Dear Rivermont Community,

Happy New Year to everyone!  The holiday break was great however the frigid temperatures could have been less so.

Second semester has gotten off to a great start and report cards will go out today.  Lower School students will bring them home in their backpacks while the Middle and Upper School report cards will be mailed.

This semester we will take yet another step in the world of technology as we provide parents and students online access to their unofficial grades.  Thanks in part to a grant from the Parents' Council, Rivermont has purchased the FOCUS Student Information System.  The faculty and staff have been learning how to use this new tool and it has improved efficiency and accuracy.  At present, the system is only available for students in grades 3-12.  Individual letters with acceptable use information and instructions have been mailed home.  We are still learning and adjusting to the new system so please be patient with us.

We have been informed by the Scott County Health Department that they will hold an H1N1 Clinic for our students and staff in early February.  Only the injection vaccine will be available.  We will notify you when we are given a specific date.

Along with the report cards that will be coming home by stuent in the Lower School and by mail in the Middle and Upper Schools you will find a letter from the Health Department, What You Need to Know handout, and a consent form.  Please take the time to read through this very important information.  (Please disregard the dates mentioned in the Department's letter as they are not correct.)

Please complete the consent form and return it to the School before Friday, January 15.  If you do not wish your child to participate in the Rivermont H1N1 Vaccine Clinic write her or his name only on the form and draw an X through the form and return to School.  This will let us know that all families have received the information and have made a decision.

I would also like to remind you that you and your children may also receive the H1N1 vaccine from your family physician.

We have been fortunate not to have been as seriously affected at Rivermont as some other Quad City schools.  Good hygiene and staying home when illness strikes continue to be strongly recommended.

Here's to weathering the next wave (if it hits),

Children in Need
Check those closets

As winter sets in and temperatures drop let's take some time to think of children who do not have clothes to keep them warm. Parents' Council has become aware of a middle school (grades 5 - 8), in East Moline where many families are struggling to clothe their children.  We would like to ask Rivermont families to take some time over the holiday break to go through 'gently-used' winter clothes that children have outgrown and donate them to children in need.

Donations can be dropped off in Becherer Hall the first week after the holiday break, January 4 - 8, 2010. Parents' Council volunteers will sort through the clothing and deliver it to the school. If you have any questions please contact: Gillian Lederman, 563 332 2323, glederman1@mchsi.com

School Delays and Closings
Consider weather conditions in your area

Rivermont students come from numerous cities and towns in the area. The decision concerning school closing or delay is normally based on accessibility to the campus and is most often made by 6:15 a.m. Parents should judge for themselves whether travel is safe from their particular locale.

Notice of school closing or delay is made in the following areas. It is wise to consult 2 or more of the areas as some venues experience technical problems in delivering information.

1.       Call the school 563-359-1366.  The automated attendant is updated
to announce if the School is closed or there is a delay.
2.       Check email.  An email will be sent to all Rivermont families who
have provided updated email addresses to the School.
3.       Check the Rivermont website, www.rvmt.org

Intellect - Character - Creativity

Emily Goodman, grade 4, earned a position on Team Iowa, the swim team representing Iowa at the Midwest all-Star Invitational Swim Meet in Lawrence, Kansas on January 16th & 17th.  She is one of ten young swimmers from Iowa in competition with athletes from all over the Midwest. Emily swims for the Pleasant Valley Stingrays and will compete in the 200 Free Style in this competition.  Congratulations and Good Luck Emily!

Rivermont's chapter of the National Honor Society was able to purchase 12 toys to donate to Toys for Tots from their recent holiday fundraiser.  Special thanks to junior Archana Chintalapani for doing all the shopping!

Nice work NHS!

The Parents' Council is awesome!  When our librarian (and JrK teacher) Shalar Brown worked at the Iowa City Public Library there was a giant Clifford at the entrance to the Children's Room. Kids loved him so much.  Now, thanks to the Parents' Council Rivermont has one too!  Thanks to the profit resulting from the Scholastic Book Fair our library also received hundreds of dollars worth of books. Thank You Parents' Council for your good work!

Crazy Hat & Sock Day!
Tuesday, February 12, 2010crazy hat

In honor of Alumna, former Trustee, Parent, and Grandparent Mary Waterman Gildehaus '65 the Fifth Grade is sponsoring a Crazy Hat and Sock Day on Tuesday, January 12.

Mary recently lost a brave battle against cancer and Rivermont lost a true friend.  Known for visiting campus and working on the grounds in crazy hats and socks, it seems fitting for us to honor and remember Mary in this way.  All proceedcrazy sockss will help purchase a stone bench in her honor to be placed in the Alumni Garden.

50¢ to wear crazy socks or hat to school.

$1.00 to wear both!

H1N1 Vaccination Update
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.

We have been informed by the Scott County Health Department that they will be at Rivermont in early February to vaccinate K-12 students and staff.  (Early School students were vaccinated before the Holiday Break.)  The specific date of the clinic is not yet known however you will be notified as soon as the School is given a date.  The consent forms from the Health Department have been sent home with student report cards.

If you would like to have your child vaccinated earlier, you may contact your family physician to schedule an appointment or contact the Health Department at 4th and Gaines by calling 326-8618.

The IMPS know their stuff
Imps 145 - Tigers 132 in Geography Trivia Contest!imp

There was a buzz in the Cafeteria Thursday as students from grades 4-8 sat in cross-grade groups to test their geography knowledge.  Teams answered questions about people, the United States, world countries, the environment, physical geography, and current events.  Some were easy and some were tough!  Students learned that reading the newspaper and watching the news pays off.

The Tigers started strong but the Imps persevered and in the end took the lead.  Way to go IMPS!
