Dear Rivermont Community,
Schools like Rivermont, small, independent schools, provide a unique environment for their students, faculty, and even their parents. The environment is naturally inclusive since we depend on each other to provide the curriculum and activities we offer. There is no room to stand on the sidelines, everyone's contribution is important. This interdependence challenges each of us to try new things and often to put the needs of others ahead of our own. This also provides many opportunities for leadership. Although the rosters of many clubs, teams and activities have similar names the organizers and promoters are spread far and wide.
Opportunities give students experiences that deepen their understanding, broaden their interests, and develop their character. This past Wednesday, our Upper Schoolers participated in the United Way Day of caring. Not just the Honor Society, not just a select few, but each and every student in the Upper School. They were at the Figge Museum,
CASI, Handicapped
Development Center,
Central Community Circle Neighborhood, and Skip-A-Long Child Development Services. Students and their teachers worked with all ages providing all types of service. This opportunity teaches students about their community, about themselves, and most especially how they can influence the world around them - that their singular, sometimes small acts, can have enormous consequences for the people they touch. As a matter of fact, it is because of the involvement of our Upper Schoolers in this event that the K-12 Rivermont students and teachers now have their own Day of Caring when everyone goes out into the community to lend a hand. Imagine that, the whole school!
Every student at Rivermont not only has the opportunity, but indeed DOES great things!
Rick St. Laurent, Headmaster

representatives of the school were extremely grateful for the kindness and
generosity shown by our families. Thanks for demonstrating Rivermont's caring and connecting to the community!

Pancake Tuesday
A tradition from our St. Katharine's days
Pancake Tuesday is a cherished tradition at
Rivermont. Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnaval in Brazil mark the end of a season of
celebration and excess before the lean days of Lent. For many years, a pancake luncheon was served on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) to students and staff. Today, Rivermont Parents' Council volunteers from the Third Grade
will be cooking and serving the traditional pancake lunch for the students and staff. Pancakes & Sausage will be the featured
entrée along with the usual alternatives (PB&J, yogurt, fruit, etc.) Students may bring cash or charge lunch to
their account.
As always, sack lunches
are OK.
According to tradition,
a surprise trinket is hidden in each pancake!
If you find a penny, you will have good luck.
If you find a nickel, you will be rich.
If you find a ring, you will be the first to marry.
If you find a button, you will be a tailor/fashion designer.
If you find a safety pin, you will have a large family.
If you find a paper clip, you will be a success in business.
Since the actual date of Mardi Gras is during our Winter Break, we will be celebrating Pancake Tuesday one week early on February 9
