Rivermont Haiti Relief Day
Students show their care and concernNHS Logo

Monday's Haitian Relief Day was an excellent opportunity for Rivermont students of all ages to come together and raise money for a worthy cause-plus it was a ton of fun! Students and faculty, dressed in red, were excited to help and take part in the dodge ball tournament; nearly all the Middle and Upper School students participated with 13 teams in the event. Early School children were jumping out of their seats for every victory while the Middle and Upper School students cheered on their friends with each throw of the ball. Many games ended in "open season", a nail biter with only one team member fighting to win.  Thanks to the student, faculty, and staff support, NHS Partners in Education dodge ball tournament was a huge success with NHS raising $215 from the tournament alone.

Beautiful Sounds

The QC Symphony, Handel Oratorio Society, Quad City Choral Arts and QC Symphony Youth Choir will present concerts this weekend featuring works by Mozart, Handel and Carl Orff.  Rivermont's own faculty, Mrs. Leigh Ann Schroeder and Mrs. Sally Schulz, along with 7th grade student Loring Telleen will be participating in the choral ensembles.  Performances will be Saturday, February 6 at 8 PM in the Adler Theatre in Davenport and Sunday, February 7, at 2 PM in Centennial Hall, Rock Island.  Tickets may be purchased on location before each concert or at 800-745-300, www.QCSymphony.com and at all Ticketmaster outlets.  Ticket prices range from $10-$50, with a $7 student ticket.

State Swimmer
Kudos to fourth grader, Perapa Chotiprasidhi, for earning a position in the Iowa State Swimming Championship Short Course. Perapa competes in Iowa City on February 26-28th in the 50 yard freestyle and backstroke category for children age ten and under. Congratulations and good luck, Perapa!!

Good bye, Mr. Jim,
With special thanks for all his contributions to Rivermont Collegiate, and with many warm wishes for a very happy retirement, we would like to wish Jim Danielson, our school bus driver, a very happy (and deserved) retirement on Friday, February 12th.  Mr. Jim kept our school bus in pristine condition, both inside and out; and he could always be counted on for his warm smile and quick wit. The afternoon bus riders especially want to thank Mr. Jim for generously bringing them special treats. Mr. Jim joined the Rivermont staff in January 2008, after his retirement from the sprinkler fitting industry. Most people are unaware that Mr. Jim actually installed the sprinkler system in Becherer hall!

Mr. Jim's shoes will be very hard to fill, but the search is underway for a new bus driver. Please contact the School if you know someone who may be interested.  (A class C-CDL license is required for this position.)

Swim - Swim - Swim

Fourth grader Aviana  Zahara participated in the swim clinic with Olympic Gold Medalist Aaron Peirsol and Olympic Gold Medalist Josh Davis, Saturday, January 30th at the Augustana College Pool.

In addition, Aviana qualified to represent the Moline Blue Marlins swim team at the Regional competition in Naperville, Illinois on February 27 & 28.  The Marlins are part of the US Swim team.  Aviana qualified with a 50 freestyle time of 32.89 seconds.  She obtained a time of 28.69 seconds in her 50 freestyle during her 200 IM Relay Medley which is a State qualifying time for Illinois.  She has been working very hard to obtain a Regional and State qualifying time for the girls 10 and under freestyle competition.

Hayes

Resourceful and Creative

As groups donated funds to assist Haiti, Second Grader, Hayes Murphy, decided to help. He likes to draw. He drew pictures in his small sketch book and sold them to friends to earn money for Haiti. Monday, Hayes added his total of $105.79 to the Rivermont Haiti fund.

Saturday Basketball
The final Saturday of Rivermont Youth Basketball is February 6.  All Saturday basketball participants are invited to the home varsity basketball games on Friday, February 12.  The girls' game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. followed by the boys' game at 7:30 p.m.  Our youth players will have an opportunity to take the court at halftime of the girls' game to demonstrate their amazing hoops skills.

Parents' Night
The athletic department will recognize the winter sports parents at the home boys' varsity basketball game this Monday, February 8.  The game is at 7:00 p.m. versus Olin.  At halftime, we will introduce the parents of our varsity cheerleaders and the varsity boys' and girls' basketball players.  We would also invite all of our middle school student-athletes and parents to attend this special night.

