Next issue December 4!
Have a great break!
Dear Rivermont Community,

Thanksgiving is often an underappreciated holiday.  In rural, agricultural areas it carries a particular significance because the communities rely directly on the land and understand the joys and sorrows of the harvest.  Urban dwellers pick up provisions from the local mega grocery store and complain that the shelves are not re-stocked.  But if you think about it, Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that expects little from us.  There are no gifts to purchase, no cards to mail and no parties to attend.  Families and friends gather together to share, reconnect, and of course, give thanks.

The Rivermont community has much to be thankful for.  We have teachers who commit themselves each day to supporting and challenging their students, often in very individualized ways that not only nurture the minds of their students but also their character.  They keep in touch with parents keeping them informed of progress and opportunities.  Parents, who are always willing to help either with time, talent and yes treasure, can be seen in so many areas of school life supporting and helping teachers and students.  Rivermont is fortunate to have dedicated parents who recognize that their involvement and investment in their child's school benefits all of us.  Behind the scenes, the trustees are found strategizing, investing, and encouraging.  We are also fortunate to have many friends who are committed to our success: alumni and former students who have received their foundation in the classrooms and playing fields of Rivermont Collegiate and of course the community and civic leaders who appreciate the impact Rivermont has on the general community.

Most importantly, Rivermont is fortunate to have wonderful students.  Students who value each other and the education they receive and who challenge themselves in all areas of school life.  Students who make us proud not only with their many accomplishments but also with the kindness of their spirit and generosity of their hearts.

It is uniquely Rivermont that there are no spectators in our community, only participants.  For this, in this season of giving thanks, I am truly thankful.  This spirit of participation enriches Rivermont and is the driving force that makes this School a place where something good is bound to happen!

And so, on this holiday that asks nothing more of us than to recognize how fortunate we are, I wish you good food, good friends and a wonderful start to the holiday season.  Have a wonderful holiday!

M-PACT makes an impact
Did you know a human voice could do that?

Rivermont students and faculty were treated to a great performance by M-PACT on Thursday.  From the groups' website:

The smooth soul of Stevie Wonder, the percussive power of Stomp, the funk and drive of Earth, Wind, & Fire, the hip licks of Take 6, and the brass bite of the Harry Connick Jr. Big Band...all created by the human voice alone!

Hailed "one of the best pop-jazz vocal groups in the world" by the San Francisco Chronicle, m-pact is respected worldwide as a cutting edge trailblazer in the realm of vocal music. Emerging from an age of auto-tune and overproduction, this Los Angeles-based sextet has cultivated a new generation of ears hungry for the fresh, raw power of nature's "first instrument" - the human voice.

From the beginning, the "pact" of these well-studied masters has been to stay true to Music, regardless of style or genre. Their sophisticated sound and accessible appeal have garnered vast accolades, from Vocal Group of the Year from the LA Music Awards, an Indie nomination (the Independent GrammyTM), and Artist of the Year (Seattle Music Awards), to Grand National Champs of the Harmony Sweepstakes competition.

Special thanks to the Parents' Council for sponsoring this assembly.  We are fortunate to have such fine musicians perform for our students.

If you want to hear more we have a special price on their CD "It's All About Harmony." $12.  Simply send cash or check (made to Rivermont) to your child's classroom teacher or advisor and an order will be placed.  CDs will be given to students as soon as they arrive.  Orders may also be left with Tammi or Brittany at the Front Desks.

Shoes That Fit
If the shoe fits, donate it

The Rivermont community has been energetically helping Quad City kids who can't afford shoes that fit.  Imagine having to come to school every day wearing shoes that are too small.  Walking hurts.  Running hurts.  When your feet hurt it is hard to think of much else, especially school work.
sneakers
Students, faculty, and parents have been picking a shoe card and either going out and buying a pair or donating $15 so a pair can be purchased.  Rivermont committed to 50 pairs and they were gone in a day and a half.  We have committed to another 30 pairs and those are also almost gone.

It is truly heart warming to see the out-pouring of generosity!  Rivermont is about participation after all!  The purchased shoes are on display in Central Hall.  Stop by and see an impressive collection.  Cash donations are being accepted since the Shoes That Fit program still has unmet needs.

Thanks to everyone who has helped children in the Quad Cities wear SHOES THAT FIT!

H1N1 Reminder
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.

We continue to be vigilant at School trying to mitigate the spread of H1N1 in our community.  We currently have the lowest absence due to flu rate in Scott County.  We believe this is due to both healthy habits at school combined with sick students staying home.

We are still waiting for word from the Health department concerning immunization.  Parents and guardians will be contacted as soon as we receive word.

John Deere IS Explorers
Interested in pursuing a career in computer technology?

IS Explorers is a co-ed program for young adults, offering high school students in the Quad Cities a real world, business view of computers and technology.  The program consists of bi-weekly meetings presented by computer professionals who work in the Information Systems division of John Deere.  Students are given presentations, take part in hands-on labs and have educational, computer-oriented competitions.

John Deere IS Explorers is one of about fifty Exploring Posts in the Quad City area, offering local students a view of fields such as law enforcement, law and government, aviation, medical and health careers, computers, and more.  Past Explorers have used the program as an opportunity to gain experience towards a particular discipline.  This not onlyJD logo helps to determine if a particular career is what a student wants to pursue, but it also offers a head start on others pursuing the same career after high school.
