Dear Rivermont Community,
Amid the hustle and bustle of the season it is important for
each of us to take a moment not only to enjoy but to appreciate the people
around us. Our students continue to
impress us as they grow in intellect, character, and creativity. Their generosity of spirit was seen in the Student Food Drive
and Shoes That Fit as well as in the many projects undertaken by classes,
groups of classes and even individuals.
We experience, on a daily basis, their inquiring minds in questions that
cause one to pause and reflect, their confidence as they speak and perform
before groups of students and parents, and their creative and divergent
thinking as they tackle problems and situations from many points of view.
We have celebrated our 125th Anniversary and have
enjoyed record percentages in re-enrollment.
This has truly been a wonderful semester.
Best wishes for a safe and restful holiday season.
Happy Hanukkah!
Merry Christmas!
Happy Kwanzaa!
and Happy New Year!

School Delays and Closings
Consider weather conditions in your area
Rivermont students
come from numerous cities and towns in the area. The decision concerning school
closing or delay is normally based on accessibility to the campus and is most
often made by 6:15 a.m. Parents should judge for themselves whether travel is
safe from their particular locale.
Notice of school closing or delay is made in the
following areas. It is wise to consult 2 or more of the areas as some venues
experience technical problems in delivering
information.
1.
Call the school
563-359-1366. The
automated attendant is updated to announce if the School is closed or there is a
delay.
2.
Check email. An email will be sent to all Rivermont
families who have provided updated email addresses to the
School.
3.
Check the Rivermont website, www.rvmt.org

After School Care
Goodbye Abbie, Welcome Kate!
This week students in After School Care said goodbye to Abbie Black, child care supervisor for the past three years. Abbie is completing her combination Bachelor-Master degree in occupational therapy at St. Ambrose University and is moving to Portland, Oregon to complete her intern experience. We will all miss Miss Abbie and the fun times we had playing Uno and Sorry.
Kate St. Laurent is taking over for Abbie as After School Care supervisor. Kate is a 2009 graduate of Lake Forest College. Many primary grade students may remember Miss Kate because she taught sign language and assisted in Early School classrooms.

Children in Need
Check those closets
As winter sets in and temperatures drop let's take some time
to think of children who do not have clothes to keep them warm. Parents'
Council has become aware of a middle school (grades 5 - 8), in East Moline where many families are
struggling to clothe their children. We
would like to ask Rivermont families to take some time over the holiday break
to go through 'gently-used' winter clothes that
children have outgrown and donate them to children in need.
Donations can be dropped off in Becherer Hall the first week
after the holiday break, January 4 - 8,
2010. Parents' Council volunteers will sort through the clothing and
deliver it to the school. If you have any questions please contact: Gillian
Lederman, 563 332 2323, [email protected]

H1N1 Vaccination Update
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.
We have
been informed by the Scott County Health Department that they will be in the
schools after the New Year to vaccinate K-12 students and staff.
As soon as we receive permission forms from the Health Department we will send
them home and let you know the date of the clinic as soon as we are informed.
If
you would like to have your child vaccinated earlier, you may schedule an
appointment at the Health Department at 4th and Gaines by calling 326-8618. You may also
attend one of the public walk-in clinics offered. Locations and times are posted on the Scott County Health Department website and announced in the local media. (Rock Island is also hosting walk-in clinics for all Quad Citians.)
You
therefore have 3 choices:
- call and make an appointment at the
Health Department,
- go to a public walk-in clinic,
- wait for the clinic at Rivermont.

4th & 5th Grades take over BizTown
How does the community work?
On Tuesday, the 4th and
5th grade classes participated in the Junior Achievement Biz Town simulation. During the three month
training process, students learned how to write checks, make deposits, run a
business, how the free-enterprise system functions and how to be good and
productive citizens. Students accomplished many goals yesterday, including
paying off business costs and purchasing objects with the salary they earned.
The Newspaper (run by Rivermont students) achieved the distinction of business
of the day. JA volunteers were impressed with the knowledge and behavior of our
students. They should be proud of themselves. They made Mrs. Ashby and Mrs.
Schroeder very proud.
Sophia Xiao - "I liked how I learned
how it feels to have a job and feel like a grown up. The feeling made me proud
and the work was fun."
Naina Ninan - "I liked how we worked
together to make enough money to pay the bank loan. I loved how we made the
customers happy."

Merry Christmas
Christmas is
an annual holiday that marks the traditional birthdate of Jesus of Nazareth.
Christmas combines Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus with various
secular traditions and customs, many of which were influenced by ancient winter
festivals such as Yule and Saturnalia. Christmas traditions include Nativity
scenes and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of
Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of
goodwill, giving, compassion, and quality family time. Christmas is traditionally on December 25. It
is preceded by Christmas Eve and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day.
Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which
corresponds to December 25 of the Julian calendar. These dates are traditional
and many scholars do not consider either to be the actual birthdate of Jesus.
Christmas is celebrated in most countries around the world,
owing to the spread of Christianity and Western culture, mixed with the
enduring popularity of existing winter celebrations. Various local and regional
Christmas traditions are still practiced, despite the widespread influence of
American and British Christmas motifs disseminated by film, popular literature,
television, and other media.

Happy Kwanzaa Habari gani?
Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which
celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from 26 December thru 1
January, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa
from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase
"matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili,
a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language. Kwanzaa was created to
introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute
to building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African
American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community.
These values are called the Nguzo Saba which in Swahili means the Seven
Principles. Developed by Dr. Karenga, the Nguzo Saba stand at the heart of the
origin and meaning of Kwanzaa, for it is these values which are not only the
building blocks for community but also serve to reinforce and enhance them.
First, a central place in the home for the Kwanzaa Set, the symbols of Kwanzaa
is chosen. A table is then spread with a beautiful piece of African cloth.
Then, the mkeka (mat) is placed
down and all of the other symbols are placed on it or immediately next to it to
symbolize our rootedness in our tradition. Next the Kinara (candle holder) is placed on the mat and the Mishumaa Saba (seven candles) are
placed in the kinara (candle holder). The
colors of Kwanzaa are black, red and green; black for the people, red for their struggle, and green for the future
and hope that comes from their struggle.