Senior Night
We will honor our senior cheerleader, Chloe Hall, and basketball player, Victor Mbakwe prior to the boys' game on Friday, February 12.  The girls will play Unity Christian at 6:00 p.m. and the boys' game against Unity Christian will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.  This will be the final home game for both of these student leaders.

Iowa High School District Basketball Tournament
The Rivermont Boys' Basketball Team, in light of their recent successes on the court, have earned a higher seeding in this year's district tournament and will play their opening game on Thursday, February 18 at Calamus-Wheatland at 7:00 p.m.  This replaces the February 15th date on our original schedule.  If the Lions advance past Cal-Wheat, they will play on Tuesday, February 23 against the winner of the Midland-Morning Star game.  The site for that game will be determined later.  The District Final will be on Thursday, February 25 at Maquoketa.  Good luck to Coach Dave Wessel and the Lions!

Lion Head
From the Admissions Office

The office has been busy with families visiting our campus during the 2009-10 school year!  Families continue to display sincere interest in our school and I would like to thank members of the Rivermont community for your referrals.  We are a school to be showcased, and it has been my pleasure to introduce visitors to Rivermont.

I conduct a number of events throughout the year to bring local families to our campus and introduce them to our school.  Open Tours are held the first Tuesday of every month, from 8:30-10:00 a.m.  This is a time for anyone to drop in without an appointment, ask questions, take a campus tour, and witness our faculty in action.  In addition, the Young Scholars Program is held the first Thursday of every month from 9:00-10:00 a.m.  This is a time for local families with children ages 2-4 to spend time in our PreSchool classroom with our current students and Mrs. Hauser, participating in storytime, crafts, and other activities.  During this time parents are invited to visit with me, ask questions and tour our campus.  I also host several evening open houses throughout the year.  In addition, this winter we held six Saturday Fun at Rivermont events, inviting local families with early school age children to join us for an hour of games, stories, and snacks with our current PreSchool and Junior Kindergarten students.

Upcoming events include the Academic Fair on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 6:00 p.m. I invite new applicants and members of the community to this event to view our students' work and I am available to provide tours and answer questions as well.  The Kindergarten Round-Up Brown Bag Lunch will be Thursday, Feb. 25th from 11:30-1:00 p.m.  Students enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2010-11 academic year and their parents are invited to see the classroom, meet Mrs. Corrigan, and learn more about Kindergarten at Rivermont.  This event is also open to any families who are not yet enrolled, but interested in Kindergarten at Rivermont.  The First Grade No Erasers! Info Night will be held Tuesday, March 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the first grade classroom.  Local families are invited to join current Rivermont families to discuss Mrs. Topalian's "No Erasers" approach to early learning.  I will be on hand to answer questions and provide tours to visiting families. In addition to the forementioned, I distribute free passes to our visiting families to our sporting events, musicals, and plays to check out our Rivermont pride!

I encourage you to share information about these events with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.  I am always happy to answer questions and meet with potential families.  As a reminder, I am also happy to meet interested friends and/or business associates in homes or work places.I thank you again for all you provide to our school and our students - the magic of Rivermont lies in the talent and dedication of our parents and faculty!

Pancake Tuesday
A tradition from our St. Katharine's days

Pancake Tuesday is a cherished tradition at Rivermont.  Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnaval in Brazil mark the end of a mardi grasseason of celebration and excess before the lean days of Lent.  For many years, a pancake luncheon was served on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) to students and staff.  Rivermont Parents' Council volunteers from the Third Grade will be cooking and serving the traditional pancake lunch for the students and staff.  Pancakes & Sausage will be the featured entrĂ©e along with the usual alternatives (PB&J, yogurt, fruit, etc.)  Students may bring cash or charge lunch to their account.

As always, sack lunches are OK.

According to tradition,

a surprise trinket is hidden in each pancake!

If you find a penny, you will have good luck.

If you find a nickel, you will be rich.

If you find a ring, you will be the first to marry.

If you find a button, you will be a tailor/fashion designer.

If you find a safety pin, you will have a large family.

If you find a paper clip, you will be a success in business.

Since the actual date of Mardi Gras is during our Winter Break, we will be celebrating Pancake Tuesday one week early on February 9
