Today, nearly all 8 ½ acres of our campus became the outdoor classroom for Rivermont. In honor of Earth Day Lower School Director Sue Johnson and science teachers Linda Hampton and Carey DeWitt organized activities and projects for the day. Early School students planted flowers and made biodegradable plastic. Mrs. Ashby's 4th graders introduced the Junior Kindergarten class to the Energy Hog website (www.energyhog.org) and played games and activities teaching them to reduce, reuse and recycle.  Students in K-2nd grade made bird feeders with ice cream cones, peanut butter and seeds and went on a scavenger hunt while 3rd through 12th grades worked in mixed age groups to find the proper coordinates using GPS units. Our science teachers created a geocache exercise for our budding scientists. They learned to operate and read GPS units on loan from the Scott County Extension Service, fine turn their math skills as they calculated distances, and of course figured out the difference between north, south, east, and west. Upper Schoolers learned quickly that their younger group mates were quite valuable when looking under bushes or squeezing into small spaces. Each member of the group, young or old, offered important talents to accomplishing this project. Members of the faculty supervising the roads and hills also got to work on their tans.
The object of the activity was to locate 10 camouflage eggs with colored number squares that corresponded to puzzle pieces. The first group to complete their puzzle won. The hidden messages in the puzzles underscored the importance of the day and everyone celebrated with a cup of dirt and worms (chocolate pudding, Oreos and Gummi worms)!

Learning happens in many ways and today we not only learned about the science behind our automobile navigation systems but we learned to work together, take care of each other, and have fun together. No spectators today, definitely everyone was a participant!

Concordia Language Camp Trip
A great big thanks to faculty and parents Dana Fee, Sean Goodman, Tom Heaney, Cindy Mayfield, Tracy Paxton, and Dara Wegman-Geedy for chaperoning the French and Spanish students to the Concordia Language Weekend in Bemidji, MN. Twenty-six students ranging from grades 3-6 participated in a rich immersion experience complete with passports, authentic food, songs, dances, sports and other engaging activities. On Friday we were able to stop at the Science Museum in St. Paul for an exciting excursion and watch Arabia in the Omnimax theater. Students formed new friendships, learned more French and Spanish while creating long-lasting memories.

Do you want your child to be fluent in another language? Try Concordia Language Village Summer Camps where you can participate in a rich immersion experience. Programs are available for students of all ages as well as families. Concordia offers great summer programs for 1-2 weeks or even 4 week sessions for high school credit. Concordia summer programs offer a variety of languages from Finnish, Japanese to Portuguese, and of course, French and Spanish!

Hero of Planet Earth Award
Sixth grader Marta Storl Desmond, Eighth grader Shravya Pothula, and sophomore Meghana Pagadala have received the HOPE Award  (Hero of Planet Earth Award) for their environmental science projects at the State Science Fair that was held in Ames this past March.

The goal of the National Environmental Science Fair is to help take student projects to the next level. These girls are creating 4-page features that will be part of a book. They also have an opportunity to create a blog, as well as a YouTube video about their projects. Once their 4-page feature is in the book, they will be inducted into our local Community Environmental Hall of Fame. Upon creating a blog, they will be inducted into the State Environmental Hall of Fame. After creating  a video, they may be inducted into the National Environmental Hall of Fame.  Congratulations!

Rare 1980 Cabriolet Cadillac Convertible!
Donor: Steve Pray

Rivermont Collegiate Auction 1995 - Tim Wilkinson, an Alcoa emissary donated a 1980 white Cadillac Cabriolet Convertibcadillacle to Rivermont for its annual fundraiser. With only 20,000 miles it was purchased by Tom Waterman for his dad, Bob, as the perfect beach car for his winter home in Naples, Florida. Upon Bob's death the car again found its way back to Rivermont to be purchased by Steve Pracadillac interiory for his father-in-law, Mel Foster, as a remembrance of the friendship between Mel and Bob. The classic is back! With only 46,000 miles on it the rare convertible will once again make an appearance at this year's fundraiser to be held May 1, 2010 at Crow Valley Golf Club. The car will be available for viewing at Rivermont (dates to be announced) as well as the night of the event.

This car is a classic and difficult to find!  One was recently sold on EBay for $18,500!  This is an opportunity not to be missed!

The Rivermont Experience

Masked Ball
Saturday, April 17, Upper Schoolers dressed to the nines boarded their motorcoach for this year's prom. Everyone enjoyed an evening of dancing and desserts at Quarters One on Arseprom motorcoachnal Island. The motorcoach then whisked the partygoers back to the Mansion for an AfterProm of basketball, video games, movies, and Senora Week's famous bean dip. Mrs. Pokora and Mrs. Warlop provided comic relief for the evechloe tiaraning and performed House Mother duties.

chloe dress
Unfortunately senior Chloe Hall was unable to attend the festivities due to illness so the junior girls arranged a Morp during Monday's advisory period. This year, Rivermont enjoyed 2 proms for the price of one with Chloe crowned this year's Prom Queen!
