Dear Rivermont Community,

With deepest sadness, Rivermont Collegiate mourns the passing of beloved alumna Mary Waterman Gildehaus ('65) on Sunday, November 29, 2009. Mary's vibrant and exuberant spirit brought laughter and joy to all those fortunate enough to know her during her years at St. Kits. Mary, or "Win Win," was known for her infectious enthusiasm and love for Tigers as well as her outgoing membership in School activities.

Mary's love and dedication to the School continued far beyond her years as a student, for she was a long-standing member of Parents' Council, the Board of Trustees, and an ardent supporter of SchooMaryl events and projects for over forty years.

Teachers and students alike knew Mary on a personal level, because of her gift for making every person feel special and important, no matter their age. Often, as Mary walked up the main staircase to attend a Board meeting, she would stop in each classroom to greet teachers with her warm smile and easy laughter.

During her years at the School in the role of parent, Mary was known as the "go-to" person because whenever something was needed, she was there. Whether it be driving the students for a field trip, staying up all night to bake cookies for a party, or cooking a delicious meal for the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon, Mary's generous and caring spirit was there.

Students and faculty remember Mary as our Garden Master. For several days every spring and fall, Mary would arrive on campus in her bib overalls with her tools and garden gloves to tend her beloved plants. Students fondly remember her wheelbarrow as Mary took loads of giggling youngsters around the circle for rides. Recess had to be lengthened on "Mary days" so everyone could have a turn.

As student, parent, trustee, friend - Mary taught us that one person truly does make a difference.

H1N1 Reminder
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.

We continue to be vigilant at School trying to mitigate the spread of H1N1 in our community.  We currently have the lowest absence due to flu rate in Scott County.  We believe this is due to both healthy habits at school combined with sick students staying home.

We anticipate notification from the Health Department concerning immunization for all students.  Parents and guardians will be contacted by email as soon as we receive word.

Hats provide gifts for seniors
hat day

LS Student Council would like to thank the Rivermont community for your support in our fundraiser this week.  Many students cleaned out their piggy banks, donated extra change in their pockets, or gave up allowances to give donations for Wear a Hat to School Day on Wednesday, December 2nd.  Because of your generosity, we provided gifts and food gift certificates for four special senior citizens in the Quad Cities.  The LS StuCo shopped for these seniors on Friday, December 4th.  We tip our hats to you in gratitude!

More Cultural Learning Experiences in the Third Grade
patty
The 3rd grade class continues to have exciting cultural experiences.  Recently the families of Patty Hall, Aditya Shah, and Aisling McDowell came adityato talk to the class.  Patty has a varied background from several countries.  Her Grandmother told us about her German, Russian, Irish, and African heritage. She brought bowls of grapes and cheese because her ancestors had a dairy that used to be where the city of Davenport is now.  Aditya's mother wore a costume from India.  She brought chocolate ladoo, cookies, and grapes for the students to enjoy.  She talked about living in Iaislingndia.  Aditya taught the other students how do to the Diwali dance.  Aisling's father brought in a huge sword, an Irish drum, and a St. Brigit's Cross to show to the class, and some delicious soda bread and apple cider for the students to enjoy.  The class also listened to Irish music and looked at pictures of places in Ireland.  The 3rd grade students are looking forward to having other families come in and share more cultural experiences.
