seniors will gather with faculty, family and other guests to present their Senior Projects and answer questions from the audience.  Seniors have been called upon in a similar manner since the first graduating class in 1888.  Senior Presentations will begin at 10:00 AM in the auditorium.  Guests are invited to join us.

At 4:00 PM, to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, the senior class will walk out to the south lawn of the Mansion for the 123rd Commencement Exercises.  Two of our seniors will be  recognized as members of the Heritage Club or "lifers" who have attended our school since Kindergarten.  Everyone is invited to participate in this special ceremony.

Graduation is an important event and marks the culmination of the Rivermont Experience.  We are proud of our graduates' accomplishments and wish them happiness and success as they begin the next phase of their academic lives and take on the responsibilities of adult participants in their communities.
