Dear Rivermont Community,
Mother Nature and MLK, Jr. Day teamed up to give us a short week this week; 2 days. Everyone seemed pleased to get back into the swing of this this morning. A day off is nice but how much hot chocolate, Wii, good books, naps, playing with the dog, and daydreaming can a person take? OK, I must admit, quite a bit but now it is time to get back to reality and get some work done.
Did you know there are 21 days until Academic Fair? This is one of Rivermont's special and unique events. Students in Grades 2-11 have been diving into a wide variety of topics and ideas and will share their research and experiences in science, geneology, biography, history, US states, Native Americans, original inventions and service learning. The fun begins on Tuesday, February 9 when the juniors make presentations on their service learning projects to a panel of QC community members. The excitement will culminate on Thursday, February 11 at 6:00 PM when students gather in the gym and auditorium to share their projects with everyone. Imagine a second grader explaining how her invention solves a problem in everyday life. Listen to a seventh grader become someone who has influenced them in a living biography. Hear a fifth grader share the struggles and joys of his ancestors as they crossed the Atlantic and then the Great Plains to make a better life for themselves. The stories go on. Come see and hear for yourself the extraordinary things our students can do.

Haiti Needs Our Help
Cash donations provide most flexible and effective support
The tragedy of the recent earthquake in Haiti leaves many speechless. The magnitude of the destruction, the lack of supplies and infrastructure, and the sheer human toll defies our understanding. Our chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) developed Partners in Education several years ago and has sponsored a Haitian school and two of last year's seniors went to Haiti for their Senior Project. This tragedy touches Rivermont.
Student groups at Rivermont have been meeting and planning fund raising activities to provide aid. NHS has placed water jugs in the Mansion and Becherer Hall to receive loose change, dollar bills, and even checks. Proceeds will go to the Red Cross and the GHESKIO Clinic in Port-Au-Prince. Rivermont has a direct contact with the clinic through its Partners in Education outreach. Several other projects will take place over the next few weeks so please check the website and ask your students for details. Please respond generously!

School Delays and Closings
Consider weather conditions in your area
Rivermont students
come from numerous cities and towns in the area. The decision concerning school
closing or delay is normally based on accessibility to the campus and is most
often made by 6:15 a.m. Parents should judge for themselves whether travel is
safe from their particular locale.
Notice of school closing or delay is made in the
following areas. It is wise to consult 2 or more of the areas as some venues
experience technical problems in delivering
information.
1.
Call the school
563-359-1366. The
automated attendant is updated to announce if the School is closed or there is a
delay.
2.
Check email. An email will be sent to all Rivermont
families who have provided updated email addresses to the
School.
