RIVERMONT COLLEGIATE 1821 Sunset Drive Bettendorf, IA 52722

Dear Rivermont Community,
Congratulations! Our school community has once again demonstrated its commitment to developing intellect, character, and creativity in our students. Shoes That Fit is a local outreach program that provides shoes for Quad City school children who cannot afford "shoes that fit." Inspired by accounts of children wearing shoes too small their toes actually curled under while others used duct tape to keep their shoes intact, a group of volunteers organized through OnMedia solicit donations of new shoes and deliver them to children in area schools. Rivermont learned that some requests had not been filled so after collecting cans for the Student Hunger Drive our students quickly took on the challenge of buying 50 new pairs of shoes ... in the first day of the drive. We committed to another 30 pair and those too were quickly filled. Students however were quick to point out that if kids need shoes, they must also need boots so they began collecting money to buy boots. It turned out that coats were in greater demand. In the end, we delivered 85 new pair of shoes and we collected enough money to purchase 38 coats to keep children warm. Character and creativity in action!
While our popular culture celebrates self-satisfaction and instant- gratification Rivermont students stand out (and their families too) in their concern for others and their willingness to give to the community. Rivermont actively participates in the local community. Seven different Quad City schools are warmer this winter because our students and community count character as an essential part of a Rivermont education.
Special thanks to Vicki Wallace for making us aware o f the need and for being the liaison and delivery person. Also, a big thank you to Tammi Burrell for keeping us organized and for doing much of the shopping. And finally, thank you to all the Rivermont students, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, friends, and relatives who made it possible to have "shoes that fit!"
Rick St. Laurent, Headmaster

School Delays and Closings
Consider weather conditions in your area
Rivermont students
come from numerous cities and towns in the area. The decision concerning school
closing or delay is normally based on accessibility to the campus and is most
often made by 6:15 a.m. Parents should judge for themselves whether travel is
safe from their particular locale.
Notice of school closing or delay is made in the
following areas. It is wise to consult 2 or more of the areas as some venues
experience technical problems in delivering
information.
1.
Call the school
563-359-1366. The
automated attendant is updated to announce if the School is closed or there is a
delay.
2.
Check email. An email will be sent to all Rivermont
families who have provided updated email addresses to the
School.
3.

When East meets West Freshman Kelsey Qu gave a wonderful recital this past Sunday at Wallenberg Hall at Augustan College. Kelsey's Sixth Grade brother Harrison performed with Kelsey in several pieces. Bravo!
On the stage! Rivermont parents Marvin (writer) & Karen (director & performer) Roebuck presented an uplifting multicultural production, Gold, Frankincense, & Myrrh at the Capitol Theatre December 5 and 6. Alum Marvina Roebuck assisted with the production and junior Wes Julien played the drums.

Happy Chanukah
Light over darkness
Chanukah --
the eight-day festival of light
that begins on the eve of Kislev 25 -- celebrates the triumph of light over darkness,
of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality.
More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled
by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel.
Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews defeated one of the mightiest
armies on earth, drove the Greeks from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple
in Jerusalem and
rededicated it to the service of
G-d.
When they sought to light the Temple's menorah, they found only a single cruse of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks; miraculously, the one-day supply
burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.
To commemorate and publicize
these miracles, the sages instituted the festival of Chanukah. At the
heart of the festival is the nightly
menorah lighting: a single flame
on the first night, two on the second evening, and so on till the eighth night
of Chanukah, when all eight lights
are kindled.
On Chanukah we also recite Hallel
and the Al HaNissim prayer to offer praise and
thanksgiving to G-d for
"delivering the strong into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few... the wicked into the hands of the righteous."
Chanukah customs include eating foods fried in oil -- latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (doughnuts); playing with
the dreidel (a spinning top on which are inscribed the Hebrew letters nun,
gimmel, hei
and shin, an acronym for Nes Gadol Hayah
Sham, "a great miracle happened there"); and the giving of Chanukah gelt, gifts of money, to children. (Taken from www.chabad.org)

H1N1 Reminder
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.
We continue to be vigilant at School trying to mitigate the spread of H1N1 in our community. We currently have the lowest absence due to flu rate in Scott County. We believe this is due to both healthy habits at school combined with sick students staying home.
We anticipate notification from the Health Department concerning immunization for all students. Parents and guardians will be contacted by email as soon as we receive word.
